Title: Armed Launch 1795-1865 (1/96th-100th/15mm)
Post by: Story on December 31, 2016, 05:18:56 AM
Figured I'd fiddle with the 32' cutter from Revell's USS CONSTITUTION kit and work it up as one of those armed launches frequently tasked with picket boat duties or raiding, from the Barbary coast to the Confederate waters.

Here's one during a Mexican War adventure

Most seem to sport a lanteen rig (http://i.imgur.com/7uc1206.png) but there's a reverse rig that suit a bow gun better. (http://i.imgur.com/C0nUTAI.jpg)

So here's what we have to mess with (http://i.imgur.com/etndznw.jpg)

An upper and lower hull seemed to be the best way to divide the work. Crates and barrels salvaged courtesy of an RE Lee riverboat that had it's deck chopped. (http://i.imgur.com/jZwy3JC.jpg)(http://i.imgur.com/08qJVYQ.jpg)

I'd been thinking a sweep oar for a rudder, but the tiny boatswain probably wouldn't like that (http://i.imgur.com/frOFP0u.jpg)

I especially like how the oars are crossed like that.

Looking good!

Looks good, especially on the log. You could probably sell it in a New England/nautical antique shop.

I know of what you speak. Wouldn't it be hilarious if we'd passed within arm's reach in those same places. <insert seagull noises>

Nice model

Have often though of those punt-guns ... 10-foot barrels on a skiff ... replace the seagulls with ducks ;D
