Now what if we move both engines to behind the pilot?

This would be a tail heavy beast, so I added a rear wheel as well:

Ever since I've been a kid, this is what I see in my mind when the subject of the Do-335 comes up:

I've never been able to bring myself to assemble one even though both the Monogram and Tamiya kits were purchased 1/3 a lifetime ago.

On this, and related ones, since the CofG would way back, why not replace the horizontal tail with a much larger wing, so that it approaches the condition of a tandem wing design?

"AufFlug" (Elevator-Plane) -- the AufFlug was a precursor of the TriebFlugel.  Boosted by rockets for take-off & lifting vertically without guide-rails ...... the rockets often failed to lift the aircraft sufficiently for air-speed to be obtained, crashing to the ground ... the prop-blades digging a deep hole & throwing up clouds of dirt & so it was christened "AugerFlug" by its pilots.

I built up a Tamiya Do 335 as a post-war Silberpfeil (Silver Arrow) racer several years ago,
shortly after it was released IIRC.

The backstory was that post-war there was a new international air-racing series with races that were
combination pylon and endurance events. Sort of like the Thompson races that gave birth to the Reno
air races, but a much longer course with races of longer duration. There would also have been Bendix style
cross-country races. I went so far as figuring out 'rules', breaking it down into single and twin engine
classes and then sub-classes by displacement etc. The aircraft paint schemes would have followed the
FAI international auto racing schemes:
Green = UK, Silver = Germany, Blue = France, Red =Italy, Blue&White = US etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_international_auto_racing_colors

So, the Dornier was built gear up and the gun troughs filled in, then painted overall Silver (Tamiya Aluminum
Gloss buffed up with SNJ aluminum powder) with the registration DO-335 across the bottom of the wings
and a Daimler-Benz logo on the cowling. The aircraft would have competed in the large displacement, twin-engine
class. The pilot was to be Rudi Stuck, fictional cousin of real world Auto Union Silberpfeil driver Hans Stuck.
I used Rudi as his first name in honor of another Auto Union driver, Rudi Caracciola.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Arrows

The model got crunched a couple years later, and I had intended to build another but never got around to it. I sold
the replacement kit and most of the others I had intended (that word again) to build for my fictional Air-GP series
about four years ago. I don't recall that I ever got any photos of the Dornier before it met its messy demise.

I am going with this and racer.  Like all profiles for what each is and art work of Japanese version.  Looking at Japanese version made me think of how 335 would be as post war in US Navy blue with Banshee/Panther like wing tip tanks.

Here's the aircraft Hitler was SUPPOSED to be on to fly out of besieged Berlin to Spain.

Mounted on twin rails deep underground, with a fortified door at the end of the rails opening briefly to allow it to escape, this aircraft was to fly Hitler, Goering, and Hanna Reitsch out of their bunker in Berlin. Hitler will sit up front with a view downward. Goering will sit in the main cockpit THINKING he is flying the plane (dummy controls installed), but Hanna will pilot it from the top seat. Jettisonable booster rockets will be on both sides.

This is a combo of D0-335, Ar-234 nose and jets. Paint scheme and markings will be "Fuhrermaschine", like the Fw-200 Hitler really had. I have an old Revell "Snark" missile rail-launch setup that will do nicely for this, AND have 1/72 figures for Hitler and Goering (Hanna will just be a HO-sale woman--she was tiny anyway).

Tank destroyer... With 3 30mm auto-cannons (like V-13 version) and rotary rocket launcher in bomb bay it could wreck havoc against allied tanks. And due its speed it can even live over western front battlefields.

As the Second World War wound down, Jack Northrop realized he was not going to be one the key players in the crowded post-war aviation business in the US. So he cast his eyes to the east for ideas and to the far east for a market.

He got in touch with Colonel Harold E. Watson of Operation LUSTY (LUftwaffe Secret TechnologY) fame and asked him if he could make a wish list, which German or Japanese aircraft (real or paper) would he build today.

