Trumpeter 1/350 HMS Roberts
« on: May 22, 2016, 06:22:45 PM »
So not a whiffer, but definitely a real world ship type that has always interested me
The Trumpeter 1/350 HMS Roberts Monitor.
To my eye it is a great kit. Logical breakdown of sub assemblies plus This kit has almost every bit of etch you need, railing, gun details, ladders the lot. Also includes some nice chain but not quite small enough I reckon.

The real deal in action

So a brief in progress, sorry I did not do this as I went but I was not sure how well it would come out.
I used aftermarket Main guns and 4" guns, Bofors Barrels and 20mm Oerlikon by Master-Model
2Pdr Pom Pom barrels by Aber.
All great products , the finesse of the barrels lifted the model a lot

So as we know, sometimes out of the box will just not do

so first up the teensy weenzy replacements for 20mm Oerilikon guns

Then because I wanted at least some rigging, the plastic yards had to replaced by brass and the upper radar arrays by soldered brass rod, as the kit etch iof those parts, is flat and totally not right.. well for me anyway

then giving due homage the the pic above.. the gimmick.. try and recreate the gun blast. To get the - and + I soldered one leg of the LED array to some brass and a lead to the other end and fed a insulated feeder wire up to isolate the metal to give a nice circuit

then the bofors got the biz.. the barrels were after market, the rest is kit etch, which is really nice.

Kaboom... the kit at 80% done.

And finally here it is.. all the railing, less the Bofors on the turret and a bit of final touch up painting. For the sharp eyed there is also some 1/350 Eduard prepainted crew as well

Amazing job. I personally am not a modeler who could handle " teensy weenzy" pieces but you have done so with style and finesse. Hope to see more of your awesome work.

Work in progress ::

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

Impressive work so far and when finished will portray a very nice "in action" moment.

Impressive muzzle blast! The rest of the ship looks great, too. I like the blast effects in the ocean.
