Hi, nice to meet you all!

My name is João Einon and I´m an Afol (Adult Fan of LEGO). I live in Portugal and I use LEGO bricks to build aircraft and warships (mostly What-ifs).
First I build the aircraft, then I create images of what they might have been in the real life.

Welcome Eínon !

As a flying wing/tailless fan, definitely give the highest marks on the Red-Wing.

Legos could be a great way to prototype ideas for all kinds of craft.

Ideas and tips: When using PS or other painter tools to create contrails and vortexes or smokes, use a soft brush setting, or an airbrush setting and go for a 5-8 percent fill or put them on a new layer with lowered transparency. The ones on the Red Wing are just right for depth. Also can use the line tool (thick) on a light transparency layer , rasterize it and then gauss blur it or hand blur. The backdrops are superb, the Mostrengo's especially.

Great to have you join and show what can be done with Lego.  Can see fiddling with it to visualize bash concepts before slicing & dicing styrene.  Anyone here used Lego to build basic structure of airplane then go on to use fillers and parts from kits to complete the build?
Having never even put two Lego pieces together, I don't know if that approach is practical.  Looks like it might work based on what I see in the pictures.

G'day Einon

I for one loved Lego!!

I use to collect all the Space-series Lego as a kid!
Although they were depicted as peaceful application of space and planetary exploration, funnily enough I quickly adapted mine to military power projection  >:D
Peaceful Satellite launch rockets were modified to improve their throw weight, and their satellites were replaced by MIRV's!
Multi-wheeled Planetary exploration vehicles were modified to MICV's
Command and communications vehicles were quickly adapted to Self-Propelled SAM systems and battery command vehicles!

LEGO is an impressive way to build whifs. We can change colors, add or remove parts and we can "play" with the whifs in end.
Not that I still play with LEGO, I just build. ;D
I don´t paint LEGOs, but some of my friends do.

I made the same thing as you did! In fact, I start to build whifs after modifying some LEGO produts like you. But I used pirates and city cars, then I evolved to modern warfare.

Just a small question to everyone who had LEGOs, do you still have them?

Besides the planes, or ships, or tanks- I would imagine some pretty good hangars and hardened shelters and revetments can be done in LEGO for dioramas, and ship modelers could get some good docksides and drydocks/slipways out of the blocks.

Lets not forget too the SF modelers and LEGO space stations and orbital docks.

Yes, that makes sense.  Can see use in dioramas where they are unseen supporting hills and as foundation for steep hill sides and cliffs etc....

Still got all my LEGOs! Mostly from the late-1980s to mid-1990s.
And I still buy some of the new stuff. Bought a couple of the Anime-ish Exo-Force fighting mechs they had a couple of years ago. And something from the recent 1930-ish Egyptian Adventurer's theme (kinda inspired by Stephen Sommers' "Mummy" films).
At the moment there's this series of Collectable Minifigures that has some cool minifigures: A Spartan, a guy in a Godzilla suit, a gladiator, Frankenstein's monster, a Roman soldier (they should make this into a whole sub-theme), a Minotaur...

LEGO rocks! BIG TIME!

My next project is a 6 engine version of the Heinkel He-274 bomber.
I´m still working on the model.

The only problem is the name. Heinkel He-374 maybe?

I have also completed a small Junkers EF-128 in winter camouflage. Now I only need to produce the final pictures. ^^

Maybe with 4 auxiliary jet engines under the wings. Something like a German B-36, with a smaller bombload and longer range.

Before i start to work on the He-378, I built the He-274.

Heinkel He 274 A-3/R2
lego He-274 bomber with working engines

The story of the real He-274

Developed in substitution for the planned He-177 A-4 high-altitude bomber, the Heinkel He 274 might have been the perfect German WW2 Heavy bomber. Fitted with a pressure cabin, the aircraft was powered by four 1726Hp Daimler-Benz DB 603A-2 engines and featured a lengthened version of the He 177A-3 fuselage, with a new high-aspect-ratio wing and twin fins and rudders. Two prototypes were ordered in May 1943, together with four He 274A-0 pre-production examples, which were to have 1900Hp DB 603G engines. Despite an unsuccessful German attempt to destroy the almost-complete first prototype when they retreated from Paris in July 1944, the aircraft was finished by the French after the liberation and flown from Orleans-Bricy in December 1945 as the AAS 01 A. It was used later to test-fly models of such aircraft as the Aerocentre NC 270 and the Sud-Ouest SO 4000.

The significance of this design is that had this aircraft entered production and been used in operations over England it would have been impossible for Allied fighters to intercept over the target, owing to its extreme high altitude performance.

