From real world:

Quote
Saab Supplying Sweden with Firefighting Capabilities
(Source: Saab; issued April 03, 2020)

Saab has received an order from MSB, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, regarding Sweden's aerial firefighting capabilities. The contract is valid during the years 2020-2023.

The order is for the capability to fight fires with two firefighting aircraft, from 1 April to 30 September, through to 2023. Under the contract there is also the opportunity to trigger an option for two more aircraft, beginning with the 2021 fire season. This resource will be available for Sweden and for EU.

Saab has during a period of one year established aerial firefighting capabilities using the Air Tractor AT-802 F firefighting aircraft, with the associated pilot and technician skills, as well as the specific permits for their operation.

"We are part of Sweden's national security and our specialist expertise and flight permits made it natural for us to complement our operations in Nyköping with aerial firefighting capabilities," says Ellen Molin, Head of Saab's Support and Services business area. "It is important to have a prompt national response to forest fires, and this service is going to help deliver that."

The AT-802 F is a water-bombing aircraft that in the event of a forest fire can release 35,000-50,000 litres of water per hour. The firefighting aircraft will be based in Nyköping, where Saab already has aviation operations for, among other things, aerial target towing and support for the Swedish Coast Guard’s aircraft.

From Nyköping, firefighting aircraft can within two hours reach Copenhagen or eastern Finland and within three hours, Luleå in the north of Sweden. If necessary, the firefighting aircraft can be based at another location with advanced technical and maintenance resources. Rapid response to fires is crucial.

Saab serves the global market with world-leading products, services and solutions within military defence and civil security. Saab has operations and employees on all continents throughout the world. Through innovative, pragmatic and collaborative work, Saab constantly develops, adapts and improves new technology to meet the changing requirements of our customers.

A version of the V-22 in US Forest Service firebomber markings?  A miniature version of MAFSS in the aircraft and with the ability to hover over a body of water and refill the tanks would make for useful capability.  You'd probably need better filtration on the intakes but that's been demonstrated.  I could see this as a role for a number of the early LRIP aircraft.

Random idea:  Skyraider firebomber
That would be nice to see if it were to be based on the AD-5/A-1E/A-1F/A-1G as there would be more internal volume without excessive modification to the airframe.

I've read somewhere, the Skyraider had a bomb bay but wasn't used ---- a fuel tank was put in the space.

Re-engine older A-10's with more powerful TF34/CF34 variants and use them for pinpoint drops on hot spots.

Not the Skyraider but more likely the BTD Destroyer that was the predecessor to the Skyraider.  It had a bomb bay by design.

That's a bit coincidental you should mention CF34's Evan, this last couple of days I've been sorting out details for another project I have in mind, which revolves around CF34's. The subject involved is a CRJ-200 which I'm going to make into a FASS AEW, I was thinking of upgrading the engines by putting the spare nacelles from an A-10 on it. However, after doing a bit of research --- it turns out they have the same engine with practically the same power output ---  :-X  CRJ has CF34's, A-10 has the military version, TF34

So while building my Twin Tail T-33, I had got out a F-80/T-33/F-94/TV-1/T2V project box to find something. In the box was various builds in various states of completion. I had been swapping noses and other parts around to create other variants and looking at them again after quite a few years of being on the backburner, I got thinking about what other noses I could put on a F-80 or T-33.

I had read somewhere and it could have been something someone had said in a thread, that the P-80 had elements of the P-38 used, like the nose and wings. I've not found anything to confirm that though ---

But I had a thought, what about a firedog control aircraft with a droop snoot nose from a P-38 put on it. I'd use a T-33, but turn the back seater around so it would be facing backwards. So one spotter in the nose and one in the rear seat, the pilot concentrating on guiding the fire bombers along the drop line ---

EDIT: (a bit later), I just got one of the Dragon P-38 kits out, a pathfinder one. The nose parts are moulded all in clear styrene, and matching up the nose to the T-33 I'm building, this is very doable ---- And I just happen to have two of the droop snoot kits too.

Thanks guys - that helps.  Does anyone know what standard crop duster kits are available?  Doesn't have to be an existing firebomber.

Ideally something similar to an Air Tractor AT-502 in 1/48.  The best I can come up with from the stash for now is the 1/48 ELAGA kit of the Embraer EMB 202 Ipanema:

I also have a 1/48 Sharkit Transavia PL-12 Airtruk (which could be an alternative option):

Well, it would take some (perhaps more than "some") scratchbuilding, but a Cessna 188 AgWagon can be built from Monogram's Cessna 180 kit.  The wings, tail surfaces, landing gear, and engine/propeller section from the firewall forward can be used directly.

The AS.42 was used post-war by the Italian police, evidently they were painted cherry red,
which suggests a fire-fighting vehicle.

Convert the anti-tank gun to a water-cannon with a hose connecting it to a tanker, the hose
stored in the nose in place of the spare.

Command vehicle with the gun removed and more seats added, plus comms gear?

Or?

Apparently during serious bushfires around Sydney a decade or more ago they set up airport fire track across the fire front in one critical area and continuously blasted the fire with their water cannon.  A fleet of milk tanker tracks had been conscripted to bring a constant supply of water to the trucks with the water cannon.

IIRC in California a few years ago there was a problem getting water to the fire trucks. It wasn’t the lack of tanker trucks but the unloading process was holding things up. Problem solved by using concrete trucks which didn’t hold as much as an 18 wheel tanker but could unload very quickly into the portable “swimming pools” that the fire trucks where drawing from. Diorama possibility?

And they’re off! Neptune’s T-15 kicks off her season in Lake City, Florida today. Many thanks to Greg Doyle who shared this photo of T-15 on the Saddle Ridge fire in 2019.

Work in progress ::

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

That’s interesting! It looks easy to convert by just adding a tank from the spares box. Of course in RW it’s probably more complicated than that.
