Love the John Birmingham Axis of Time Trilogy books.. alternate future whiffer fodder galore.
Previously done a couple of other models based on craft in those books.. time for my favourite Ship
HMS Trident - Trimaran Stealth Destroyer.
So armed with a cheapo 1/700 ship from a swap and sell as the main hull basis.. away we go
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/trident/trident1.jpg)
The ship is described as havinga sleek superstructure so a bit of card bashing. A couple of $8 1/1250 ships had to be sacrificed as well.. because.. I am lazy and I want full hulls as the book describes it having three engines to give it the 100 knot speed it can achieve.
Working on the hangars.. gotta have choppers.
Anybody have a 1/700 Merlin Helo ?
So this may be either a quick build or a shelf queen as it is my first ship major conversion/scratchbuild.
-
very cool. I'll keep an eye on this one.

Seconded!! Would love to do the USS Hilary Clinton with Sea Raptors one day.
Looking forward to this build.

Looking good so far, though I thought HMS Trident had NH-90 helicopters and not Merlins?
I have the other two books, Designated targets & Final impact but not the first one, so I have a question, does Weapons of choice describe HMS Trident (apart from being a trimaran)?
Length,beam,armament,etc?
IF it does could you put the description on here, as I would like to try and do a profile of her
Thanks in advance,
Ken

Ken, probably right on the Helo's.. it was a throwaway line, as the kit I have has Oceanhawks.
As far as an outright technical description, I cannot recall it, but I am doing a quick rescan of the book to find out more about deck layout.
In fact you will probably find that by the time this is finished will probably be somewhat different in structure and layout.
Pretty much I am making this up as I go along using snippets in the book to give some hints every now an again.
There is someones version of the Trident on the Quiet Room wiki
(http://quietroom.wikispaces.com/file/view/RelentlessDestroyer.jpg/344611768/RelentlessDestroyer.jpg)
I am looking to create something like this
(http://defense-update.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/klewang_2.jpg)
with a bit of this

Slight off topic: interestingly, there is a trimaran serving in Australian service right now (and has been since 2007):

Looking great so far! :)
Have a look at THIS ISSUE (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=TGYEAAAAMBAJ&printsec=frontcover#v=twopage&q&f=false) of Popular Mechanics on Google Books. From page 72 onward there's an article on trimaran warships.

I hope you are smarter in your material selection and fire fighting provisions that the builders/designers of KRI Klewang were

They are excellent books Buzz, I've only read the first two and it had my thoughts racing in the Whiff direction. Great subject you've chosen, the Trident will be something else to see!! 8)
Maybe the Japanese stealth destroyer needs some research ................ ?
The Australian Customs Service contracted the RV Triton in 2007 from her owners Gardline, now named ACV Triton. Here's the Wiki entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RV_Triton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RV_Triton)

Ok.. I admit I have been slack :)
So a small update.
I have added some ApoxySculpt to the Fo'ard areas for streamlining and what not plus some form to the hull shape.
Hopefully get some more done this coming weekend
Cheers Brian T

Looking good!
-
Hmmm, nice progress. 8)
-
Filled in & faired in nicely. :) As first ship major conversion/scratchbuild, may be looking better than is permitted.
You know how it is with government Standards Of Building (SOB) regulations.
Looked up ApoxySculpt and Apoxie Sculpt. Like to try some.
Thanks for posting picture.

Way Kool ... !!! Not only is it a great looking ship but you could add some space engines and have a starship, too !!!

I like the cut of your jib sir.
Buzz, that's some outstanding work and I'm really looking forward to your next update!

