OK, this build is for the Floaty GB but the chances of it being finished before the end date is nil, nix nada & zilch but it has given me the incentive to start it.
In progress shots will be put in here but I'd prefer comments in the GB thread until it ends.
Thanks!
Guy

Photo's of minimal progress:
Almost all the lumpy-bumpy bits are scratch-built;

Most was built from my memory without references but I've brightened up the panels because it's not a Tracker. The vertical control column is what our (RAN) E's & G's had (don't know what model the kit's front-panel style column came from), I'm pretty sure I have the wing-fold controls modelled on the top panel somewhere, & the curtain is to block the void behind the cockpit.

Next update:
The fuselage bunged together with some filler strips (more required) & the radome nose fitted.

Wow! Great work so far. I'm impressed with your ability to envision this. Looks like its going to be one of those "it's so ugly, it's cute" kind of planes (like a Wyvern or a Gannet).
-
Thanks, Acree!

Agreed :) That is some serious chopping and filling ... and an amazingly close fit! Nice work :)
BTW, Any chance of a land airliner Sunderland derivative as a byproduct of this great build?
-
Thanks, mate! :)

Distinct possibility. ;)
-
<...> That is some serious chopping and filling ... and an amazingly close fit! Nice work :) <...>
My thoughts exactly. :)
Yeah, yeah, nice greeblies added to the cockpit, yada, yada, yada, but LOOK at those RIDICULOUSLY clean cuts! :o Mind = blown.
-
Thanks for that, makes breaking a razor saw blade worth it! :D :) :)
-
So, after a couple of rounds of PSR, the fuselage is in the following state;
More needs to be done before it's completely complete (landing gear wells, landing gear & the butt-end) & I can fit the wings & engines, which are what I'll start work on next.
-
:)
-
Looks good.
-
Thanks! :)
-
Wow gutsy as hell and came out so smooth you'd never know it's not a single, molded part!
Looking forward to more,
Brian da Basher
-
Taking on look of a real FB-2G !
-
Thanks, guys! :)
BdB: For once I really got careful with the PSR, instead of rushing it, &, although there are still faults, it's much better than my usual results. :))
-
OK, so this is a fail for the Floaty GB. :(
This is where I got to:
Wings are just dry-fitted to the fuselage & the nacelles are just dry-fitted to the wings.

However, the build goes on! ;D
Looks like a bit of internal structural framing is required, then it's PSR time! (Oh, joy! ::) )
-
Damn! That looks good.
-
Thanks, Greg! :icon_alabanza:
-
I really like how those engines look as a contrast to the shape of the hull!
What an impressive vision to see that and it looks to be coming together smoothly!
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks, BdB! :icon_alabanza:
-
That is awesome!
-
Awesome styrene surgery!!!
Did you flip the wings or just the engines to get the top-wing mount?
-
Thanks guys! :icon_alabanza:
The nacelles have been flipped & fitted to the opposite wings, I've also cut off the front of the nacelles & re-attached them right-side up, & I've fitted the rear section of the nacelle (a separate unit) up the right way ... hence the big V-shaped gap at the rear.
Now, back to the PSR! :o
-
There is movement on this but it's the slow & painstaking scratch-build construction of a "Catalina"-style main-gear system.
So far pretty happy with the results but still a fair way to go.
I might do photo's tomorrow, if I get the chance, just to give you a sneak preview.
:)

Here they are;
Landing gear (still a WiP):

Very nice job on that landing gear Guy :) :) :) The top strut should have a hinge in the middle, when doing my Sunderland's gear I had thought it was a hydraulic cylinder but then I had an opportunity to look at a real Catalina/Canso gear while at a museum and saw that it was a rigid strut with a hinge midway, where the strut folded in half as it retracted. There was a cylinder too, but it attaches to the top wish-bone like this below
-
This is looking so good it makes me want to build one!
Grumman greyhound fuselage with the six blade turbo props and a t tail?

Yeah, mine's a long way short of the white-metal stuff but it will, soon, have an imitation joint on the main strut - when I've worked out the best spot for it (probably the middle). :)

This is love king so good it makes me want to build one!

With right pieces combined the right way as on FB-2G; "it makes me want to build one." -- too.
Is extra interesting cuz I worked on flight line that included S-2 Trackers.
Enjoy progress pictures. Keep posting. :)
-
Very nice work!
I love the cockpit and the new shape of the fuselage!
Brilliant!

