Welcome to my build of the USS Forrest Sherman which will be done as the Nathan James, the fictional DDG 151 from the TV show The Last Ship, series 3 of which starts tonight on Sky 1.
Trumpeter kit and a lot of parts compared to the Fletcher in the same scale. Includes PE rails too....
The superstructure has some very complex shapes but fit is excellent and the pictures below reflect just 2 evenings at the bench. Haven't decide to go full hull or waterline version but am toying with the idea of doing it in a water base. I must be mad 😊

Looking good! If memory serves correctly, the tv series is taken from a novel of the same name. I wonder how close series and novel match?
-
From what I have read they are not very similar really. The book I believe was based in the '80s and it was after a nuclear exchange. More like On The Beach it sounds like.
-
Nice one.
Trumpeter appear to do a nice ship. I have recently done the HMS Roberts and more than happy with the outcome of that
Seen a bit of it and the concept is ok.
-
Im up to date on the show and really enjoy it. Great to have it back now.
There are a lot of complex shapes in the superstructure but the fit if parts is excellent. Very few gaps requiring filling.
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/A4455672-E266-457C-B3C6-F15AAE72EB2E_zpsmylroquk.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/A4455672-E266-457C-B3C6-F15AAE72EB2E_zpsmylroquk.jpg.html)
So I decided to attach the main superstructure parts before painting in order to get a good solid bond and as there is some cleanup/filling needed at the joins in the sides.

And these little chaps arrived yesterday. Beautifully cast but so tiny they are going to be fun 😃

Plus these sets originally ordered to complete my USS Independence LCS which I will get around to one day. It's only been sitting in the shelf for 3 years

-
Nice, I'm thinking of ordering precisely those sets for my RAN Type 23, plus their Phalanx set and/or their RAM set. Could you please let us know what you think of them?
-
Just looking at the bits in the boxes they look fantastic. No putting together required for the chaff or sensors but the SH60 and 25mm have absolutely tiny parts. Very nice but tiny! Will let you know how I get on putting them together in a few days or weeks.
-
I couldn't wait 😄
Decided to put one of the VM SH60s together. The kit does come with two of the Trumpeter clear plastic helicopters but I'd borrowed them for another project. Some very small parts including torpedo and MAD(Magnetic Anomaly Detector). 4 PE parts for the main rotor but the smallest bit was for the winch above the side door. But with all that and my poor eyesight it still went together very well. A bit too much glue in places but that was my fault.

-
Very nice!
-
This is a fun build to follow. That SH-60 looks better than the Trumpeter version - at least it isn't molded in that brittle clear plastic.
-
Except for the deep recess Windows. Will paint them black then fill with white PVA which should dry clear.
Just noticed the Forrest Sherman has no rear CIWS platform. No front one either. But Nathan James has the rear CIWS so I'm going to have to scratch build the platform. The guns at least are in the kit. There are also different side panels for the rear smoke stack superstructure so they will give me the correct sides at least.
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/1540EF81-969F-4B54-BA6F-9C75887B59F2_zpscjhpzbec.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/1540EF81-969F-4B54-BA6F-9C75887B59F2_zpscjhpzbec.jpg.html)

I have the following reference book:
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/0C7101CD-0D29-40DB-9E0A-6382FBA9BCEA_zpsyzw1vnjr.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/0C7101CD-0D29-40DB-9E0A-6382FBA9BCEA_zpsyzw1vnjr.jpg.html)
But as I'm building a fictional ship, where two real ships were used for the filming, the main reference is the show itself. And the Nathan James has the rear CWIS and the flat stack tops.
Quite pleased with how my scratch built platform came out:
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/46829ECD-1380-4B66-8771-50F4676B72AD_zpsfa6qejfo.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/46829ECD-1380-4B66-8771-50F4676B72AD_zpsfa6qejfo.jpg.html)
And also started painting the decks
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/66DF7CA3-BE6B-4F2C-BA3F-C54752F4D003_zps1by5achi.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/66DF7CA3-BE6B-4F2C-BA3F-C54752F4D003_zps1by5achi.jpg.html)
And that's it for evening 6! Unbelievable progress for me. But it will slow down once I get on to all the detail bits
-
zooming ahead.
Great work on the Helo's
-
Finally got my airbrush so practicing on a few other bits before tackling the superstructure painting. Also got Mr Hobby Grey FS 36270 which looks close enough to the right colour for me. And thanks to a colleague in IPMS Ireland who printed the crest on decal paper for me
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/9B9544F2-6BD7-4A2F-8522-E130C270538B_zpsmqkj2qjx.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/9B9544F2-6BD7-4A2F-8522-E130C270538B_zpsmqkj2qjx.jpg.html)
So we'll be underway again shortly
-
This is nudging me closer to starting my own modified class ship. ;) :)
-
Go for it Wombat. What are you planning?
This was fun:

It's still a thought-game in progress but the following ideas are where I'm at right now.
Lose the hangars & helo's.
Maybe lose one of the VLS locations.
Remaining VLS to be a dedicated anti-shipping system.
Gain a Y (?) turret.
Gain long-range SAM launchers in B & X locations (locations to be scratched).
More medium-, & short-range AA weapons.
More light weapons (25mm Bushmasters)
Better/more shipborne ASW weapons systems.
I'm still working on the scenario for the mod's being applied to a sub-class of Australian-modified Arleigh Bourke's, which involves ongoing confrontations with an ever more aggressive Indonesia continuing on from the 1950's/60's Konfrontasi, in a similar manner.
-
Sounds awesome. Veteran Models bits will come in useful.
-
Yep! My stockpile is growing! ;)
-
Can't wait to see how your painting turns out, I screwed my last ship wiff come paint time.
-
Having only just got my first airbrush last week I want to practice on a few other things first before tackling this beast so it might be a week or two before I make any more progress.
-
I probably should have started with the red bottom, then grey and then the boot line but too late now. Took a top down approach.

