Kinetic 1/48 SU-33 WIF
« on: February 21, 2017, 05:24:08 PM »
Hi guys

It has been a while since I last posted anything here - let alone a WIP, but alas, here I am with my newest project and one that I hope to actually finish!
Using the new Kinetic SU-33 as the basis for it, I am torn between 2 schemes.

Here are my choices:
Scheme #1)

Scheme #2)

and here is where I am up to with it - which is needless to say not terribly far at all:

I am heading back home to Nu Zuland for a week or so as of Friday to go drink and play with sheep  ;D , so there won't be any updates till I get back sorry I am sure you will manage just fine until then  :)

However, in the mean time, could you  please help me choose which scheme I should go for - one or two?
Cheers
MH

I pity the sheep! ;D ;)

As for the camo's: I'm torn, I really like them both, but I was wondering what the 1st scheme would look like in the 2nd scheme's colours - replace the pale-blue with white, the mid-blue with the grey & the dark-blue with the mid-blue?

I suppose you could vice-versa that, which could also look interesting but maybe not quite as funky.

I'm guessing it would look a little bit like this - just with more blue:

I like both but in each of their respected colours. I love the 3 blue combination - just not so heavily panel lined.

I would almost consider this one too if it weren't so bloody complex but in the 3 blue mix:

I always like the Swedish splinter camo but I know I could never do it right! My vote if you are up to the challenge.

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

My vote would be for the second of your original choices.

I'm kinda leaning towards the second one but in the first one's colours  - so replace the grey with medium blue, the white with Sky blue and the dark blue remains as dark Prussian / midnight blue
I think that could work?

I'd go for the second option, otherwise

I will be in CHCH but only for a couple of days then it's up north to see the folks in Motueka, so unfortunately, I won't have the time to go, but otherwise I would have gone had I been in Palmy

As nice as the Viggen scheme is, I just don't have the patience for it presently. I think I'm going to go with scheme one as I like the colours and I do enjoy splinter camo. Next one though (1/32 SU-33 once released) I may do the second one.
Here is where I am up t at the moment
Its a nice kit, but throw out the instructions as they are all wrong. Part numbers are either wrong or back to front (left for right etc)
This is the first kit I've had in years where the bay doors actually fit closed! Yay!!!!!
Right pictures:

Everything is only dry fitted presently but I am hoping to get the 2 halves joined tonight and from there to won't be far away from the paint shop!
Till next time

Ah, a lesson to be learned! Pre-wash the panel lines! :)

Looking very nice, mate! :) :)

especially when the panel lines are very shallow! The lines on this kit are all over the shop - some deep, some shallow-to-almost-non-existent
Hence why I am washing them now so I can see what detail I am loosing when it comes time to sand :)

sorry for the delay in updating this - I have been rather busy of late

So, top layer of paint is on and I will be starting the bottom half tomorrow! I am pretty happy with how it's coming out so far and I like the colours

That's it for now, but I shall be back again soon with an update.

Looking really great!!  I may borrow this color scheme for a land-based Su-34 in Soviet Naval Aviation usage against CVBG's.

Thanks for the encouragement guys :)

I have been chugging along at this and have now started the metallic areas - such fun. I am having issues with the light blue paint lifting off the surface at the slightest hint of tack from tape. I have tried de-tacking the tape and so on but still, it comes right off at the hint of a moth's fart. Shit paint is all I can say, but I will persevere and get it done.
Still lots and lots of small paint jobs that need doing and lots of touch ups etc, but I'll get there. It doesn't help that this is sharing my build time with the QM2 and with the arrival of some new sci-fi goodies, it's going to be really hard to make the both of these get done without starting another build

So, some pictures:

As you can clearly see above in that last picture, that is what I have to content with. Bloody Model Color paints. Give me Gunze or Tamiya any day!

Well, I shall be off but I will hopefully post an update again soon

Will keep in mind your advice regarding paint brands.  I've got one of the new mold Zvezda Su-33's and this does offer inspiration.

The metallics are all but done and I am pretty happy with how they've come out:

I am getting there slowly but I am constantly fighting some lifting paint. Word of warning - don't use Model Air light blue - it's shit!
