Title: Turreted guns on aircraft

OV-10D NOGS

These make me wonder about the installation of trainable gun turrets on moderate to high-performance aircraft: When are they practicable?

On the one hand we have the OV- type of aircraft which carry the external gun turret; and on the other a jet bomber which I presume can deploy the internal gun turret in a very narrow region of the flight envelope.

Oh, and let's not forget the P-61 Black Widow and Boulton-Paul Defiant

I have a couple of Naval USMC/RM what ifs, both propeller driven, and I would like to have them equipped that way.

Thanks beforehand for any explanation,

Rafa

That ATK Mohawk with the 30mm Bushmaster mounted on the belly looks interesting.  That could be easily built by kit bashing the needed parts from an AH-64 Apache with the Mohawk in 1/72nd and 1/48th scale.  The Roden 1/48th scale OV-1D Mohawk kit does come with rocket pods, fuel tanks, and gun pods, so leaving the APS-94 SLAR antenna off and arming the thing would not be much of a problem.

I was considering or is that pondering arming the Monogram 1/48th scale C-47 with a belly mounted 20mm turret from the AH-1 Cobra and putting the fire control sensors somewhere on the kit (yet to be determined).

A couple of years ago I picked up a kit of the OV10D NOG in 1/72 scale, I think it was of the prototype of the concept though as it doesn't have that elongated nose shown in the picture.

I would like to know if it is possible for a small airplane like AT-6, Tucano, PC-7/9 and the likes to sport a turreted gun for CAS, given a small enough turret installation.

I have two of these MPC kits. I compared the fuselage length to my Academy OV-10D and they are pretty close.

I want to add 2-3 pylons per wing and mount some LAU-59As and LAU-11/A Gun Pods. AV-10D anyone?

Well anything is possible.  Moreover, with today's advanced guidance/targeting systems you could probably easily have it cued to a helmet mounted sight.  I would perhaps take one of the twin seat trainers you have suggested and remove the rear seat replacing it with the turret and gun system and associated components.  This not only would provide appropriate space but would also help to maintain the weight and balance of the aircraft.   Hmmm...I just got an excuse to buy a 1/48 IBEX Beechcraft T-6 Texan II... :)

And just for that, I might do it up in Venezuelan markings >:D

Title: H.A.L.F., and Lysander
Post by: sequoiaranger on March 26, 2012, 10:51:02 PM
First off, the turreted Lysander I remember, and that was the inspiration for my "Avro Avatar"...

was a real-world "beach-strafer" project with a four-gun turret in the extreme tail, with a special twin-rudder setup (much like the a** end of a Lancaster). Picture my Avatar with a tail-turret--the front end of such a Lysander would put the Lysander's propeller at about the top turret--it really was a "stubby" li'l sucker!

But I also made a whif of front-moveable guns on a "High Altitude Long-range Fighter" so that if the large plane could not quite turn with an adversary in front of it, its guns COULD!

PS--the "HALF" designation was because it used a half-scale B-29 test-bed for this "decoy" fighter (a LOT more backstory, but you get the idea?). Scale-o-rama-ed 1/144 B-29 for the 1/72 "HALF".

The Avator is awesome.

As for the HALF, it is SOOOO cute. I want to take one home and cuddle it.  :-)

Great job Craig.

Truely like both of these.  Since I bash all scales to end up 1/72 the HALF same kind of bash I had in mind for same kit thatz in the stash.
Guns and cockpit are from IL-28 ?      :)

Yup. Pilot, too! Looking at that close-up pic, I see that the "turret" in front appears "welded in" to the nose, instead of moveable as I had envisioned. I may have to run a fine pen line around the ball so that it truly appears tp be a separate part.

Right - does appear guns go up-down but no turret rotation.
I really like this P-29 type fighter.  Inspiration for two flavors of 1/72 bash that came to mind on that kit.
