Give me our simple, 2-tiered system any day! :)

It has it's advantages.  You should though, always remember why the Federal Police (ex Commonwealth Police) were formed by the Little Digger - someone threw an egg at him during the 1916 Conscription Referendum campaign and the local Queensland (I think it was) Police stood by and laughed at him!  I could see it being repeated today.  ;)

JCF, care to explain all the odd, Federal US departments and other organisations like the Congress/Senate that have their own private police forces?  I've never understood the duplication and interacting jurisdictions and why they felt a need for them when there were existing local police forces.

Simple, the US has local, state and federal laws and depending on what is at issue local can trump state
or vice versa, state can trump federal or vice versa, the cases where federal trumps local or state are specific and defined.
 ;D

Note that none of the federal level law enforcement arms are 'private police forces' all are public entities
and the reason they exist is the need to operate independently of local politics and concerns. Also some
things are of national concern and too big for local forces.

What you need to remember is that the US is large and diverse in terms of geography, population and politics and what works in rural Georgia won't necessarily work in urban Washington State.

“Conspiracy theory’s got to be simple.
Sense doesn’t come into it. People are
more scared of how complicated shit
actually is than they ever are about
whatever’s supposed to be behind the
conspiracy.”

You could, quite easily, argue the same for Australia (although we have a much smaller overall population, it is equally diverse to that of the US).

Note that none of the federal level law enforcement arms are 'private police forces' all are public entities
and the reason they exist is the need to operate independently of local politics and concerns. Also some
things are of national concern and too big for local forces.

None of Australia's police forces/departments are "private", all are government entities created under State & Federal legislation. They are answerable only to the courts for their law enforcement activities, although the government controls the purse strings & can conduct "performance reviews", & initiate Royal Commissions to investigate & review police activities, policies & procedures (external & "independent" as opposed to internal investigations & reviews) but these may only make recommendations which the police are not obliged to accept unless the courts also recommend said changes...

Hmm! ???

I think I've dragged this thread far enough away from its intended purpose. :icon_crap:

I'll shut up now. :-[

It will be interesting to see what Australian Police forces end up driving once Ford and Holden stop building large rear wheel drive cars.

When the Finnish police feel the need for a little armor on a vehicle, they borrow some from the military. If they have time, they'll put a police sticker on it.

That looks COOOOLLLLLDDDD!  Is that why it's going at such a clip?  If it went slower it would stall and the tracks would get stuck to the road?  ;D

Saw an OD unmarked one of those on my street by my house in Jacksonville last month. They're more intimidating (to me) in just plain matte OD. I actually think it might've been US Customs and Border Protection or Homeland Security rather than local SWAT/Police, though.

Cheers,

Logan

Audi RS4 police car hits Sydney

The force is definitely with Sydney Police, as a German V8 super-wagon is drafted into duty.

To glance in your rear-view mirror and see an ominous set of flashing blue and red lights is always a heart-in-mouth moment; to see them attached to the aggressive, wide-stance, front end of an Audi RS4 Avant could see you momentarily perplexed, as if you’ve shifted through the time-space continuum into some strange German-occupied parallel universe.

Complete story here.

Dunno about the "force" but the "cash" must certainly be with them if they're buying Audi's. ???

Are you seeing larger fines for moving traffic violations? Larger service fees?

Not just for law enforcement vehicles, there are some municipalities in the US that have significant portions of their budget down as being covered by fines and fees.  I've seen an article that one of the reasons the folk of Ferguson, MO were none too trusting of the police is because that town's budget counts on fines and fees for 25% of the budget.  That does NOT excuse what happened there but it does explain some attitudes going in.
