Saucer Jet
« on: October 14, 2017, 03:41:07 PM »
Introducing the "Saucer Jet" per Frank3K request to start posting.
Based on Atlantis kit "Vic Torry and his Flying Saucer" which measures to 30ft 9in as 1/72.  Went thru stash selecting likely donor kits.  Nothing glued yet cuz sizing and cutting-filing parts to see what works.  Expect to be one or two seat 1950s roots attack jet.  Not a dogfighter.  Decided on 1/72 Revell Horten Go 229 wings.  Working on nose and jet intakes right now.  Only progress picture is wings taped on to show general configuration.  More later.
Attached two pictures.

Can't you use the existing forward windows? Maybe enlarge the slots? The forward slope will be a bitch to match with a canopy. Maybe a hemisphere? The intersection of the two curves would give it a somewhat elliptical cross section.

Have to be 1/200 or smaller to sit inside and use windows.  Am figuring out a couple possible canopies.
Some underside strakes have to go.
Leave on week trip Tuesday.  Be back to it after that.  Always open to comments and ideas.  Thanks.

Removed center three of five under body strakes.  Hope to fill in before trip.  Outer two will hold landing gear.
Front gear and guns will be in nose piece from 1/55 P-38.
Attached picture shows under body with strakes cut off and 1/72 F4F for size comparison.

Some progress.  Took three steps forward then one step back.  Puttied in where bottom strakes were and OOB holes on top.
Cut open end of wing to fit on saucer.  Helps a lot but must cut into saucer (fuselage?) to get flush fit.  Cutting-sanding-fitting x2 are ahead for wing fit.
After much work on 1/55 P-38 nose to fit over & under on front and got it to fit well.  When attached with wings in position it suddenly looked like a form of large fin turtle.  Need to downsize P-38 nose or find a plan "B".

Thanks, will let look sink in for awhile.  Tail fins, intakes, paint change look.  Tempted to finish similar to Scran51's RAN A-7D
Working on wing to saucer matching now.
Is joy to build again.  Have two over half finished gun boats and bomber should get back to.

Appreciate interest.  Update......
After attaching wing to saucer issue, got it figured out.  Always learning.
1/72 F7U-3 tails seem best.  One at end of each top strake.
Digging thru landing gear bin to find what works.  Brian: Decided not to use spats.
Nothing glued at this point.

Gamera picture brings back memories of those epic movies !
As I recall, Gamera destroyed a flight of Russian Victor bombers.

Split between 1/1 car modifying and kit-bashing.  Made progress on both.
Enjoy it when others do this, so attached in work pictures.
After three failed attempts at jet intakes.  Drop tanks worked and rather simple on the fourth try.
For pictures parts are placed on saucer not final alignment glued.  As comparison included a drop tank before cut to be intake.  One of two candidate canopies is shown.  Behind canopy is top part of T-38 fuselage to taper back on saucer.  Last part of taper is rear of long tail drop tank.  Forward part of its pointy tail end matches to T-38 piece for last taper bit.
Without a cockpit for canopy to cover will do Brian's painted canopy treatment.  Fitting of Cutlass tails is next.

Not to derail Bill's thread, but a "Voyage to the bottom of the Sea" flying sub can donate the wings for the P-38 variant; there's a 1/128 kit that may be big enough for a 1.72 build.

There's also the 1/48 Martian ship from "War of the Worlds", but that would require difficult surgery through very slick plastic.

Tophe - what software do you use to make your isometric drawings? All three look good.

I use Corel Draw Home X7 vectorial drawing software, and I created trigonometric calculations to build a slanting view from a 3-view drawing.
Anyway, drawing is easy but building this saucer "for real" (in plastic, not metal though) is the true challenge... ;)

Wing spar from sprue for wing support.  First pass at nose & intake putty is done.
Look is taking shape.  Canopy needs solid treatment.
Next:  wings > tails > exhaust > landing gear.

IF you're still unhappy with the look (too turtle-ish) you could add horizontal chines at the hull centreline that fair into the sides of the P-38 pod and then blend them in with Aves. That would extend the saucer shape and reduce the "neck" of the turtle look. Something starting about the inside or outside edges of the inlets and then fairing in a curve to the sides of the pod.

