OK, fixed! :)

Never came across any writing about this. Anyone seen a book or articles about M8 in combat?
Was it great for its intended use? Mediocre? Poor?
Appreciate info on that.

Hunnicutt's Armored Car book covers it. I don't have it in front of me, but as I recall, it did pretty well. Of course the 37mm cannon was nothing much by the end of the war.
-
The M60 turret on the Centurion hull looks great. :) Would be pretty cool to see how the Israelis upgraded this.

Thanks!

Talos --- Thank You.
Would not be slaying Panzers, Panthers, Tigers. Though wonder how well it was used to best of M8's abilities (or not).

As I recall, it was used extensively for scouting and other recon work, which it was very good at. Very mobile. It was used as a command car by commanders too, as was the turret-less M20 Utility Car.

Those two are looking to be up gunned well.
Of course are not M8/20 :-* :-* but I like anyway :)
-
Did you say up gunned?
What about this?
BTW: turret must be a narrowed version.
-
(http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j340/ysi_maniac/drawTanks/amx-panther.jpg)
Having into account the movility problems AMX-30 had in the beginning, this is IMO perfectly plausible.
BTW, AMX-30's turret is that big. :D

The FlaK eight-wheeler is also pretty cool.

Oh yea, I had Centauro in my mind when conceived this project

Hey, I have just that planned.

Hey, I have just that planned.
It might be a bit tight on a regular width hull but perhaps better to combine a pair of hulls side by side to get enough room inside to fit the turret?

That really looks cool. Maybe do one with a Leo 1 turret...or a Leo 1 with a Panther turret?

I am still considering my options...
-
[Maybe do one with a Leo 1 turret...or a Leo 1 with a Panther turret?
I am currently (stopped for some years, in fact) working in such as it was considered by spanish army in '80s. It was called LeoX
-
Extremely wheeled. Hanomag base will allow more room for turret
(http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j340/ysi_maniac/drawTanks/sdkfz234-paturret-10rad.jpg)
Note: this case is better scaled. In the last 8-rad, turret was a bit downsized.

I love the short PT-76s. From the side they look like BMDs.
-
very nice profiles ! ..... but I don't think they're short enough -- how about just 4 roadwheels per side like the chinese things ? ... or even only 3 ... 2 ... 1 ??? :D
Some nifty conversions of the Chinese type were done by the Tamils in Sri Lanka ;)
-
"706" could almost be in ARA colours... :icon_nif:
-
If you drop down to one road wheel per side you could change the crews uniforms to include technicolour fuzzy wigs, bulbous red noses and white face paint

M60 and Merkava (same scale)

ISTR that a Merkava prototype was initially tested with a turret from the M48......
I wonder if we can still call the result of a M48 turret indeed operationally paired with a Merkava hull a M48......
-
M60 and Merkava (same scale)
In one of the old "Born In Battle" issues there was an image of the Merkava prototype vehicle that had an M48 turret which gave it an unusual appearance so you are not far from the reality of it with your M60 turret on the Merkava hull :)
-
That would be this one:

Hmmm...makes me wonder about the equivalent of a Magach or Sabra in Central Europe in the US Army (say the M1 ran into problems maybe):

Super T-34's hull + Panther turret = the finest tank of WWII (possibly)
The Daimler-Benz entry into the Panther requirement was basically a T-34 copy.
The VK30.02 (DB) powered by a MB507 diesel motor, with external leaf suspension. Combat weight of 34 tonnes and a max speed of 54 kph.

Love the Bradley with the gun turret.

The original design for what became the XM8 light tank had that turret mounted on a Bradley hull (both built by FMC). Have to get out me copy of Hunnicutt and scan it in...

I must admit that 6 wheels Humvee is not my invention as I saw this in the 1st Whatif forum. I do not remember author's name.
BTW: Does any of you know the weight of Bradley's turret?

I actually quite like the M47's turret. Aesthetically, it's one of my favorite Cold War US tanks. That bottom modification is great, though. That's the Panzer Front E-79 turret, isn't it?

Would that turret fit a CVR(T), Warrior, Marder, or LAV?

In some ways, I have weird opinions on the T-62. I think it was underrated, under-appreciated, and totally unnecessary—largely a waste of effort that would have been better spent refining the next generation.
Developmentally, it was basically a dead end. It passed almost nothing on to the next generation of tanks (apart from the interim early T-64s that had the 115mm gun until the 125mm was ready). It was effectively a stretched and upgunned T-54/55. All that having been said, though, the T-54/55 was a good starting point, and the idea of a tank with the armor profile, simplicity, and reliability of the T-55, but a much, much better gun was not a bad pitch, but it was probably too much trouble for too little of an incremental improvement. Clearly most of Warsaw Pact agreed, since they largely chose to just improve their T-55s.
Again, though, if you used or encountered T-62s, it was generally a reliable vehicle with a very good gun. The gun was also accurate with a lot of penetration and state of the art ammunition. Many T-62s in the 1960s and 1970s also had superior infrared night fighting equipment to the Western vehicles they were pitted against.
Aesthetically, the turret's always been a bit too egg-shaped for me and the gun is almost comically long, leading to that unbalanced appearance at the back of the turret with no bustle, so your modified AMX 30 turret addresses both of those issues.
Cheers,
Logan

I agree with you. In a certain way I like T-62 aesthetically, much more than T-54/55. :-*

Well the Sd.Kfz. 1422 Sturmhaubitze 42 Ausf.G (StuH 42) did mount a 105mm gun in real life so it may be possible (provided recoil etc was manageable). That said, it would look a tad bigger I think - see StuH 42 below for comparison:

How about an M18 with an M4 Sherman turret?