This might be a bit late but what about the Grumman Albatross landing gear? Not quite the same as the Catalina but it did fold up into the sides of the fuselage.
-
Thanks for that, Jeff! :)
I hadn't looked at the Albatross landing gear for some strange reason but, looking at it, I appear to have come up with a bit of a cross between it & the Catalina gear (mostly Cat, thuough). ;)
So, I'm happy with my idea, I just need to execute it correctly, now. :-\
-
Right! Getting to a point where photo's should follow in a couple of days.
Had to rebuild the landing gear (a measurement error meant they were too short).
Wheel wells are done, floats & struts are done, wings & tail are on, comm's dome fitted to the tail & EPIRB/PLB locator domes fitted to the wings.
Still a tiny bit of PSR & some odds-&-ends to be fitted, then I'll hit it with a coat of grey primer & take some photo's.
Thanks for your patience! :)

There is still some touch-up & fix-up work to be done (primer's good like that ::) ) but, pretty much, ready for the (very basic) paint scheme.
Decals are another issue. Printing my own has become a non-event. I may be able to wing it with what I have, though. We'll see.
She's going to be a "Royal Australian Navy Coast Guard" SAR bird.
Cheers! :icon_beer:

Looks better and better :)
-
That is some amazing work with the landing gear. Along with the rest of this project it has been quite a metamorphosis from two kits with different scales in to this almost finished project.
Bravo Zulu!
-
Damn! That is looking great.

Damn! That is looking great.
Yeah! the transformation is brilliant :-*

impressive !

Thanks heaps, gents! :icon_alabanza:

It's coming together seamlessly!
Fantastic and it was a blast catching up!

Will it be yellow like a CL 215 or red and white?

I am loving this

Impressive work, so cute and neat!

Thanks, guys! :icon_alabanza:
kerick: Still working on the colours but ... "Yes!" :-\
-
Two colours on. Two to go. :)
-
Third colour down & a sneak-peek of the paint scheme.
Why I keep on punishing myself with those 4 colours, I'll never know! :-\
-
^ Because it looks f***ing awesome, that's why! :icon_beer:
-
This just goes from strength to strength.
-
Thank you, gentlemen! :icon_alabanza:
We'll see how she looks after I've tried to fix the errors. :icon_crap:
-
Errors? All I see is lots of gorgeous!
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks, BdB! :)
I wish! ::)
Too much seepage under the masking (I really thought I'd got it all down really tight, too! :icon_sueno: ) & a thin film of over-spray further away than I expected from the paintwork. :icon_crap:
Mostly fixed, now, to within Wombat-acceptable limits, although I may do a bit more sanding on some spots & re-spray some white.
-
Is so RW correct. Scale-O-Rama masterpiece. :-*
-
Painting is almost complete & the main build has the 1st half of the 1st coat of gloss on & drying (could take a while, it's cold & wet here).
Hope to get the 2nd half of the gloss coat down today & maybe some photo's tonight, if I'm lucky.
-
Just after midnight & here are some photo's of where I'm at right now.

I'm working on getting the prop's & landing gear ready for fitment - after I've fixed up the new paint flaws, slapped on the decals, semi-glossed & dirtied her up a bit.
-
Excellent! This kit bash has been quite the undertaking but the end result is looking fantastic.
-
extremely beautifully done !
-
Thank you, gents! :)
Has been one hell of an undertaking, Jeffry, but it's still going to be a "half-metre" model.
Mind you, I'm happy with that because I build for me.
I'll probably take her to the SA Plastic Model Expo in October & she probably won't score well but, like several of my other builds, I'll get to hear people talking about her & thinking, which is much more rewarding!
-
:)
-
Thanks Paul! :)
-
Beautiful as a dream!
:-* :-* :-*
-
Only if the dream's a nightmare! :o
Not really! ;)
Thanks, Andonio! :icon_alabanza:

