1/32 Revell F-16C

How it looked in June 2011 going for an F-35 look.

How it looks now. I am going for a MiG-23 look (Fell in love with the Flogger again)  :-\

Note new Dog Teeth and narrowed tail.

1/48 Foxbat Fin scratchbuilt base. Wrapped thin styrene around a bottle to create an exhaust tube for the engine. Not the piece of spine I am going to replace after I realized the F-16I like spine wouldn't work. (You can see it glue back on in the lower pics) Sometimes you just have a little too much Razor Saw Fun!  :icon_crap:

Scratchbuilt Horizontal Stabs traced onto styrene using the 1/32 Flogger's as a guide.

Spare sprue and Googley eyes added to make it look more like a K-36 seat... Right now it looks like an Ejection seat mascot of some sort!!  ;)

Mock up, Note the styrene strips added to the F-110  O0 Parapack is a cut down Sparrow Missile

Exhaust Ring (?) I forget what they are called  ;D

Tail Mock up

working on this for the Hanger Queen GB, Because I have a lot of Hanger queens but this one is the worst by far.  :icon_swat:

Neat idea! It almost looks like some recent fighter lightweight developments from both the PRC and Taiwan - the Chungkou designs.

But yours has a more advanced look to it, even though borrowing older tech!

Thanks for the Comments!

This is going to be a three foot model. But I plan on doing a few things to make it look a tad better:

1. It has no cockpit, so a nice pilot Figure will help distract from that

2. I don't want to rescribe the entire model so I am going to keep that to a minimum and add surface detail instead. small scoops and plates and what not.

3. An excellent paint scheme. Still have decided what yet, but I know it has to be good.

Very nice so far, looks like a F-16 and a MiG-23 shared a wild weekend somewhere with this as the resulting "progeny".  Just a thought, how about re-doing the inlet along the lines of the Ye-8's inlet?  Alternatively, a swept 2-D inlet with the forward-most edge on the bottom, allowing the variable ramp to be in a more accessible location on the finished aircraft (I've worked that area of the F-16, you don't want to try fitting ramp actuators in with the ammo drum and feed for the M61 - besides, this way everything moveable is in the same subsection of the aircraft).

That is a great suggestion, and under any normal circumstances I would take it. But this is a model I bought in 1995, and started working on in 2004. I entered it into the Hanger Queen II GB on Aeroscale because although I do have other models that are closer to completion, 8 years is the worst and oldest queen I have. In 8 years this thing has been An Isreali F-16C, Israeli F-16A, Space Fighter, Aggressor, WWII plane, Soviet like F-35 and finally a Soviet like Mig-23. Lost the intake, and had to borrow one from the academy kit. Ripped out the cockpit at one point to redo it. lost the landing gear, intake lip, canopy (twice and once for good) Its been in development hell. I even worry now that if I don't keep working on it, I will lose focus have a change of mind and begin the whole process again  :-\

Hope to get more pics posted today. I really want to make progress on this after work today.

LOL is that good thing?  ;)

I was originally planning to put this on the Armorama What If GB but it fell well behind schedule, and I didn't even post a single pic!  :-\ I love the T-80 and T-64 and the Abrams of course so this is a natural for me. My backstory is that a frustrated Soviet tank designer looks at the new American Abrams and the old T-34 and realizes that the Russians have moved too far away from their roots of sloped armor. So a with a little copying (borrowing ;)) Of the Abrams style with soviet design results in the T-83:

this is supposed to represent an early version of the T-83, with new Kontakt 5 Reactive armor and side skirts retrofitted. The majority of Russian pieces are from a DML T-80U kit I got when I was 11(!) and has been scrapped along with removing the paint for spares. T-64 road wheels, sanded and adjusted to fit the abrams hull (All 28 of them  :banghead: ) T-64 Kontakt 5 from SP Designs. There are some Challenger and T-72 pieces there as well too.
Still a lot of work to do, but maybe I can be inspired to return to it.

As always I am in the "Too Many Models, Too Little Time phase" But I am making progress on things!

Added Airbrakes/scoops Glued in the Stabs and Fin base with Epoxy. Got the Engine Tube in there too. I was actaully smart for once and I am keeping the nice metallic exhaust seperate until after I have painted the camo. Still have surface detail to add but good progress!

I cracked the canopy about a month ago which brought construction to a screeching and disappointing halt. Luckily Don G on ARC was nice enough to send me a replacement FREE! But what to do with the  cracked canopy?

Looks like the cockpit is a bit cramped with the crew sitting side by side as you have in the images.  Maybe better to stagger them just a little with the pilot further forward and the WSO/Nav set back a bit with an extension on the instrument panel to support the new location.  Or you could lower the WSO/Nav a little as was done in the A-6 Intruder.

Thanks everyone!  :) Means a ton!

This is a 1/100 scale Tomcat I put in Israeli colors to see how it looked. I didn't have Israeli decals though so I happily left it on the shelf like that for years.  But, one of my goals is to have "as many Red Stars in my collection as Ken Duffey" Thats a pretty lofty goal and he has a big head start. So I decided to add some red stars to this. I love the Idea of Russian Tomcats but I usually alter them to make them look the part a little more. First time I have made an OOB Eastern Tomcat. Its just one of my quirks, I guess I like to alter them a little or a lot first, so this kind of threw me... Whats the back story? I do like this though. Looks sun faded and well used I think.