The model

Development:
In 1941, with the EUA entering the war against Germany, the Germans soon found that they needed a long-range bomber to strike the American cities and then return to the occupied France. They needed the “Amerika Bomber”. Various companies were developing heavy bomber designs at this time, many of them were large four-engine aircraft proposals that showed promise as heavy bombers, like the Fw 300 from Focke Wulf, the He-274 from Heinkel, the Ju-290 from Junkers, and the Me-264 from Messerschmitt AG. Since four engines might not have been enough to reach New York, there were also some six engines proposals, like the Ju-390, the Ta 400 and the “Me-264B”, all of them capable of strike the American cities easily.
But all of these projects were expensive and would have taken lots of time to develop and build. But the Heinkel Company soon developed the He 274 A-2, a 12000km long-range bomber, using many components from the previous He 274 design and capable of becoming operational in just a few months.
The new version was soon entering production, with the first bomber squadron operational in May 1944, just before D-Day. In June of that year, 10 He-274 flew to New York, dropping less than 10 000kg of bombs over the city.
The mission eventually failed its ultimate goal, to scare the American population. 4 He-274 were shoot down during the return voyage and 3 crash in the Azores. The remaining 3 landed in France, being destroyed by the British air force on the next day.
The He 274 A-2 was therefore a high altitude long-range bomber, capable of flying at more than 15 000 meters, with a loaded range of 12 000km. It featured a pressurized compartment for a crew of four, a pressure equivalent to that at 2,500 m (8,200 ft) being maintained at high altitude.
Armament:
Normal defensive armament for bomber versions comprised a forward, remotely operated "chin turret" under the extreme nose with twin 20mm MG-151/20 cannons, one dorsal turret armed with a pair of MG-151/20 cannon, a ventral turret for lower rearwards defence with another pair of MG-151/20 cannon, and a remotely controlled HL 151V tail turret with a quartet of MG-151/20 heavy machine guns or four 13,2mm MG-131 heavy machine guns.
For anti-ship missions, the A4/R2 version carried guided missiles or guided bombs like the Hs-293 and the Fritz-X under the wings. Also, the forward pair of MG-151/20 was replaced with two MK 103 30mm cannons to attack enemy ships.
Later, for anti-tank missions, Luftwaffe forward maintenance units modified a small number of He 274s, fitting a 75 mm Bordkanone BK 7,5 cannon within the aircraft's undernose Bola gondola, with the long barrel protruding well forward, beyond the glazed "fishbowl" nose.
The plane had two internal bomb bays, which could be transformed into a giant single bay, capable of carrying the largest bombs available in Germany. The maximum bomb load was 10 000kg, 6 000 kg internal and the rest external in up to four hard points under the wings. Guided bombs, torpedos and missiles could be operated from the bombardier position, using an array of controls and guiding systems. However for long-range missions, a 2 000-3 000kg was more common.

Power:
Initially the plane would have had 4 Daimler Benz DB 406C propeller engines producing 3,500hp each, but the development of these engines had stopped in 1942 under orders by the RLM. Since a new engine was needed to power the bomber, it was decided to use the new Daimler Benz DB 109-021RT, a 4,000hp shaft turboprop version of the Heinkel-Hirth HeS 109-011 jet engine, which delivered 1,100kg additional thrust. The new engine had some initial problems, but they were soon solved, and became extremely reliable. Since the He 274 dispensed the coupled engines used on the He-177, more room was provided for the installation of DVL exhaust driven TK 11B turbo-superchargers, one per engine, for better power output at high altitude. A conventional, simple and stronger landing gear was used instead of the complicated landing gear used on the He-177. Two auxiliary Junkers Jumo 004 jet engines were installed under the wings in small pods. The jet pods greatly improved takeoff performance and dash speed over the target however, in normal cruising flight, these engines were shut down to conserve fuel.

To compare: B-29 x He-274
In some ways, the new bomber was comparable to the Boeing B-29 being developed at the same time in America. Both were designed to flight at extremely high altitudes away from the enemy fighters, drop their bombs, and then return to their bases. However, the B-29 was a heavier and eventually much slower plane, it carried a smaller bomb load (9 000kg vs. 10 000kg) and with a shorter range (9 000km vs. 12 000km).
The He-274 had therefore a far higher power to ratio than the B-29, being much more faster.
The B-29 was also a much more complicated plane, prone in its early service years to catastrophic engine fires, electrical failures, and other costly malfunctions, sharing many similar problems with the first versions of the He-177. On the other hand, the He-274 was much more simpler, it used lots of proven components and was much more reliable, thanks to its separate engines.
General characteristics
Type: High Altitude Strategic Heavy bomber.