Just a thought.

Like where this is going.

Used three types putty.  Finding Vallejo 70.401 working best as final thinner coat.  At certain point will stop filling & sanding, call it good enough.  I build for the concept more than perfect finish.
Perceptive suggestion tankmodeler. :smiley:   Probably leave as is so can finish and move on to next build.

Does it say anything about me that I would have put the front fins a bit further around towards the front & made them about 3/4 the size, then put a second set of fins further back, about 1/2 the size of the front fins & angled down at about 15o? ???

Southern Eagle Ray;

White Spotted Eagle Ray;

Ornate Eagle Ray;

Something simpler (still an Eagle Ray);

Spotted Eagle Ray underside (most Eagle Rays are mostly white underneath);

Still in work.  Being a sorta experiment in configuration tried experimental stencil approach to painting.  Had not built in two years and got "mixed" results.  Of all my builds, this was best test subject for this upper and lower camo experiment.

Underside stencil was rubber liner typically used on tool box drawers.  Checkerboard pattern of pads and open squares.  While strange, it does mess with eyes trying to see whatz what.  Is difficult to secure flat for spray painting.

Upper side was cut from roll of leather material meant as center rollout on long table to place dishes buffet style like for a wedding etc.  Had various scrolly cut out of it.  Selected a pattern and its mirror pattern that fit on relatively small Saucer Jet.  Mistake was to directly spray paint instead of trace shapes with pen/pencil then brush paint.  Some places paint stuck to leather edge and got messy as stencil was removed.  Cleaned up worst of bad edges.  Might paint over edges with a brush using medium to light brown.  Not sure.

Yet another learning experience.  Have removable landing gear in work.  Can install for when on ground or remove for in flight look.  Did try BdB inside canopy painting technique and it worked.

I failed to read the rtf file, sorry :(
EDIT: I got an error message, that is why I thought it was not working but when I closed everything, the last window was a Word one with it, thank you! :smiley:

Great build around a cool looking design!

I will borrow the idea for a future look-a-like project, if you allow me.

Loved the bottom pattern. Now all I have to do is find out what is a "rubber liner typically used on tool box drawers" :) :) :)

Feel honored by all you fine model builders-bashers comments. :icon_alabanza:
After a hiatus was fun to jump into building again.  Can build one as most any scale.
Yes, does have a British vibe.
Please do "borrow the idea for a future look-a-like project".  Like to see variation(s) on this.

One of your best yet, fins!

Excellent choice on the paint scheme and those gun barrels look every bit the business!

Well done!!!

I love the camo - the underside is very creative! What a cool machine!

Thanks much.  Saucer inspired me to do "something".  No overall plan.  Pieced together as went along.
Far as British look goes, Buccaneer or Hawker Hunter wings seem good.   Must be others.
Brian - Gun barrels are metal 1/72 25mm Bushmaster.
KiwiZac - Was best subject yet to try that type underside camo on.  Is attack teammate to work with Slowy jet.
Few touch ups, then on to next build.

Do appreciate all your comments and support throughout the build. :smiley:
Suggestion:  Someone build stealth Saucer Jet C.  F-22, F-35, F-117, others possible donors.
Plan to do prop bomber next.

Thank you much kind sir and others.
Nice to have finished a bit better but is certainly different.  All parts not meant to fit together.  So much cutting and sanding and puttying.
Attached landing gear after posted pictures.  Too tall and flimsy.  Redoing landing gear.
Like to go with "normal" wing marking decals and remove top of fuselage one.  That next.

After landing gear and decal redo will take pictures and post.
Do picture parked with F-86, F-100, or similar ?

Wow you just keep topping yourself with each update, fins!

Love the camo and you've blended the parts so seamlessly one has trouble picking out that this was made up from different kits!

Pure eye candy all the way and the shark's mouth is the cherry on top!

Most excellent!

Stunning, lovely build.
If I don't plan it, it can't go wrong!

If it's great, I did it. If it's naff, I found it.