Here, in first drawing, I combine the turret of M10 and the hull of M4A3E8, my favourite components in the vast and complicated (at least, for me) field of US armor during WWII. Second is a conversion in a kind of recce or command version, with gun reduced to 50 mm or so.

Great work Carlos!
Your Sherman with the smaller gun is something I have been thinking about for some time. Though, my version would keep the Sherman turret and install a 57mm/6-pdr to create an infantry support tank. Something that could have been assigned to the tank company of the infantry regiment.
Your M18 with the M8 Turret also looks like a great combination of parts. I see no reason why you could not increase the size of the main gun provided there is room for the weapon to recoil in to the confines of the turret.
Sherman turret on the M18 looks just as I had imagined it would. Wonder if there would be sufficient clearance under the turret basket for the thing to fit as a drop-in modification. Ammunition storage might be a bit less but it would be a great little tank with a speed advantage.
-
Another mash up to consider would be the turret from the AMX-13 mated to the hull of the Panzer IV or the Panther, or both.

German Schmalturn on T-34 hull is a good choice IMO.

What if an IFV based on T-34?
BTW: It would be a very confortable vehicle in the rigors of russian winter. 8)

The BTR-70/ZSU-57 looks pretty neat. 8)
The other two? Well, given the exposure to return fire of the gunners, you may as well use a truck but I, too, could still see something like this thrown together in Syria/Lebanon.

I love Strv-74 turret. So I decided to upgunit with the guns of swiss, not swedish, afv (I love the coax 20mm Oerlikon). Then I settled this new turret on different bases; one of them was a Strv-74 itself that I equipped with external fuel tanks à la S-tank.

Would it have been possible with the turret rings?

Would it have been possible with the turret rings?
The T-34-76 wouldn't be too far off. Turret rings were:
Matilda II = 1.37 m/54 inches
T-34-76 = 1.45 m/57.08 inches
T-34-85 = 1.60 m/62.99 inches

Matilda hull with T-34 turret looks really good - I wonder how we could make it work.
-
A quick measure of my unfinished Matilda shows there's enough space on the top plate, but it's knowing where the bulkheads fall inside the hull . . .
Also, a Matilda was fitted with an A27 turret :-

1) Remove Matilda upper deck turret race.
2) Remove T-34/85 upper deck turret race.
3) Splice 2 into space left by 1

@Carlos - IRL at Fort Campbell, KY (ca 1989-1990) there were some obsolete M48 Tank hulls that had M60A2 turrets in a holding area waiting to be taken out to the firing ranges. An interesting combination destined to become range targets.

What if the saga of soviet heavy tanks continued during '60s and '70s?
Here you can see first two members of LB(1) series along with T-10M (RW).

LB-2 is armed with a 130mm gun.

Finn Armour in second winter war.
After the fall of Berlin Wall, finn gov and army decide to conquest back the territories that russians took during wwii.
Suply mint Leopard 2A would be too expensive, so finn authorities urge german gov and army to suply turrets and guns, new or used, for Leopard 2A 3 or 4.
When first victories come, finn army begin to take advance of "russian suply" ;)

European MBT
AMX-40 with Leopard 2A4 hull. A kind of super LeoX or Leox2.
I like the idea of a secundary gun between 20mm and 50mm, in this case, Rheinmetall 20mm. In first option, it is installed coaxially to main gun; in second option, a full unmanned turret is merged with original rotary cupola.

@Carlos - IRL Mexico swapped the 37mm gun out on some of their M8 fleet for a French manufactured 20mm gun.

@Carlos - IRL Mexico swapped the 37mm gun out on some of their M8 fleet for a French manufactured 20mm gun...
Thanks Jeff ... interesting gun.
After Googling around, I see that the M8's gun was supposed to be made in Mexico by the workshops of SEDENA (Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional). As you said, though, its based on a French design - the GIAT Modèle F2 (a navalised 20x139mm GIAT M693 which, in turn, was based on the Swiss 30x170 HS 830 - so basically the same as the US M139 used on the M114 and some LVTP-7s). Phew!
Local terminology is rather garbled. SEDENA offers a course on operating "GIAT Y GI-2" ... making it sound like an 'either/or' deal. Elsewhere, SEDENA refers to this gun as the "Cañón Cal. 20mm, Hispano-Suizo Giant GI-2". If SEDENA does hold a licence, its a little weird that they can't spell either GIAT or Hispano-Suiza properly ???
The Sentinel México Facebook blog acknowledges the French/South African origins confusion. Then goes on to say that Mexican F2s/GI-2s arm the MEX-1 (Chrysler MAC-1) and M8A1 armoured cars; SEDENA-Henschel HWK-11 and DNC-13 (AMX-13 VCI) tracked vehicles; Chevrolet Cheyenne 'technicals'; and some Bell 212 and 412EP helicopters.
