Airfix Royal Sovriegn
« on: May 02, 2015, 06:56:02 PM »
Hi all I won this on ebay and as described the bowsprit was broken, well i've fixed the bowsprit

to be honest I dont think I will be staring this before my hols in a weeks time but I am excited by the prospect.
the moulding for such an old kit I think is outstanding, its certainly equal to the Heller La reale.

well I know I shouldn't as were off on hols tomorrow but I couldn't resist

Just wanted to see how it compared to the heller la reale and I think it is deffo as good, once I've added the black it will be stunning.

There is a certain satisfaction to building these Classic ships (Outside of the Mr Bean reference). I got the urge to do the Airfix Revenge a few years back after reading about the ship and her exploits and was very happy with the way it came out, even for a first attempt. I ended up doing it as a wreck after her last battle.

Continue on, I am looking forward to seeing it progress.

Hi all well back off hols and made a tentative start on this one

The kit comes with stubby half cannons for the lower decks( I may live to regret this but Ive decided to open up the gun ports and make some whole guns to put behind them, since they are below decks and you wont see much of them they wont need to be too detailed or accurate, and I am only doing one side as they would never do a broadside on both sides, I mean what admiral in his right mind would choose to take the risk of a broadside on both sides at the same time) also it means I've only got to make 30 guns and carriages. I also have to make part decks for one side.

Wow, nice work.
You know, I cannot help but think that some nice flickering LED on the inside of the gun deck would make an interesting tweak to your great work on the guns.

Hi all decided to guild this side before I put the top guns in as it will be harder when they are poking out.

I may give the flickering led idea some consideration mate.

Hi all I've decided to do something different with this and it involves this

It flickers just like a real candle and the other one is kaput so I developed a cunning plan so, off with the transom

can you guess where this is going
drilled out the windows

then removed the rest of the window
yes thats right I'm going to RC it, only joking, lighting up the state cabins.

Hi all a small update on this, The transom sticks out past the gallaries on the sides and I didnt like the way Airfix just moulded them flat so I've rounded the edges and reguilded them

also the grills on the prow are not moulded all the way through so I drilled all the holes out.

and I've hacked the candle apart and reconfigured it

Great job so far! The guns, guilding and lights really improve the model.

Dumb question - did they use real gold leaf on the original ships with guiled details, or just some (cheaper) gold colored paint?

It was real gold that's why Charles introduced the ships tax, to pay for it she cost then 67 thousand which is about what the victory cost nearly 100 years later.

Hi all here is an update on this one. All the guns in place (still got to tie some down) all the closed gunports glued in.

I've discovered that the slots in the grating for the bowsprit tie downs are not there so had to make them.

Hi all well I know nothing about rigging so I'm going to do a cross between the Airfix instructions and ones I've downloaded off the internet (I could not possibly do them the way they are supposed to be, I don't have a clue as to where to start) I dont even know what the different lines are called.

also I bought this to do the ratlines with

but This came with the Airfix Wasa kit

which would be the easiest to use.

Hi all well the amati Loom A Line is total rubbish, the airfix doodah is brill though, so that is 10 quid down the drain, the airfix whatsit was free with the Wasa.

Rigging is deffinitely not my thing, I am thinking maybe take the top mast off just leave the lower masts and have it as its having a refit, don't know

Well I know it's not finished but it's sold, my boss's husband came round to show me his car (some little horrors standing on a bridge lobbed a rock as he drove under and stoved in his drivers pillar and windscreen (the cars only a fortnight old £90,000 worth) he spied it and the Reale and said the Reale was too big for his new seaside house but he would buy the sovriegn.

Until very recently, my knowledge of the Age of Sail was largely limited to a handful of films. I've been tearing my way through David Weber's 'Safehold' series, in which a pre-industrial sea-going society rapidly upgrades from oar-driven galleys to men o'war like these. I'm impressed with your work here and in the other thread.

Hi all here is an update on this one

Hi all as a note People keep asking me how I do these sails, well here is a short guide, they are so easy.

First you need the white spirit you clean your brushes in ( you know the jar or bottle or whatever that all the sludge builds up in( I keep mine topped up in a little bottle as I use it for other things too)

you  get your vac formed sails , your brush and your white spirit.

then you get a good brushfull of the sludge in the bottom of the bottle and scrub it all over the sail(both sides)

allow it to dry and give a second coat if required

then with a downwards motion wipe the muck off till you're happy with the effect

and there you are, see how easy it is.

Thanks guys well my Rolf took delivery of it today and said it is totally amazing, said he knew it would be good as he had seen the way it was going, but that it was way better than he had expected, he recons it's the framing that finishes it off.
Ps thanks Brian (the tenners in the post)