Backstory- Howzabout -----Iran swaps their f-14's for Mig-27's with Russia in 84' during the Iran Iraq war. The Cats' are reverse engineered as the superfortress was all those years before and built in Czechoslovakia under Mikoyan contract. The Varyag class carriers operated the Mig 26 "Kochka" until 2008 when replaced with Su-37's. The duplicates are offered for sale and ironically, get snapped up by Iran.

Rambling thoughts........
Like to try that using 1/144 B-52 built as 1/72 with under wing Maverick's
Maybe a 1/72 B-25 or B-66 nose will fit, have to check it out.  Giving definitive 1/72 scale.  Perhaps tandom B-47, B-57, F-101 style cockpit & canopy.
Could B-52 nacelles be modified to pass as two of some smaller engine?  What engine?
Use four B-66 engines?  While raiding B-66 kit use its tail gun.
Option to open up bombay and stuff it with what you want.

IL- 23 Kamchatka, 1981

Supposed to be one of those quick builds that got put on the back burner for years  :-\ Scratchbuilt fins, Used a Canopy from a 1/72 Ah-1W, Mig-29 nose radome and front Gear, scratchbuilt doors Airfix GR kit originally.

I tried to Airbrush it in a Gekko scheme but my Airbrush was having none of it and I had to resort to rattle bombs and a different camo pattern. Even then it still didn't cover the airbrushing mistakes so I brush painted the Light Blue... still peaks out here and there for the keen eyes among us.

Overall I think it looks cute  ;D

Myasishchev BOUNCER Eastern Kazakhstan 1995

I always wondered what a B-2 would look like in SIOP scheme... Then I threw red stars on it!  >:D An afternoon of spray painting because Testors makes SIOP colors in rattle bombs. I used a previously built B-2. Had fun! Though I probably rushed the masks a tad as the paint has some texturing to it in some areas.

Based off this very interesting B-52 with additional black added to it:

Mikoyan Mig-26 FROGMOUTH San Antonio AFB, Cuba 1993

Another look at the "Kuban Krokodile" scheme.

Aggressive pilot (Got very used to the reclined look of the F-16, Really looks different)

"Viper" front

"Crocodile" rear

Underside

Underside detail

Detail of Louvres shown closed, they open on the ground when Intake Doors close to guard against FOD.

Shown banking for all you intrepid Photoshoppers out there...

Closer

Demarcation line, scoops, and 'brakes.

Front

Until next time.  O0

After 8 years in the making its finished! The last model I build before I move to San Antonio, TX this Wednesday morning. Researching the Soviets in Cuba I discovered there is a based named San Antonio:

San-Antonio AFB. April 17, 1963. Photo by Victor Sharkov

So naturally thats where this beauty is based!  ;D Cool coincidence!

Colors are

50's aqua, Euro I Gray, RLM 75 Grauviolet, and Acft. int. black. outlined with Ink. Very thrilled with this one :-*

Love your model. Just beautiful.

By the way, in Spanish 'Frog mouth' can be used as a synonym of 'Big mouth': a person that speaks too much and says what he/she should'nt. Is in English the same?

Lavochkin La-300, Sudan 1961. (after brief refueling stops in Azerbaijan, Iraq, Syria, And Egypt   ;))

1/100 EE lightning scale o ramaed to 1/72 with a Mig-17UTI canopy and this fellow:

The first two colors went on great, the black spattered which was unfortunate because I really couldn't redo the black without having to redo everything else. The top stabilizer broke off after painting and has been lost ever since  :banghead: Still hoping it will turn up but after a week it was time to post this already!

What inspired it:

The profile gekko posted only a couple days after I painted it!:

From the Shelf Queen GB on ARC:

Update:

Su-27 Exhausts

Canopy masked to look Russian like. Used twin seat Sukhoi Su-22s and MiG-23 for ideas.

Underside painted a gray who's name escapes me.

The joys of removing gross nasty masking tape that was applied about 5 years ago.

Dk Green on Top, with a rattle bomb. After that I painted by hand Euro I Green, Military Brown and Finally an off black I mixed on the spot. So I stepped back to admire my handiwork and...

I didn't like it.  :( There are way too many cool schemes out there. More cool schemes than I have models in the stash (and I have A LOT of models in the stash.) plus it looked way tooo similiar to the Tomcat above! So even though this thing has been a shelf queen for a long time, and the finish line is in sight, I'm going back to the drawing board. More updates to come.

Sat down with SWMBO and we looked at some of the excellent profiles from Richard Chafer

Decided on this one

http://studiogekko.blogspot.com/

Its also helpful because I probably couldn't replicate that masking job on the Canopy, so this one had Dk. Green.

Jade Green rattle bomb.

Masked with silly putty

White went on well enough. I went a little heavier on the nose and tailfin with the idea that they would be dielectric panels but it caused some issues some cracking on the nose and bad stuff on a fin:

Wow what a mess!! Silly putty and tape to save on scarce silly putty

Much better!

Euro I Gray Radome. I couldn't do white, and I needed to pick a different gray from the underside.

By pure coincidence they even matched up! didn't even try!   ;D

Last shot on a freshly cleaned work bench.

Much happier with this.  :) :)