Performance:
Maximum speed (with jet engines): 710 km/h at 12,000 m.
Crusing Speed (no jets): 600km/h at 12,000m.
Range: 12,440 km;
Service ceiling: 15,200 m;

Thanks Brian da Basher.
I just love to build what-if and real planes. Now I´m waiting for the Easter holidays to start working on some projects.
Two years ago, I started a project, to build lot´s of German what-if warships. The idea was:
"The naval battle that never was... The Kriegsmarine fights the Royal Navy in the atlantic ocean"

Here we see two "Graf Zeppelin" escorted by two battleships of the "Maximiliam" class and two Prinz Eugen heavy cruisers.
A long-range, Heinkel He-274 escorts the carrier battlegroup.

A new project:
VL-DS-187 Gerifalte

VL-DS-187 Gerifalte
 www.flickr.com/photos/einon/

This is the main anti-ship attack aircraft of the Imperial Naval Aviation, its speed and agility at low altitude makes it a constant threat to opponent’s ships. The large aircraft has two powerful jet engines under the wings being able to achieve Mach 2, and also allowing the existence of a large internal bomb bay for twenty-four 1000kg bombs.

Externally, it has six hard-points, four capable of carrying D.D.N. anti-ship missiles and the other two capable of carrying 1 000kg of missiles, bombs or rockets. The aircraft also has a rear defensive 20mm Gatling gun turret and two 37mm guns in the front.

Nakajima Ki-125 "Washi"
Allied Code-name: Eddie

Please watch this and many other fantastic creations here: www.flickr.com/photos/einon/

A what-if mix of two different planes, the fuselage of the Fw-190D9 and the wings of the F4U Corsair.
Development: This plane is based on an aircraft that I saw in the Anime Konpeki no Kantai (紺碧の艦隊, lit. Deep Blue Fleet).
In one episode, we can see a plane, which looks like a mix of a Focke Wulf Ta-152 with the wings of the F4U Corsair and used by the Japanese between 1941 and 1943 (when it was replaced by jets). This fighter was much more powerful than anything the Americans or the Nazis had.

Nakajima Ki-125 Washi
Washi (鷲)- Eagle
Allied Code-name: Eddie
Factory: Nakajima Aircraft Company
Crew: 1
Engine: 1 × Nakajima Ha-45-41 Homare 27-cylinder radial engine (with a three-stage supercharger, intercoolers and C3 fuel)
Power (max): 2609 kW (3500 hp) at 3200 rpm at sea level;
2013 kW (2700 hp) at 3100 rpm at 9 000 meters;
Maximum speed: 812 Km/h at sea level, 730 Km/h at 9 000 meters;
Range: 3 000km
Service Ceiling: 13 500 meters;
Empty weight: 2,665 kg (5,875 lb)
Loaded weight: 3,616 kg (7,972 lb)
Armament:
2 × 13.2 mm (0.52 in) Type 3 machine guns over the engine;
Wings:
2 Type 99-2 model 5 20mm cannons or;
2 Type 5 30mm cannons (1,2”) or;
2 Ho-205 37mm anti-tank/bomber cannons.
Some versions also carried an extra pair of 13,2mm machine guns in the wings.
All rounds had a timer self-destruct and/or tracer (or glowtracer). There were also different types of high explosive shell fillings with a mixture called HA41 (RDX and aluminium), or a compressed version where more explosives were compressed into the same space using large pressures (XM).
This greatly increases terminal effects on the enemy aircraft.
Bomb-load: Max: 2300kg of bombs and rockets. Some aircraft could carry a 45 cm (17.7") Type 4 Mark 4 naval torpedo.

Related Aircraft:
Atlas: Giant Flying Aircraft carrier (in project…) – 4 operational airships;
In Greek Mythology, Atlas was the primordial Titan who supported the heavens.

Hesperides: Fire support Gunship / Ultra Heavy bomber – 13 operational airships;
In Greek Mythology, the Hesperides were nymphs (all daughters of the Titan Atlas) who protected the garden of the Hesperides and the Magic Golden Apples.

Hyades: Electronic Warfare Airship - 8 (airships capable to create a powerful electromagnetic shield (called R.A.I.N.) that prevents the enemy radar to detect these aircraft and its battle group).
In Greek mythology, the Hyades are a sisterhood of nymphs that bring rain.

Pleiades: Flying cargo/medical airship – 6 operational airships.
In Greek mythology, the Pleiades were seven sisters, all daughters of the Titan Atlas.

