Looky that !  ---  P-38ish similarity Saucer jet.  Cover could be inspiration for (now cancelled) Boeing ABL.
Doing last of parts fabrication, jet exhaust.  When thatz done can start final assembly.

Thanks for this discovery. I have invented the missing links with actual P-38...

Not to derail Bill's thread, but a "Voyage to the bottom of the Sea" flying sub can donate the wings for the P-38 variant; there's a 1/128 kit that may be big enough for a 1.72 build.

There's also the 1/48 Martian ship from "War of the Worlds", but that would require difficult surgery through very slick plastic.

Tophe - what software do you use to make your isometric drawings? All three look good.

I use Corel Draw Home X7 vectorial drawing software, and I created trigonometric calculations to build a slanting view from a 3-view drawing.
Anyway, drawing is easy but building this saucer "for real" (in plastic, not metal though) is the true challenge... ;)

Progress pictures.
Wing spar from sprue for wing support.  First pass at nose & intake putty is done.
Look is taking shape.  Canopy needs solid treatment.
Next:  wings > tails > exhaust > landing gear.

IF you're still unhappy with the look (too turtle-ish) you could add horizontal chines at the hull centreline that fair into the sides of the P-38 pod and then blend them in with Aves. That would extend the saucer shape and reduce the "neck" of the turtle look. Something starting about the inside or outside edges of the inlets and then fairing in a curve to the sides of the pod.

Just a thought.

Like where this is going.

I for one welcome our new turtlejet overlords. I'm envisaging a squad of four based in New York, wearing names...those of a certain age will understand :smiley:

Thanks all.
Used three types putty.  Finding Vallejo 70.401 working best as final thinner coat.  At certain point will stop filling & sanding, call it good enough.  I build for the concept more than perfect finish.
Perceptive suggestion tankmodeler. :smiley:   Probably leave as is so can finish and move on to next build.

I like how the intakes flow towards the fins. The overall look is great!

Does it say anything about me that I would have put the front fins a bit further around towards the front & made them about 3/4 the size, then put a second set of fins further back, about 1/2 the size of the front fins & angled down at about 15o? ???

Hmmm,,,  Move wings forward and add down angled (kinda like Phantom) rear fins ?
Does say you are up to more work than me.

Wings are on, tails are on, and just got primed.    See attachments.
Now,,, what the heck color scheme to use ?

The images should explain why this ray came to mind for this build (the last especially).

Southern Eagle Ray;

White Spotted Eagle Ray;

Ornate Eagle Ray;

Something simpler (still an Eagle Ray);

Spotted Eagle Ray underside (most Eagle Rays are mostly white underneath);

Wow this just gets better with every update, fins!

My vote is for the Turtleplane but I like turtles. Something about carrying one's house with them is very appealing.

Looking forward to more,

Man Ray

This build is looking really fine. Much as I like the colors on the rays, I think this one needs a classic red, black and yellow from
a '30s cover of Modern Mechanics...