Again.. thanks all.
Next update. Whilst I am tinkering with hulls and filling, sanding, repeat.. I am working on the base.
So my plan is to use some Gel Medium for the sea base.. because I reckon, ships on stands just look stoopid.
So first up mask out wheer the ship will be and cut that out
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/trident/trident6.jpg)
Ship test plonking.. some work has also been done on the for'ard deck missile bays as well.. woo hoo.. progress
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/trident/trident7.jpg)

Proceed... ;)
-
...at flank speed! >:( ( ;) )
Looking good so far! I've read the first of the Axis of Time books, unfortunately, thats all the Library has at the moment...I may have to splurge and order the others via Inter Library Loan...
-
Looking very good, I like where this is going
-
Yes coming along.. small update. But small update is better than no update >:(
Ok.. I have fitted some etch (uurgghh! and I though 1/35 was tiny) for sensor arrays and some of the railing and doors.
Then some detail parts like the metal storm turrets in the outriggers and Laser packs, which still need to be detailed a bit.
So next is probably painting stage and fitting stuff like the last of the railings, which I am slavishly following a good tutorial on a shipmodellers site due to not having done this sort of thing before at this scale.
And may never do again ;)

Sounds interesting! :) Do you have a link? Got a couple of ships planned and it might come in handy (ship noob as well)....
-
Wow that's one mighty fine update and it's nice to see how well everything comes together!

Very nice ..... it's been neat to see this coming along, that water effect look real good!

This is just one of many how to's out there. This one just made sense to me

Certainly looks sleek and fast. What are the chances of finding some 1:700 scale figures on water skis to tow behind it? :)

Coming along very nicely!

Thanks. :) Lots of valuable advice there. Bookmark'd! :)

Close to the finished call.
Ok.. more practice needed on etch rails.. these are.. well ... ordinary.
I got some 1/700 Merlin Helos at SMW2013, which was nice.

So there she is.. less base nameplate..

Wow! I was expecting something impressive but that is above and beyond, great job!!
-
That does look nice. Very stealthy and smooth-looking, too.
Cheers,

Outstanding build! :)

Outstanding build!!! :) :)

Just superb! I just love watching a build and how it all pulls together at the end ...... more please!!!! :icon_beer: 8)

Outstanding build ! :) :) :)
> Far more stable for air ops than standard hull.
> Can picture it as either major refitting modernization program for current ships or as new construction.
> Top quality scratch building and way of combining it with a kit :-*
> Oh,,, and water is also tops :-*
-
What an amazing build, brilliant finish!!! Sure looks the part, just lethal!!!! :-* :-*
-
Brain - Great build! The water looks realistic; how did you make it? The catamaran section looks like a spaceship squatting on a cruiser.
-
Wow that really finished up a treat!
You've got some mad skills, buzz!
Brian da Basher
-
Very very nice! I'm curious about the water effect too- do elucidate, pray!
-
Thanks guys.
The water effect I use at the moment for jobs like this is Acrylic gel medium
(http://www.derivan.com.au/assets/products/MM4-GelMedium250.jpg)
In this case I masked off the base (there is a pix above) where the ship went and painted various blues/grey colours to give the impression of depth a bit.
After that was ready, basically slopped this Gel gear on, but not too thickly other wise you will get some translucent bits where the stuff at the bottom does not cure clear. In itself that sometime works as well but for the painted base to show through clear is better.
Then using the Mk1 fingers in Latex gloves (please.. this stuff is a horror to get off) and a bamboo skewer or similar work up the peaks, wakes and the like
Over exaggerate the peaks as it will settle a bit, if found that putting your whole hand on and lifting away gives a nice random effect.
The just paint up the peaks with a bit of ivory colour paint.
When happy, gloss coat the lot.
I then cut out around the masks, this is important as this stuff is quite weak and will pull away easily so cut firmly and carefully remove the masks. Then the ship was replaced into the base with some Gel around the hull to hold it in plus give some wake to work with around the hull sides.
Works ok at this scale I reckon.
Cheers Brian T

Awesome build, Brian! :D
Not really a ship man (says the ex-RAN FAA aircraft tech armour modeller :-\ ) but this one's great!
Quick question (as I do have 1 or 2 ships to build in the stash) does this stuff cure hard or does it stay flexible, like silicon gel? ???
:)
Guy
-
Flexible, it is more akin to silicon in property... as it can tear really easy, as it says it is a Gel.
if you want something more solid.. sadly resin or one of the other Water products may be required.
Just done some water in epoxy resin which was working beautifully.. until I tried to be clever and botched it.
Hid the issues with a coat of this stuff.. so now I have depth with a nice enough river top from Gel.
-
Cool! 8)
Thanks, Brian!
