Consolidated PBY Catalina Ideas and Inspiration
« on: January 08, 2012, 03:36:51 AM »
Hi folks,

A thread for your Consolidated PBY Catalina Ideas and Inspiration.

I can't really help here - the Cat' is probably one of my all time favourite aircraft and I simply can't see how it could be perfected...apart from my owning a real one...which almost happened...and may yet again...

Regards,

Greg

Replacing the recip engines with over wings jets? Or doubling up the engines to 4?

Adding a proper 2-4 gun power turret in the nose.
Replacing the 2 aft blisters with a single 2-4 gun turret
Adding a proper 4 gun power turret over the FE's position

Adding a twin tail which has a tail gunners position like the B-25H or J.

Some type of AWACs radar over the center wing? Not that more drag is required to slow it down.

Of course it would have to be a PBV-2 made by Canadian Vickers of Montreal
 ;)

Triple turbines, also arranged in that distinctive far-too-close-together look of the twin radials.    Outer engines rotate opposite each other.

The "Cat" is iconic in that the fuselage is literally a sculpture. About the only straight lines on it are the cockpit windows. Only the SR-71 or the Martin lifting bodies has this level of curvatures comparable of this 1930's era parasol wing flying boat.

So any whif must not violate the fuselage in any manner unless expanding its dimensions overall or proportionally shrinking it.

This just leaves the wing and the engines in play. Maybe go with a swept wing lowered to the shoulder position, with the flight engineer having to move out of his loft office , and a pair of jets atop the wing like on the Seamaster or the Beriev-10. Swept for the tail planes as well, not a dramatic sweep, maybe 25 or 30 degrees for wings and tailplanes are almost there as they were!

The keys to the cat is "less is more" as far as redesign.

Beyond this idea, bring in Tophe, yell "Catamaran!" and watch the magic... !

How about going the Do-26 route with push-pull engines or the Do-24 route with three piston or turboprops?

Interesting topic and posts.  Have built 1/48 Catalina got out of a garage.  Leaving it mostly intact, plan to do mods which make it 1/72.

So, in that new Unflown Wings: Unbuilt Soviet/Russian Aircraft Projects Since 1925 book that I bought recently, there's a neat image of a Soviet GST (license-built Catalina) with two Polikarpov I-15bis aircraft attached to the top wing.

It looked like something out of Talespin to me.

Anyway, it was a neat idea that I'd never heard of, so I thought I'd share it for inspiration here.

Cheers,

Logan

The first volunme of Convair Secret Projects has some intereting civil derivative studies for the basic PBY design.

Steward-Davis also offered their Jet-Packs, you know them from the S-D C-82 and C-119 conversions, for their Super Catalina conversion. One to three could be fitted.
Three J3402 packs on the R-2600 powered Super Cat would definitely add some grunt.  ;D

Hi team,
Another angle on the Avalon proposal:

From "PBY: The Catalina Flying Boat" by Roscoe Creed. Info from that book: "For some Cansos the future may hold a different look and a different sound. Avalon Aviation is considering planes to replace the reciprocating engines of its Cansos with Rolls Royce Dart turboprop engines, creating a "Turbo Cat" that would outperform even the Super Cats. Because the planes are based on land and scoop their loads from fresh water lakes and rivers, none of the corrosion problems attendant on turbine-powered seaplanes which operated on salt water after the war would be likely."

And a model build of it at another forum I frequent: http://rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/22460/turbine-dart-engined-canso-catalina

It certainly has my mind working!

I had the idea of putting a Japanese mavis wing on a catalina, 4 engines as well. Kind of a preview there