Story: The ENA C-1000 “Hesperides” Fire Support Gunship is an airship manufactured by ENA (Empresa Nacional de Armamento) for the Imperial Navy Aviation. As it's name suggests, it serves as the "combat arm" of the INA, providing fire support for the colossal “Atlas” flying aircraft carrier and the “Hyades” ESM airframes. It’s armed with onboard AAM launchers, AA guns and heavy long-range flak guns. The Hesperides are capable of carrying up to twenty 10 000kg bombs in an internal bomb bay. Its mainframe resembles that of the “Hyades”, although with lots of defensive guns. Despite its size, the “Hesperide” looks like it has higher maneuverability than a medium-heavy bomber and even certain aircraft. For example, it can fly 90º up thanks to its massive engines. The “Hesperide” is propelled by six high output engines, which allow the ship to achieve maximum speeds of Mach 1,4. Three of these engines are placed in each wing, arranged in a horizontal position. The plane can also fly with only two engines if necessary.

The aircraft is also known as being capable of emitting electronic countermeasures (ECM).Off course, this is an impossible aircraft. It’s based on the P-1114 “Gyges” Fire Support Platform of the game Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation.

Hope you like it!

VL-1200 Firestorm

Story
“I still remember that day ... It was a hot summer morning when I took off for a meteorological reconnaissance mission over the enemy positions, since a large bombing mission was scheduled for the night. My "Nemesis" fighter was flying without any external weapons, only the small internal cannon. Over the target, the sky was totally clean ... but from a distance, the radar pointed 5 "Strifer" fighters getting near of my position. I could not run away ...

After dodging a few missiles fired against me, I tried to get away, but they were always on my tail. When I felt that my end was near, a missile destroyed one of the “Strifer”. Looking at the side, I could see a "white bird" past me at a fantastic speed. In the fighting that followed, three "strifer"s were destroyed, thanks to that fighter.

When I returned to the base, I tried to find out who was the pilot who saved me. I met him (or rather, her) a week later, Captain Catherine Françoise, a 23 years old female ace pilot with 130 air victories. I talked to her and she praised me of how I managed to escape so much time to 5 "Strifer"s with an almost totally unarmed aircraft. We stayed in the bar, drinking a few beers and talking about fighter tactics.

…3 years later, we got married… ^_^

VL-1200 Firestorm - The plane

The Vila-Disparador VL-1200 (Reporting Name: “Firestorm”) is a supersonic, all-weather fighter-bomber aircraft developed in the Lego Empire. This variable-sweep wing, single engine single seater fighter was developed as a complement to the attack bomber “Gerifalte”.Initially, the aircraft should have been a high altitude reconnaissance and nuclear bomber. However, the aircraft had so much potential that was quickly modified for the fighter bomber role, equipped with hard points under the wings and 30mm cannons in the fuselage and tail.Despite being designated by the Imperial Air Force as a "heavy" fighter, the “Firestorm” was surprisingly agile for such a large aircraft, thanks to his powerful V-700A3 turbojet engine, capable of reaching Mach 3 at high altitude.
Given its original design as a supersonic recce and nuclear heavy attack aircraft, the Firestorm’s main armament was initially carried in an internal bomb bay, capable of carrying two conventional 2000kg bombs, two termo-nuclear bombs, or various free-fall nuclear weapons.The Firestorm defensive armament consisted of a tail turret above the engine, containing one 30mm ENA-75 cannon. The turret was directed by a small “Hindra” gun-laying radar to compensate for the pilot’s lack of rear visibility. Two forward firing 30mm cannons were also installed. Since it is so agile and able to reach high altitudes in seconds, it was also adapted for the function of interceptor. A powerful AESA radar and long range air-to-air missiles were installed for the role. A two-seat Wild Weasel version was later developed for the specialized Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) role against surface-to-air missile sites.The aircraft is used for ground attack missions, tactical bombing, anti-ship, Wild Weasel and interceptor.The first models were painted white to reflect nuclear explosions.

In many ways, it's similar to the F-105 Thunderchief, Sukhoi Su-24, General Dynamics F-111 and the Panavia Tornado.

My latest aircraft represents an llyushin IL-102 ground attack aircraft with some modifications in the armament, wings and systems. In the Imperial Lego Air Force, it’s known as the VL-1300 “Foxtiger”. I will later build the Soviet plane, with a different wing and Soviet Markings.

Please watch this and many other fantastic creations here: www.flickr.com/photos/einon/

VL-1300
The Vila Disparador VL-1300 (Reporting Name: "Foxtiger") is a single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft developed in the Lego Empire and designed to provide close air support for the Imperial Lego Ground Forces. The Foxtiger is designed to be refueled, rearmed, and serviced with minimal equipment. Also, most repairs can be done in the field. If runways are damaged in an attack, the plane can operate from taxiways, straight roadway sections or even grass fields. The Foxtiger is probably, the toughest aircraft in the world, being capable to survive direct hits from armor-piercing and high-explosive projectiles up to 40 mm. The crew cockpits, engines, fuel tanks and control systems are armored to protect against ground fire. The aircraft can operate almost all the light and medium ground attack armament used by the Imperial Lego Air Force and the “Aviação Naval Imperial” (Imperial Navy Aviation). Although not built to operate from aircraft carriers, the VL-1300 Foxtiger made a series of highly successful tests on board the Imperial Navy Aircraft Carriers. However, it failed to secure any orders from the navy.

