While their utility in their originally-intended role (fighter) would be short-lived if not questionable altogether in face of purposely-designed high speed all-jet aircraft, I was reminded of something else......

In WWII, particularly after Japan started its string of defeats in the Pacific, Japanese D4Y Suisei dive bombers began to be outfitted with rocket booster bottles to help with two types of things- first, takeoffs with heavy loadouts, and second, terminal dives on targets (a.k.a. Shimpu a.k.a. Kamikaze).

Now neither of the two would be all that meaningful to the Americans, but if, say, the Fireball and Dark Shark are to be employed as fighterbombers (with more emphasis placed on the second part of the term), would having a jet booster help in attack missions of conventional nature?

My guess is that in the real world, it would have been helpful to have the extra thrust when taking off with a heavy air to ground loadout. But the trade off would be the extra weight of the jet engine and it's fuel. As a pure fighter, there is no way that a prop (recip or turboprop) along with jet engine could compete with a pure jet powered fighter. As an attack aircraft, a simple turboprop would probably be better choice without the extra jet engine. Also, if take off performance is the only advantage of the extra jet engine, then RATO packs would be a better choice. However in the WHIFF world, they looked cool and certainly are worth considering.

Fantastico quality build.  Says its "1950" all over it.  Love that 50s look in cars, planes, ships, tanks.
How did the finish get to be so shiney and reflective ?

Nice. Very inspirational. I have two of these buried in the stash.

What are the rockets?  Are they Tiny Tim's?

Just stumbled on this: http://www.chinalakealumni.org/1944/1944mo.htm

Do aircraft like the MiG-13/I-250N fit into this thread?

The only reason why I did not mention it in the subject title is that I ran out of space there.  ;D

Several coats of Future.

Yes. Bashed from some very awful 1/32 Sidewinders.

Speaking about hybrid propulsion in cargo/liner aircraft: Would it be possible to balance both jet and propeller in order to be very efficient and versatile, at the same time? Would this config be good foe high and hot airports?

In this 707 project, turbo prop and turbo jet could use the same fuel

Notable RW bombers are B-36 and A-2 Savage.
B-36 can easily take upgrade to B-52H TF33 jet pods.
Like to build A-2 with Hawkeye 2000 engines and J85 or F404 jet.

Done two kitbashes that feature mixed prop & jet propulsion.

take it a step further, turboprop and turbojet, or turbofan, use the same core to simplify logistic support.  For that 707 project, T57 turboprops, J57/JT3C turbojets, and a TF33/JT3D in the tail.

Thanks Jon.  For some reason the normal resize function didn't work.  All good now though.

Do-335 ideal candidate for jet in back.

Found a good reference in Tony Butler's new book on early US jet fighters, it was a twin-Mamba installation in the nose with a J33 in the back (alternate jet engines could be used for export variants).

Idea for a heavy mixed-propulsion fighter/attack aircraft:  a T57 in the nose and a J57 in the tail for when extra power was needed.  You'd have a commonality of gas generators to improve your logistics footprint and, if it was a subsonic attack aircraft, you wouldn't need an afterburner on the J57, rather reducing it's length and improving range for the same fuel tankage.

This engine combo has its place entering service in late 40s and 50s. Four operational ones come to mind A2, P2V, B-36, KC97L.
I kitbashed the two types below.  Fun in their own way.  Possible GB topic.

Just a question. In the case that jet engine is just a booster, in cruise flight, is/are the jet/s powered on in slow motion or powered off?
In last case, would it be convinient to fair over intake to avoid drag?