He came up with this short list:

Arado AR. 555
Dornier Do 335
Gotha Go 229
Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden
Messerschmidt Me 262
Messerschmidt P 1099
Messerschmidt P 1101

(This list is no way represents what I have in my stash  ;) )

Jack took this list, went to Washington and asked if he could negotiate for the rights to build these aircraft for off shore sales with the provision that some jobs will remain in the US, he would not compete with US firms and no US intellectual property would be used in the aircraft. Jack got his wish and so off he went to looking for a partner. Jack created a business spin-off called Northrup Aviation.

After a few months of presentations and false starts, Jack a came to terms with an unknown Korean firm called Samsung.

So both parties agreed to form Samsung Aircraft - Northrop Aviation or SANA.  First it was suggested the the new company be called NASA but that sounded too wimpy and spacey.

So here we have the 3rd aircraft build by SANA, the F-55A Camaro. It is based on the Dornier Do335A-1 airframe. This aircraft flew with the 14th Fighter Squadron (Heavy) out of Suwon. This is the CO's aircraft hence the colour extra trim on the nose, fuselage and wing tips. It is armed with two 60 and eight 80 LB rockets.

For size comparison, my itty bitty Spitfire PR XXa.

Note the ex-RLM official tail stand support nut.

So you say to yourself: geez not another NMF aircraft Carl? Give it up, will ya buddy. There is more to modeling than NMF. Sorry, I just like NMF finishes. But I promise to use another colour in the future. Say Gloss Sea Blue with FAA markings.  ;D

Future SANA aircraft builds will include:

B-31A Vendetta
B-33A Viceroy
F-52A Skylark
F-53A Firebird
F-57A Impala
F-62A Polaris
RF-55B Camaro Type R
TF-55A Camaro Type T
T-25A Novice

No, I will not match up the builds with the “Watson” list. You will just have to wait and see what comes out.

Build Notes:

The Do335 was a real pain. The engines and landing gear are mega over-engineered. Good fit, almost no PSR required. Just a complex build.

What I used:
Dragon Do335A-1
Tamiya Spray Bombs - Gloss and flat aluminum/silver
Model Master Insignia Blue and OD
Decals are from the Academy ROKAF F-51D
60/80 LB rockets from the Academy Spitfire XIVe and the Academy F6F-3 Hellcat.

Love the ROK 335 and the entire backstory. Given the treatment of his xb-35/yb-49 by Stuart Symington, Northrop should have indeed flexed his muscle in other markets.

Yes, it would have to be a 'very' huge single float considering the all up weight of the D0-335

Another way would be to have the radiator in the pylon, just like the Supermarine Seagull.  IMO (having got 1/72 models of both in the stash), the Seagull's fuselage would be about the right size for a float too ---

The 335 was our local club's mini-GB subject. I think I have pics posted elsewhere on BTS but if not, I'll post them here.

Here's the thread:

Always considered the Do 335 would be good candidate for that role with a system upgrade to bring it up to modern standards and requirements.
Even in its original form it was quite a versatile design capable of many roles.

Twin contra-props?  Interesting way of absorbing the power on an aircraft which didn't need them...

I think I'd consider the twin contra-props only if I was re-engining with that 16-cylinder engine Daimler-Benz test flew but never put in production.  Otherwise, the existing props should be quite adequate as has been demonstrated in flight.  Other than that quibble, it does look right for the purpose.

Considering what sort of power the Reno Racers have got their engines up to (5000 hp), I'd say the contra-props are about right --- it is after all a Reno Racer type

Nice.

Pity my Tamiya Silber Pfeil bit the dust.
Built it gear up and 'twas hanging from the ceiling, it fall down go boom.  :icon_zombie:

Anyhow, I left it with stock props but eliminated the forward annular radiator, faired the nose profile
down to spinner diameter, and cropped the wings. All silver, the only markings were registry D-O335,
small DB emblems and pilot's name, Rudi Stuck, supposedly the cousin of Auto Union driver Hans Stuck.
Pilot figure was painted in the appropriate white flying suit and flying helmet.
 ;)

I should probably redo it some day.  :-X