IL-102 (from Wikipedia)

In 1967, the Soviet Air Forces drew up a specification for a jet-powered shturmovik or armoured ground attack aircraft. While Sukhoi designed an all-new single seat aircraft, the Su-25, Ilyushin proposed a modified version of their Il-40 of 1953 under the designation Il-42, which unlike the Sukhoi was a two seat aircraft with a remotely controlled rear gun turret. The design was rejected by the Soviet Air Forces, but Ilyushin decided to continue development as a private venture, renaming the programme Il-102.The Il-102 first prototype flew on 25 September 1982, with a second airframe built for static tests, and carried out 250 test flights until it was grounded in 1984 when the engine life expired.

The Il-102 was a low-winged monoplane with moderately swept (30 degrees) wings and powered by two Klimov RD-33I turbofans (non-afterburning versions of the engines that power the Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter).
 It was highly unusual for its time in having a rear gun turret, something not seen in ground attack aircraft since the World War II Il-2 Shturmovik and Il-10, the Il-102's spiritual ancestors, controlled remotely by a gunner sitting in a cockpit above the trailing edge of the wing. The crew cockpits, engines and fuel tanks were armoured to protect against ground fire.
Although development was abandoned in 1984, the prototype Il-102 was publicly unveiled at the 1992 Mosaeroshow air show at Zhukovsky, being claimed to be available for export. As of 2005, the prototype was mounted on a pedastal and was placed on display at the Gromov Flight Research Institute.

Kalstin aircraft carrier under attack

“Yesterday, we received orders from the Emperor himself to proceed to the enemy base of Valkan, a large naval base were a large convoy with almost 100 cargo ships was being prepared to depart, without any escorts. The escort ships were still one day away from the base. Our small battle group, one Kalstin aircraft carrier with (70 Stealth Thanatos Fighters), two anti-ship Destroyers of the Dana class and three Omicron’s nuclear attack submarines represented an impressive surface battle group.
We entered a small fiord near the enemy base and we started to prepare to launch all the Thanatos Stealth Fighters when suddenly, 120 enemy Striker fighters appeared in the sky. Immediately we launched all the fighters to intercept, while the Kalstin and the Dana’s started to fire AA missiles. Unfortunately, we couldn’t use the main guns or the Walstons CIWS, because our shells could hit our own fighters.
In the end, we shoot down 45 enemy Striker fighters while the others fled, all without a single aircraft loss on our side. Since the enemies on the Convoys knew that we where near, we launched immediately our air strike, with the help of the D.D.N. anti-ship missiles fired by the two Dana’s Destroyers and the Omicron’s submarines, guided to the target by two naval helicopters.
The mission was a complete success, since we only received a little damage on our ships and we sunk or crippled at least 87 cargo-ships.”

About the ship

In 2009, I started the construction of a 1,5meters LEGO aircraft carrier based on the Russian Kuznestov aircraft carrier, which I named “Project Kalstin”. Unfortunately, I never completed the ship since at the time I lacked hundreds of reddish brown tiles necessary to complete the aircraft runway.
The incomplete hull of the ship was later modified into the 2,8meters Battlecruiser Gualdim Pais.

But I always wanted to have a picture of the Kalstin in action. And finally, here it is! XD

VL-1700 Gryphus

More info and images here, please click!
The Vila-Disparador VL-1700 Gryphus is a single-seat, single-engine, fifth generation multirole Stealth fighter capable of perform ground attack, reconnaissance, and air defense missions. The Gryphus is the successor of the Nemesis and VL-1230 Strike fighters and it’s the new “light” Stealth fighter of the Imperial Lego Air Force, the Thanatos being the medium Stealth Fighter. A new, heavy weight Stealth fighter is currently under construction.

The Gryphus has a reported maximum weapons load of 7,000 kg. The fighter has two internally mounted ENA-60 30mm cannons and three internal weapons bays: a large bay on the bottom of the fuselage and two smaller bays on the sides of the fuselage. It can carry eight compressed-carriage AA-2040 “Empire’s Spear” medium-long range missiles in the center bay and one medium short range AA-2020 “Valkyria” missile in each of the two side bays.
The Gryphus is also a dedicated ground-attack aircraft and it can carry a wide variety of air-to-surface weapons such as:
8 “Excalibur” Anti-runway bombs;
2 Valhalla Television-guided glide bombs;
8 AT-2040 “Vulcan” air-to-ground tactical missiles;
Various unguided and Cluster bombs, Laser-guided bombs, Napalm, as well as tactical termo-nuclear bombs.

