My first step is making sure its a very "In-scale" black, in other words its an "off Black" or dark gray:

Here is a IMHO a good looking Corsair where the author used Black mixed with Red Brown:

Compare to the real thing (which is parked outside, so may be more "faded" than was the case in service):

I also REALLY like this BF-110 though. It looks like it was panel shaded in various colors:

Seen many 160th aircraft up close and they are very much a dark dark grey with many shades and panels:

The Chinook demonstrates it well because its large size is a shows the variations well.

Remember when adding a gloss coat that is permanently darkens the color, so take that into account.

Looking for more articles and other tidbits but this is what I have so far  :)

A technique I used on a 1/72 SR-71 Blackbird - cover aircraft in Railmatch 'Roof Soot' colour enamel aerosol, then use successive blac washes to get the colour darker.  I finished up with a coat of matt Railmatch varnish.
Looked quite realistic!

While I have to accept that this Me-110 is a wonder, I prefer the way the Corsair in weathered. Just perfect.

Gotta be honest, at first I thought that the first two were some kind of "stellar" camo scheme! The rubbed look is cool and actually looks a lot like the blackbird at Pima when it was stored outdoors. And with the local blackbirds (feathered type) the first pic was accurate too....  :(

Great idea getting some iron brown into the mix too.
