Title: McDonnell F2H-5 Banshee Swept wing
Post by: The Big Gimper on August 02, 2015, 09:21:43 PM
Folks:

Here are some WIP photos of my F2H-5 swept wing Banshee. The Banshee is the old 1/72 Airfix kit. I was going to sell it but it got a stay of execution. I could have used F-86 wings but to stay within the reality of the early navy birds, I went with a look similar to the F9F Cougar.

The wings and horizontal stabs are from the Hasegawa Fuji T-1. Of all the wing surgery I have done to date, this has been so far the easiest cut and attach. The chord depth and thickness were really close. A nice blend of the leading edges.

I will use the T-1 landing gear which will provide more ground clearance.

Sorry for the shadows. It is 9 AM.

Very nice, sort of a fall back option should the Demon fail?

Proper next step, is what your F2H-5 should/would be :)
Is a kitbasher's treat when parts are a near match.  F-94E and Dauntless II wings were that way.
Fuji T-1 wings look 25-30 degree sweep where F-86 is 35 degrees.
Interesting you chose T-1 wings.  Their sweep looks correct and unique.
Swept wings bump up critical Mach !

Couple F-5E J-85 wet engines otta fit.

Waiting for progress pics.

Mid-build Update:

Most of the painting is done. Xtracrylix Gloss Sea Blue via hairy stick. Will coat with future at the end.
Canopy still needs to be done. Ditto for other areas which are not GSB.
Drop tanks need to be painted and attached.

Watching the various small business jets that take off from YYC (where I work), I noticed that one type has a wing and complete tail unit which resemble the Banshee ones (minus the inboard air intake section), even has it's main u/c looking the same (another type has wings that really look like F-80 or T-33 wings)

Looking good Carl!  A shame you did not opt for the RCN scheme used on the Banshee before it was retired.

Ah Dr. Fontaine, but I do have plan to do this again with a F2H-3 and with RCN colours. Once I source another cheap T-1, the surgery will begin.

Looks the part.  Last of the Banshee versions.  USN sold to Argentine Navy around 1960 and serving into the 70s.
Deserves being photo shopped on deck or flying over an Argentine aircraft carrier.
Another fine build  :)

Okay Folks. I'm calling my Argentinian Armada Banshee build done. Thanks for all your comments. And due to popular demand there will be a F2H-6 (F2H-4) in RCN colours.
