Title: 24-Hour build - WHIF AVGP Grizzly
Post by: tankmodeler on January 30, 2020, 02:25:19 AM
Last weekend there was an online 24-hour build challenge. Start and finish a build in 24 hours. Noon to noon.

I chose the Trumpeter AVGP Grizzly and, because I'm a masochist, I also chose to scratchbuild a conversion.

Behold, the ultimate in post zombie apocolypse, family suburban runabout, the GM Diesel Canada Grizzly Stake Body pickup.

It needs more weathering and a bit more stowage, which I will add this later, but as is, it is a finished model in 24 hours. I even managed 6 1/2 hours sleep and two square meals!

As my British friends migh say, I'm dead chuffed with how it turned out.

the photos are about 2 hrs apart through the build.

Cargo bed perfect touch for off duty use picking up lumber or bark for the house.

Excellent concept and build. To me, the Cadillac-Gage turret on the Grizzly always looked too small. Here, it seems bigger ... and appropriately menacing

The 48 hour build? Sure, I'll submit it. Don;'t ahve images with a clock face, mind, so I might be out of scope on the rules, but the postings I did on facebook are over a specific 24 hour period.

And a totally plausible version for the AVGP Life Extension Project.

@TankModeler - where did you source the side rails and tailgate parts for the cargo section on your LAV?  Scratch-Built or scrounged?

Essentially scratchbuilt.

I had, inthe depths of my spares collection, an ancient (like I bought them 25-30 years ago) set of lumber stock for an HO railway lumberyard. The largest pieces had "woodgrain" that was waaaaay too big, even in 1/35, much less HO, but the pieces were the right size and I just cut them down and added the C channel structure from Plastruct and then added Grandt Line bolts to hold them in place.

Probably took me 1.5 - 2 hours of my build time to do the stake body walls and another 90 minutes to cut away the hull and scratchbuild the new truck bed portion.

If I was doing it with more time I'd have added tie-downs to the bed, hinges and brackets to hold the stake body pieces and a few more details, but I'm pretty please with it as it is.

@TankModeler - I have that same set of HO scale stacked lumber and yes, the wood grain details are over the top.

This is amazing for a 24 hour build. Another model absolutely screaming out for a diorama treatment

Not a diorama, but I am going to try and get it onto a scenic base for an upcoming contest. Some broken concrete and sidewalk plus a few "jersey barriers" and some refuse, etc.

That will work, looking forward to the result.
