Title: Armed Trucks
Post by: Jeffry Fontaine on April 10, 2012, 02:13:26 AM
Also known as Gun Trucks or Technicals.

Anthony Guarderas is building an M915 Guntruck (http://www.network54.com/Forum/110741/thread/1333913627/M915+Guntruck) and has shared some work in progress images of the project at the Missing-Lynx forums.

That redoes the visuals that accompany C.W. McCall's song ''Convoy".

Neat project.

How about a gun truck that predates the above that mates an M54 series 5 Ton Truck with the hull of an M113 (http://news.webshots.com/album/92508045vVhFUA)? It was called the Alabama Slammer.

Of course there were the gun trucks created during the Vietnam conflict that had an M113 APC in the cargo bed of the truck but the above turns the M113 into the body of the vehicle and it looks like an easy conversion with the kits currently available.

'Technically' armed trucks pre-date WWI and many of the early armored cars were nothing more than
an armored body on a standard heavy saloon car or truck chassis, so the subject is wide open.  ;D

are to the early days of wheeled armor.

Afghanistan .... a Scud missile is launched but falls back causing much damage to the Maz launch-vehicle.  The crew are told to join an infantry unit but decide to do the relatively minor repairs to the still largely complete vehicle & convert it into a Gun-Truck ..... (possible future project ;) )

On something that big, I'd want something a little heavier than a 14.5mm.  Perhaps a 73mm from a BMP-1?  Loads of interesting places you've put those 12.7mm DShKs.  ;D

An article I read about it said they builders were considering using an M900 series truck instead of an M800 series for more power and more electrical power to run a minigun. I bought the kits for this and just haven't started it yet.

The IDF had lots of these running around between 1948-1950.  Anything and everything was pretty much used as a base vehicle.  I am currently working on one based on the M3A1 Scout Car.

I can't help wondering how they changed the whole drive train of that jeep. Or did they just drive it around in reverse all the time?
All that armor plate and three man crew must have maxed out the weight limit.

I think you can see how over-weight it is by how far down the springs are compressed on the "front" suspension.

I wonder how much armour it could carry?  No more than 5mm, I'd guess.

As to the drivetrain, I suspect they simply placed the front axle on the "front" and the rear axle on the "rear".  The transfer case is in the middle on the original Jeep IIRC so the engine would simply drive the gear box and then the transfer case.  They'd have to then reverse the seats and put the steering wheel and box at the "front".

It is a well thought out design and must have taken some time to build but I don't see it beyond a well-equipped base workshop's capabilities.   The 57mm Rcl is a bit over the top though...

When searching use Image search and the terms improvised armoured ............... will give the most 'interesting' results.

Mining dump trucks are already a 1:1 reality, or if you would prefer a front-end loader:

Mining dump trucks are already a 1:1 reality, or if you would prefer a front-end loader:

I dove one of these 100 ton trucks in the Iron Ore mines Mount Newman Western Australia for a couple of weeks back in the early 90's - An eye opening experience!

Add a dozer/mine plough arrangement at the front (the solid wheels would translate any AT mines blast right through the vehicle - trust me, you don't want to be changing one of these tires in the field!  ;)
The bucket on the back would afford much armoured protection - divide into compartments for POL, water, food, and ammo;
a 120mm mortar on a 360-degree turntable - to reach out and touch somebody;
at least one ZU-23-2 23mm gun mount for anti-aircraft and engagement of high elevation targets;
a couple of Mk 19 40mm grenade launcher for close protection ;
four banks of smoke/grenade discharges - you don't want enemy infantry/rebels getting under or on this thing!.....

Ha, in hindsight, carting iron ore seems very boring now  ::)

And just think what you could do with the 200 ton 6x6 variant  :P

I was just looking.  The BelAZ 75710 shown below can carry a 450 metric tonne load!!! :o

Talk about yer ultimate zombie apocalypse vehicle!

I worked in an open pit mine for a semester in the late 70s. We had 120t and 170t trucks. They repeatedly warned everyone who drove in the pit to never, ever, for any reason, stop or park or stand to the right of a haul truck. The nearest thing they could see to that side was 250 yards away. Yet, pretty much once a year, someone parked to the right of a truck with disastrous results. In the 10 years the mine had been open at that point there had been 11 incidents where a haul truck rolled over a pick-up truck (usually Ford F-150 crew cabs) and not once, ever, had the driver of the haul truck known he had driven over someone or even felt the bump as anything different than the bumpy bottom of the pit.

A very instructive work term, to be sure.

The big dump trucks look like something you could scaleorama using a big-scale dump truck (maybe a toy) and a small-scale cab, ladders and details.

Not quite a battleship turret but flogged off a minesweeper (AK-230)  :D (attachment)
Kits are available for almost all the Belaz mining truck range @ 43rd scale (most common diecast vehicle scale) however be prepared to sacrifice your firstborn to pay for it  :icon_crap:

That looks a bit like something I have planned (and indeed have the kits for).  Basically replace the 40mm gun on this:

With this:

And thus create a truck mounted rapidly moved tank destroyer type thing.

If I was the shop yard OIC, I'd suggest putting the 17pdr in a 25lbr cradle (aka Pheasant) and 360 turn table. Lose the wheels, crimp the legs so they can lock down on the edges of the turntable and you'd get 270 degrees pretty fast. Just be mindful of rollover recoil at 9 and 3 o'clock.
