XP-26SW
« on: March 25, 2020, 01:10:43 PM »
Given we in WA State are under edict to stay home;  is perfect time to start another experimental same era airplane to complement XFWB.   This will be Experimental P-26 Swing Wing to test concept of swing wings (of course).   The XP-26SW.   Two core kits are 1/72 P-26 and 1/100 VF-1S.   Boxes photo is attached.   More later.

Here goes....   Assembled & cut swing wing section out of VF-1S.   Wings good size for P-26 though prefer swing assembly was smaller, it will work with up-sized engine.

A variable swept-wing P-26 is some of the best out-of-the-box thinking to fly by in a while!

You've made some outstanding cuts too!

Be careful with that, they could call you up if they need surgeons.

You've got a great start right out of the gate!

Yikes!   :o Imagine that:  You go in for a minor surgery and come out with 3 new appendages, a different colour scheme and are re-scaled... ;D

Wow! That is impressive

The blue parts make me think of leading-edge radiators. Any thoughts of going liquid-cooled for your XP-26SW?

Going radial, just finished repainting it.  From parts bin, could be from A6M not sure.  Also just glued on spats now with bit larger P-40 wheels.

Interesting! A Zeke cowling will really change the look ... although I guess, with swing-wings already in play, that's not really an issue  ;D

Thank you and right this really changes P-26 look.  Now down to last couple parts and decals.  Drafting briefing sheet.  Post next day or two.

After many paint and decal demons to deal with which were somewhat conquered.  Called it finished so can move on to other builds.  Blue is Testors 1110 out of a 15 cent factory marked bottle.  Thinking thatz late 1960s.  The paint had an attitude.  No more using this bottle.  Decals are mix of cooperative ones and some that had to be cut out of sheet and glued on with paper backing.  Still,,, it does portray concept of experimental swing wing P-26.

With hindsight would make an Army type brown to avoid paint issues.   Devised minimally disruptive way to do that.   Remove engine and windscreen and spray brown.   Comments ?

Great idea and color combo! It wouldn’t look out of place on the cover of a 30’s magazine like “Air Wonder Stories”

Very dramatic and a lovely build. I especially liked your idea for that huge roundel under the centre-section

Thank You all  :icon_alabanza:     Another flavor of P-26 to go with other three of recent BTS times.   1/100 VF-1S lingered in stash for long time, can't think any other use.   Appreciate hearing what you see in it.   Next P-26 build is planned.
