P-40 Soviet Slammer weekend build
« on: September 28, 2014, 08:41:06 PM »
Sometimes you just want something simple, no major kit surgery, no muss, no fuss.

Fortunately, the Accurate Miniatures Air Combat Legends P-40N fills the bill nicely.

This kit is far more basic than I expected. It also looked a bit larger than the usual 1/72 scale P-40. It turns out this is an old "box scale" vintage Monogram kit, possibly 1/60th (?). I have another one of these buried in the kit stash jenga pile. Tack this up as a lesson learned: it pays to research first. Oh well. At least it builds up nice.

No filler was needed and only a touch of white school glue was used to close a small gap under the front of the canopy. I did have to resort to using the old rubber band (we call 'em gumbands here) trick to make sure the wingroot join was solid.

Maybe because of the blue, I kept imagining this bird flying with Soviet Naval Aviation defending Leningrad. I did some research but I couldn't find out if my choice of red stars was accurate, which probably means they're not, but I like the way they look.

The model was brush-painted freehand (no tape was used) in acrylics, mostly some nameless Testor's blue I got on the cheap. Decals were from spares.

I had a lot of fun on this low-stress project which I started Friday afternoon. I hope you enjoyed the pictures.

That looks great! I love the late P-40s they look so aggressive  :icon_twisted:

Nice job on the paint, very steady hand there without the aid of masking  :)

Wot, no spats?

Nice work Brian.  The blue is a definite change from the normal colors associated with the P-40 in Russian markings.

Again you come up with unusual color scheme that works :)
Painted like that, I see it being one plane of the first Soviet flight demonstration team.

The Monogram P-40 is 1/64th box scale. Yours is very bright indeed, well done!!! 8)
