What if Jack Northrup had traveled to Britain.
« on: May 21, 2017, 03:08:11 AM »
Well I started something I've been kicking around for some time now. Picked up a Lindberg Victor kit a while back for half price at a LHS. I was really only interested in the fuselage so what to do with the wings? I had some thick plastic sheet laying around and well, anyway, now I have the start of a flying wing, British style.

Cockpit is from a 1/144th scale F-4.

Underside, lots of room for bomb bays.......

The open area around the cockpit has been filled with Aves epoxie sculpt. Lots of sanding to do. I wish I had lots of extra wheels as the Lindberg ones are over simplified at best.

Any thoughts on paint and markings?

My vote is for anti-flash white with pale roundels.  But hemp over light grey would be nice, too.

Boxed in the underside and added a second layer of Aves. Much PSR ahead.

Ditto - maybe make it as an Armstrong Whitworth and tie it in with their A.W.52.  Say Jack Northrop worked there somehow.  Maybe the Armstrong Whitworth "Vengence" bomber part of the V-force

Funny you should come up with that, I've got a plan to build an XB-35 or 49 for the RAF. Only it would have a short fuselage section sticking out the front for the cockpit/crew and front u/c.  Something along the lines of the A.W.52. My story is that it was built by Armstrong Whitworth after the wing design was handed over by Jack Northrop to them because Northrop kept getting shafted by the US Government and he had enough of it.

How about some folk leaving Northrop and moving to Britain after the cancellation of the Northrop wings and bringing their technology, knowledge, and ideas with them to Armstrong Whitworth?  Along, perhaps, with preliminary sketches of more advanced wings.

And then combined with the kinked sweep pattern to make it look British!
I like the Vengence name. I may have to look for some faded roundels to go with white or hemp.

White Vengeance would be superb, or how about overall PR blue, solid blue & red roundels, black leading edges? Vengeance sounds like a
Vickers name, but it suits the bird beautifully.
Top whiffing marks tho, great concept.

If it's great, I did it. If it's naff, I found it.

Round 2 of PSR.

Underside is now covered.

I had to fill the ginormous gaps around the ailerons. You could throw a baseball through them.

Round 3 applied.

I'm going to search for alternative landing gear wheels and struts. Kit wheels are little better than plastic lumps and too big for this scale anyway. Maybe something from an airliner kit. Hmmm... I have a B-52 kit in the stash........

You could add a MAD boom out the back, refuelling probe and then do the hemp over grey as a maritime patrol aircraft version.

 ;)
