Why fly Martin Mariners when you can fly Consolidated Carolinas:

But what about sticking those gull wings and two piece tails on a conventional bomber fuselage like a Martin Marauder. The extra wing clearance could be used for a WWII gunship. Don't know where you'd stick the main gear but. Maybe B-52 style bicycle gear.

As tested on the XB-26H 'Middle River Stump Jumper'.

IIRC, that was to test the u/c gear for the XB-51 ---

B-51: now there's a plane that should have been built. The Canberra was designed for hi-hi-hi but the B-51 for lo-lo-lo and the two would have complemented each other perfectly and then the B-51 would have been great for low level strikes on North Vietnam.

Stump Jumper test tesults were used in design of the XB-48, and the info was also used by Boeing
for the XB-47.

One gets saved in active inventory for whatever reason and gets used as a test bed for launching Harpoon Missiles.

Does anyone else do a 1/72 scale Mariner kit? I have a Rareplanes one still in its bag and I've often thought of starting it, but it's pretty complex for a vacform.

Note that kit is of the R-2800 powered PBM-5A amphibian, which was post-WWII and only built/used in
small numbers. The kit includes gear-well blanking plates so with a little work it can be built as a
PBM-5 flying boat, however, no beaching gear in the kit. Building the most common WWII type,
PBM-3, requires different engines, and the earlier dash numbers require smaller nacelles. Evidently
the biggest shape error is a too shallow rear fuselage, which, according to a couple of commentators, Rareplanes got right.

US list of $69.95 is steep, but it less than the price of the Mach 2 kit, and unlike the Mach 2 kit
the Minicraft kit is a typical modern, mainstream injection moulded kit. So at the end of the day
I guess it's a matter of how much your time is worth.

Well I can't draw profiles for shit but it's a really neat looking shape.
I reackon i'd make a pretty neat looking conventional bomber.

Lose the wing floats and replace the lower float hull with something boxy - Liberator probably including the ball turret.
Add two more engines ........

Adding in Martin's other similar flying boat, which was designed as a successor to the PBM Mariner with more powerful engines, an improved hull, and a single vertical fin tail, the Martin P5M Marlin:

Potential updates to P5M:

  • Give it 2 × Westinghouse J34-WE-34 turbojet engines in underwing pods akin to those used on the P2H Neptune from the same era
  • Provide a turbo-prop update - say twin T56s

Another pair of Marlin ideas:

  • RAAF P5M alongside P-2H Neptunes thus staying in the flying boat game
  • RNZAF P5M as a replacement for their Short Sunderlands

The RCAF also flew them.   ;)

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

I would but alas I don't have either a 1/48 Marlin or Neptune.  I do have a 1/48 Mariner but that's got other plans...