While the new fighter typically carries its weapons internally, the wings include four hardpoints each rated to handle 1500 kg. Each hardpoint has a pylon that can carry a detachable fuel tank, a launcher holding air-air missiles or air to ground weapons, like the D.D.N. heavy anti-ship missile.
The Gryphus thrust vectoring nozzles allow the aircraft to turn tightly, and perform extremely high alpha (angle of attack) maneuvers such as the Herbst maneuver (or J-turn), Pugachev's Cobra,and the Kulbit.
The Gryphus is expected to take on the short-range Wild Weasel mission and it can carry anti-radiation missiles. For long-range strikes, the dedicated Wild Weasel version of the Firestorm is the main aircraft.

Although a carrier version was proposed, the Navy currently looks for a much more advanced fighter than the Thanatos, so the Gryphus will not operate from the Imperial navy aircraft carriers.
The “Fuzileiros Imperiais” (Imperial Marines) however, have shown some interest. For now, the “Fuzileiros” operate with the Fireline and it’s current replacement, the VTOL Strike Fighter Firewave.

About the model:
I wanted to build the smallest fighter possible which could carry internally, 8 of the new medium-long range AA-2040 “Empire’s spear” missile and 2 short medium range air-to-air missiles. I will try to upgrade the new aircraft, maybe with a new wing.

VL Buccaneer

The VL Buccaneer was an Imperial Lego low-level supersonic strike aircraft that served with the Imperial Lego Air Force on the Anti-ship and Ground Attack missions. A British design, it was heavily modified with a 45º swept wing, larger bomb-load and range as well as a modified cockpit to improve vision for both pilot and radar operator.

More info and images here, please click!
The Buccaneer was originally built for the Imperial Lego Navy Aircraft Carriers however, the Imperial Navy chose the Intruder instead. Still, the Imperial Lego Air Force showed some interest and after a few modifications, it entered service. Faster than the Intruder (although with a reduced bomb-load and range), the Buccaneer stayed in service until 2006, being replaced by the much more advanced VL-27 Flanker.

The Buccaneer had been designed specifically as a maritime nuclear strike aircraft. Therefore, it was usually armed with two EXT-500 anti-ship missiles, two rocket launchers and an extra fuel tank inside the bomb bay. The EXT-500 had a 150/200km range, maximum speed of Mach 2, weighted 890kg and carried a 500kg High-Explosive warhead. Usually, one missile was more than enough to sink a Frigate or destroyer. Sometimes, 4 missiles were carried; the EXT-500 was later replaced by the lighter but more powerful D.D.B. missile. The Buccaneer never used the giant D.D.N. anti-ship missile.
On ground attack or bombing missions, the Buccaneer usually carried 4 rocket launchers under the wings and twelve 500kg bombs internally. Maximum bomb load was 7 500kg. The Imperial Lego Air Force version also had two 30mm ENA-60 cannons under the fuselage, a very useful feature for the ground attack role (here was also a plan for a pack with twin Aden 30 mm cannons for the real life Buccaneer, but it was abandoned). Later, the aircraft was modified with new systems and radars; therefore it became capable of operating guided bombs as well as air-to-air medium range missiles.

About the model:
This aircraft is based on the Buccaneer, with some differences. The wings are larger and with a different angle because I just love 45º swept wings; the cockpit is also a lot different.
The aircraft has an internal bomb bay, movable rear air brakes and retractable landing gear.
The Buccaneer has always been one of my favorite aircrafts; I used to build a different version when I was a kid. During those days, almost all my aircraft were made in white, for example the Vautour, the F-16, Mig-23 and others. White was the only color I had in quantity for airplanes.
I shall modify the current VL Buccaneer to the British version in the near future.

Just a small question to everyone who had LEGOs, do you still have them?

Not my vast collection from my childhood (those went to younger brother and sister and long since gone) but have several Star Wars figures sets about, and a small bucketfull that I use for making custom RTV mold boxes when I resin cast something.

Star Wars is always a favorite thing to me. I have fond something interesting in your name.. haha.

VL-350 Foxlion

Shortly before the appearance of the first jet engines, the Lego Nation struggled to develop a high-speed light/medium bomber, which could fly faster than it’s rivals. However, the twin-engine configuration in use during those years produced too much drag at high speeds. After some though, the Foxlion was created.
The Foxlion performance was much better than other twin-engine designs due to its unique "push-pull" layout and the much lower drag of the in-line alignment of the two engines. Together with this configuration, a revolutionary Delta Wing was used for the first time as well as two high power engines. During operational tests, the Foxlion easy achieved 960km/h, faster than any other aircraft in the world.