Is it finished yet? Is it finished yet? Is it finished yet? Is it finished yet? Is it finished yet? Is it finished yet?
>:D >:D >:D
-
Almost there! ;)
-
I am truly and utterly speechless. :-* :icon_alabanza:
-
Thanks, Zac! Getting a little closer!
Had a setback with paintwork on the the prop's but I've rectified that & I'm millimetring forward (that's even slower than inching, btw).
Note: Decaling each individual (approx.) 4mm high number/letter/symbol is time consuming &, often, frustrating! :o
-
Right! With any luck this'll be finished today! :D
-
Sorry, no reveal today. :(
I've been swearing (silently) for the last hour & a half. After all this time. After at least half-a-dozen dry fits & checks.
I glued on the landing gear and it's SHORT!!! :o
Not by 1 or 2 mm, no-o, by a good 5mm, at least! A-a-a-a-a-r-r-rgh! :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:
Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
So, I shall re-visit the landing gear, starting tomorrow (now that it's ruined my birthday present to myself) & I shall fix it. :icon_punal:
-
TAH-DAH! :D
OK, finally finished! She's as good as she's going to get.
There are faults but there are, also, some wins (I, personally, love the exhaust staining).
Overall: I'm very happy with the result, despite the hiccups & the headaches.
So, for your perusal & comment, I give you the Grumman FB-2G Grebe in Royal Australian Navy Coast Guard service with 816 Sqn ca. 1999;

Great finish :)
From the beginning there were premises for a successful model,I love it !!!
-
That is amazing!!
Both the build and the paint are outstanding!
Makes me want to build one with turbo props!
-
My grandpa was on the TF-1 Trader, so I just love this. This is a fantastic bit of work.
Cheers,

Wow did this baby ever finish up a treat!
The extensive mods and excellent paint work make this beauty a winner all the way!

You need to enter the Grebe in the next JMN sponsored model show. :icon_fsm:
Awesome work. Great attention to engineering and details.

8) :icon_alabanza: O. M. G. What a build! I love the tracker anyway, but the grebe looks even better.
Not only is the paint job smart and fitting, but like you, I think the dirty up staining is just right. Not so
much that the plane looks neglected, but enough to show that she is a working airframe.
I have just gone out to my hallway to get my hat, which I am now taking off to you Sir.
Beautiful kite!
Ian :-* :-* :-*
-
wonderfully done !
and the tracker is cracking ;)
-
Top stuff :)
-
Most excellent :D
Now if only the Orstralya Gumment was clever enough to actually invest in stuff like this at that time
-
*tips hat* Absolutely gorgeous piece of work! Bravo!!!
-
It was great watching the Grebe coming together, but the end result is fantastic!

Thank you all very much, gentlemen! It makes the effort & frustration (at times) worth it. :icon_alabanza: :icon_alabanza: :icon_alabanza:

Only just saw this man, one word, OUTSTANDING :-* :-*
Looks so much like a Grumman Albatross it's not funny, love the colour scheme, 816Sqn ::) ::) ;D

Sorry only just caught up with this one.
What a beautiful piece of craftsmanship - a great concept, well executed and finished to perfection. Whiffing at its very best! Bravo good Sir, bravo. :)

Thanks, mate! :icon_alabanza:
Doing a SciFied M1117 for a GB on WIM at the moment. I'll post pic's in the Sci Fi forum when I've made a bit more progress.
Then I'll be doing something else armour - I feel I've been letting the side down lately. :-[

My friend, I'm utterly speechless. Bravo. Just brilliant work all-round.

Seeing FB-2G in model show pictures reminds me again how excellent it is in concept and in build & finish :-*
-
Thanks, mate!
-
Came to this one late, but then I can see the complete build thread.
WOOOOOOOW! really nice result, would not have dreamed of mating those two aircraft. It doesn't matter if you do not win any prizes, you can smother yourself in the smugness of a whiff excellently done <----- insert wildly clapping emoji here-------- >.
nice one !
Mog

Thanks, Mog! Highly appreciated! :icon_alabanza:

My goodness OW, your Grebe is just outstanding! :)) I think it contains every element a great WIF should have, most notably talent 8) Exceptionally well done, my friend. Any idea of how many hours invested? (I may have missed this)
Best regards,
Kem

Thanks, Kem!
If I had any idea about the number of hours I put into a build I might question my sanity. :-\
So, I don't keep track of how long a build takes, it takes as long as it takes. In this case it has taken more hours than the ASLAV 1A2 but less that the High Mobility Battlefield Logistics Transport (which, still, isn't quite finished). ;)
-
Studied FB-2G Grebe build again. Amazed with RW credibility appearance. Is inspiring for one with bit of USN time.
Challenging as PBH-417 build was; FB-2G build has me considering possibilities for another flying boat or seaplane. Some less RW-ish than either our builds. Am contemplating a few ideas mild to kinda wild.
Thanks for keeping me seaplaney inspired.
-

Like to do/try what you did. Graft flying boat bottom onto land plane. End up 1/72 and likely be a scale-o-rama.
Have a first concept to gather kits for. Ruffly size up fit for doability. Take it from there...............