I really do like that Mr Hobby paint for spraying. It was so easy!
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/6BCA6984-BF76-4798-B7E4-9FBDDCEFDE6A_zpsc1c76cnr.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/6BCA6984-BF76-4798-B7E4-9FBDDCEFDE6A_zpsc1c76cnr.jpg.html)
-
Looking good! :)
-
That reversal in painting order could become what our good friend Bob Ross used to call a "happy accident".
It sure looks like it's coming along superbly!
Brian da Basher
-
Another step forward....
First coat of the Hull Red by Vallejo. Went down nicely. However it would appear I got a bit carried away with the airbrush so some over-spray to be cleaned up.
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/147C6F17-21BC-438C-9E65-ED100C53625C_zps4gaduqmk.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/147C6F17-21BC-438C-9E65-ED100C53625C_zps4gaduqmk.jpg.html)
-
So the bulk painting job is done. Only my 2nd build with the airbrush and the first involving multiple colours and lots of masking. Some flaws to be cleaned up but not too bad I think. Vallejo US Grey for the decks and Mr Hobby Grey for the vertical surfaces. Also Vallejo for the hull red and boot line and their Light Grey on the VLSs.
Will tutu up the mistakes with hairy stick and then start adding all the little detail bits.

Moving along nicely
+1 & I'm watching intently, to see how it comes together. ;) :)

Sorry for the slow progress folks...
Still working on the tiny bits. Bad eyesight, thick fingers and not the steadiest hands don't help.
First the CIWS. On the left the kit supplied weapons system and the one from Veteran Models on the right
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/B4C938AD-B86B-4CFA-8C48-DC66A7AF0D24_zpstlyvpxjj.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/B4C938AD-B86B-4CFA-8C48-DC66A7AF0D24_zpstlyvpxjj.jpg.html)
And the 25mm chain guns left to right Trumpeter, Orange Hobby and Veteran Models
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/A3B307DA-85CE-402A-8C7F-6C247E40FBD1_zpsjcfw6pta.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/A3B307DA-85CE-402A-8C7F-6C247E40FBD1_zpsjcfw6pta.jpg.html)
The Veteran one only comes with two guns and one barrel has been taken by the dreaded Carpet Monster. The Orange has 4 in the set but best of all the PE barrel is already embedded in the resin gun body. Really outstanding! Both Veteran & Orange come with PE stands around the weapon station
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/5C9C1E26-1ACD-420C-83AF-C38E0A227867_zps0anwymql.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/USS%20Nathan%20James/5C9C1E26-1ACD-420C-83AF-C38E0A227867_zps0anwymql.jpg.html)
-
Veteran one looks to be the most accurate but, for a great compromise between accuracy & ease-of-construction, the Orange Hobby one looks to be a clear winner. 8) :)
-
I would agree. The PE arm braces on the back of the Veteran one are just silly: the number of bends expected in something that only measures about 1mm x 2mm :o
-
Still slowly progressing. There are so many teeny little bits....

But that's the last bit before the railings so no more excuses. They are painted and putting them on will keep me busy for the weekend.

Everything looks right on - sweet. :)
Contrast of gray with darker upper surfaces adds a bunch of character.
Rigging lines add even more !
-
Thanks Finsrin. To the best of my knowledge I've got those two colours on the vertical & horizontal correct. A lot of the other shades though on antenaes etc are more by eye-ball. Turning into a 50 shades of grey build :)

Finally started the railings. Using tiny dabs of superglue. Bit of cleanup required but pretty pleased with the result so far.

But these were straight lengths. Rest will need bends.....

This is looking really good! Railings are a pain, always... especially if you accidentally touch a railing and an end pops off. I've used Gator Glue (http://www.gatorsmask.com/gatorglueorder1.html (http://www.gatorsmask.com/gatorglueorder1.html)) and it works well (I've also used it on tracks). It's basically a PVA glue similar to carpenter's glue and it provides a strong but slightly flexible join, so PE (especially railings) are a bit more forgiving.
-
Might look that up in the LHS Frank, thanks.
-
Looking very impressive.
-
Working well... really nice work
-
Thanks Gents
Still working away on the railings a bit at a time. Lots of cleanup to be done and touch-ups on the paint. But I'm getting there.

I really should focus on one project at a time. Currently too many on the bench. This, a Puma AFV, a figures vignette with some DevGru operators and a secret little project for our next club Newsletter.

Railings cleaned up, life raft pods attached and started on the flight deck safety nets. Two more evenings should see the end of it.

Just need to finish and tidy up the rear nets, add the 25mm chain guns and a very light few streaks down the side. Add the helicopter also. And front and rear flag-staffs

All done at last.

Looks great! The PE railing and nets look good.
-
Beautiful model!!
-
Sweet. Lots of attention to detail. Boats, railing, rigging, paint, etc,,, and dirty water stains on hull sides. :)
Find myself slowly looking stem-to-stern taking in design of ship and details you tended to.

Thank you Gentlemen, your comments and praise are much appreciated. It was on our club table last weekend at Scale Model World and I was delighted with the attention that she received
-
Brilliant job, it really, really, makes me want to get off my backside and finish some of my projects.