Since it was so fast, it was decided to build both a bomber version and an Interceptor version. The bomber version had an internal 2000kg bombload, two 12,7mm heavy machine guns on the nose and one engine-mounted 37mm heavy cannon. The interceptor version could also receive four 37mm guns in pods under the wings.

However, shortly after the Foxlion became operational, the jet engine was invented. Since it was so fast, it stayed operational for many years, being as fast as some of the first jet aircrafts. With the appearance of the first supersonic fighters, the Foxlion was cleared obsolete.

To solve this, an idea appeared to develop a jet engine version, giving it a Mach 1 speed. The idea never left the drawing boards since the new, much lighter simpler and faster VL-234 Trovão became operational.

I´m currently preparing a large Diorama about the Second Battle of Tsushima, between Japan and Russia in 1947.

Although this “What-If” story takes place in 1947, Japan is at war with Russia and not the United States (which actually supports Japan during this conflict). The Second World War never happened and jet aircraft is still a thing of the future.

More pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/einon/

Aircraft Kirin

Above, the large Aircraft Carrier Kirin, escorted by the Battleship Iburi (armed with 12 406mm (16") guns).

The “What-if” Story:
During the invasion of China in 1937, the light aircraft carrier Karuma got hit by five 500kg bombs dropped by nationalists Tupolevs SB bombers, which in a matter of minutes pierced the flight deck and exploded on the hangar (not flash or vapor tight and poorly ventilated) destroying all aircraft (fully fuelled and armed!) waiting there. Poorly trained damage-control teams didn’t help either, and so the Aircraft Carrier sunk within a matter of two hours with heavy loss of life.
With the danger of a Second Russo Japanese war on sight, construction of the two huge Kirin aircraft carriers was started in 1942, both becoming operational in 1945 (therefore, two years before the Second Russo-Japanese War began). Built with help of technicians from the USA and the Weimar Republic (Germany), they were by far the largest warships in the world at the time, with a length of 302meters.

Two ships were built; Kirin and Mizuchi, the later having a portside island which in service proved a failure and was never repeated again.
Fast (34 knots), these two ships were built without any treaty limitations, therefore they were heavily protected with a 120mm armoured flight deck and two hangars (typical on the Japanese Aircraft Carriers).
The Japanese were able to understand their mistakes with the Karuma and designed all their new aircraft carriers with strong and though armour. Everything was made to defend the new ships against torpedos and heavy weight bombs. Fuel tanks and the magazines were also strongly protected. Damage control teams also became a lot better after the experience with Karuma and radar as installed on almost all ships to help detect approaching bombers. The name Karuma was later given to another aircraft carrier.
With lots of space, two very spacious hangars, two elevators and planes equipped with folding wings, the Kirins were capable of carrying (at least in theory) 120 aircrafts (30 of them dismantled), although an air group of 98 planes was more common (40 fighters, 30 dive-bombers, 24 torpedo-bombers and 4 scout planes equipped with in board radar). American doctrine of parking aircraft on the flight deck was also employed, therefore allowing extra aircraft to be carried.

The Kirins were so large that medium bombers like the Mitsubishi G4M “Betty” bomber could operate from it! Equipped with folding wings and powerful engines, this configuration gave the Japanese Carriers a far more menacing capacity. The medium bombers could also be employed as Awacs or refuel other aircrafts. Since Medium bombers required a large runway to take off, the ship received two very powerful catapults.
The ship also had sixteen 127mm AA (anti-aircraft) guns and at least 120 47mm Auto-cannons in 40 triple positions (although some extra weapons were added later). Thanks to the Americans, the Kirins also had advanced radars to detect the enemy Russian aircrafts approaching. The Type 27U radar (U from “USA”) was capable of detecting a group of aircrafts at more than 180miles and a single aircraft at 126miles. Russian radars built in Britain at the time were slightly more accurate and advanced.

Operational story:
The two ships became operational in 1945 and for the next two years they were mostly used on trainings and naval exercises. On November 24, 1946, a 1000kg bomb fell by accident from a bomber parked on the flight deck of Kirin, exploding and producing a large hole on the armoured deck; then a series of massive explosions produced more and more damage. However the ship Damage-Control crew was alert and after a 2 hours hard battle against the fire, the ship was eventually saved. The fire destroyed and buckled more than 60% of the flight deck with at least 24 planes and 210 crew men lost; the hangar roof below the fire also become slightly deformed from the heat. However after 4 months of repair, the ship was again operational, with many more lessons learn. More protection was therefore given to both ships.

