Petlyakov-Myasishchev PeM-2
« on: March 29, 2017, 02:45:59 AM »
I am anxiously awaiting the rules for this GB, but I am pretty sure this idea will be within the rules.

This will be an ultra-long range development of the Pe-2 featuring a trimotor layout and possibly an extended fuselage (although that will be a challenge with the Pe-2's smooth curves).  Anyway, looking forward to the GB start!

Pe-2 featuring a trimotor layout
Where will be the third engine? I hope it is a pusher, either in the tail or asymmetrically behind the port tractor engine (or else: starboard)... ;)

Sorry, Tophe, I am planning a "boring" nose installation for the third engine.

The starting point for my PeM-2 build is this HobbyBoss 1/72 Pe-2. I have another on the way to donate the third engine.
PeM-2 by cacree, on Flickr

I have commented favorably before on HobbyBoss Easy Assembly kits for WHIF fodder, but this one has some serious drawbacks.  The first one is the dorsal window/ gun position. It is molded in as part of the upper fuselage. PeM-2-2 by cacree, on Flickr
Secondly, the overall level of detail is lower than most such kits, especially in the engine nacelles. PeM-2-3 by cacree, on Flickr

I will try to overcome these in my PeM-2 build.

From 2 kits (2+2 engines), you could build 4+0: a push-pull and a glider, or 3+1: your PeM-2 + an asymmetric single-engined one...

Well, the more I work on this, the more I bemoan the lack of detail and general plastic-blobbery of this kit.  But I soldier on.
Here are the extended wingtips of the PeM-2 intended to give better altitude performance...
PeM-2-4 by cacree, on Flickr
PeM-2-4 by cacree, on Flickr
I have pretty much given up on the hope of extending the fuselage.  The only logical place to put a plug (the point of maximum fuselage diameter) is at about the point of the wing main spar.  The way the kit is engineer, this would be a major, major undertaking of plastic surgery.  So, I think I'll pass.
The rest of my time has been spent cutting away plastic - from the floor of the dorsal turret, the main landing gear wells, and the dorsal hatch.  Still need to do the tailwheel well.

The wingtips look like Ju-188 wingtips.

The surface details on this kit really look blobby. Most of their Easy kits look far better. I noticed that they didn't open up the rear gunner's area or even provide glazing.

My second kit (third engine donor) arrived in the mail today, looking like this: PeM2-6 by cacree, on Flickr
Despite the look, the only damage was a broken off horizontal stabilizer that will be easily repaired.  And the instructions are actually pierced through along with the box!  PeM2-6 by cacree, on Flickr

I have completed opening up all the wheel wells (including the tailwheel).  I have to scratch tailwheel doors, since none are provided in the kit.  I also figured out a ventral bombing station made from a B-10 pilot's canopy, though that is not installed yet.  And I have scratched up a third, central fin.  Finally, I have made a glare shield and instrument panel for the cockpit - none provided.  Photos of all that later...

I am at that stage where I hesitate to do updates... but here goes....
Here is an over view of where I am at this point:  PeM-2-7 by cacree, on Flickr

The central unit of the triple vertical tail is fixed (no rudder): PeM-2-7 by cacree, on Flickr

Here is a closeup of the number two engine and its underslung radiator (you can also see the ventral bomb-aiming tub in the second shot): PeM-2-7 by cacree, on FlickrPeM-2-7 by cacree, on Flickr

It really transforms the look of the Pe-2, I think  ;)   Hope you like it!