With the start of the Second Russo Japanese War, these heavily armed carriers were mostly used as forward floating fortresses, being able to land and refuel/rearm aircrafts from less protected carriers operating to the rear.
After a series of special missions performed during the 32 days Second Russo-Japanese war, the two ships were sent to the Second and last Battle of Tsushima.
It’s widely accepted that there are lucky and unlucky ships, and Mizuchi was a lucky ship.
Just a few moments after launching all their planes against the far larger Russian fleet at the Tsushima strait, the Russian submarine S-45 fired 4 torpedos against the Mizuchi and two of them hit the huge carrier. Rapid reaction from the Damage Control teams and counter-flooding measures prevented the ships from sinking. The ship, still moving at high speed and with a damaged bow, took on so much water that it nearly capsized!
The Russians, believing that the aircraft carrier had been sunk got relaxed after the news transmitted by the S-45… They would have a great surprise shortly after…

In 2009, I created an advanced 4th generation Strike fighter, the VL-235 Nemesis.
More images here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/einon/
This aircraft was a combination of three planes: the fuselage -> F-15 Eagle, variable sweep wing -> F-14 and the 3D thrust vectoring nozzles equipped engines came from the F-22 Raptor stealth fighter.
At the time, the design was very simple, lacking retractable landing gear and other stuff; the pilot had no clear view for the rear, it wasn’t snot, lacked an effective low level camouflage, etc, etc, etc…

Still, I always felt that the Nemesis idea was interesting and so I decided to build a new version. However, many things changed over the years; the new fighter needed to be Stealth or at least have some advanced stealth features, new camouflage for low level and ground attack missions, retractable landing gear (obvious!), refined aerodynamics, clear view for the pilot and the latest in armament and radar equipment.

The new and much re-shaped VL-235M Ultra-Nemesis belongs to the “4,5+++” Generation, like the Su-35 or the F-15 Silent Eagle. Although not fully stealth, the aircraft is covered with the latest RAM materials (Radar Absorbent Material), the twin vertical tails are canted outward 15 degrees to reduce radar cross section and most of the armament is carried internally.
It has three internal missile bays, each one capable of carrying 2 long-range “Empire’s Spear” Air-air missile, 5 external supports under the fuselage (four of them prepared for missiles or bombs and one for an external fuel tank), and four supports under the wings (two of them movable). Two 30mm auto-cannons are installed on the wing roots, but rail guns will be installed in due time (they are being developed right now for the new 6th Generation Fighters).

The new fighter is extremely fast and agile and can perform both ground attack and air-to-air missions equally well, at half the price of a “Thanatos” Stealth fighter.
The Ultra-Nemesis was extensively modified by ENA (Empresa Nacional de Armamento), the same factory that modified the “Gerifalte” into the “Ofnir”, the “Fireline” VTOL into the “Firewave” VTOL Fighter and the first “Nemesis” into the “Thanatos” Stealth fighter.

The VL-120 Evrae Heavy Bomber made its first flight in 1137 and entered service in 1138 (Imperial Calendar). At the time, it was by far the fastest 4-engine strategic bomber in the world; however, it was also the smallest and carried a bomb-load of just 2000kg, comparable to medium, not heavy bombers.
It was however fitted with an extremely powerful 20 mm auto-cannon on the nose (used for anti-ship and bomber destroyer missions) and four defensive 7,62mm light machine guns; it could also carry two 533mm anti-ship torpedoes, depth charges or mines.
For a very short period of time, it was one of the most modern planes in the world, being mostly used for oceanic patrols and anti-ship missions.
The “Evrae” had a relatively brief operational career as a bomber, being relegated to second line duties from 1142 onwards when other four and six-engined bombers took over its role.

The plane is based on the Dutch Fokker T.V design, equipped with four inline engines. Evrae is also the name of the Dragon who defended Bevelle on the Final Fantasy X game. Next step is a four engine bomber (or even a six engine) :D

VL-400 Quimera

The Vila Disparador VL-400 “Quimera” is a single-seat, single-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet multi-role strike fighter originally developed for the Imperial Lego Air Force to replace the Freelancer fighter/interceptor. Fast, agile and extremely maneuverable, the Quimera was also operated by the Imperial Lego Naval Aviation, usually from the 130 000 tons Imperial Aircraft carriers.
The plane is considered today the very first “Strike Fighter” operated by the Lego nation, the project evolving from a high-speed interceptor into a fully multi-role capable (for both ground attack and air-to-air missions) fighter.
Featuring the highly advanced R-323 long-range radar, the Quimera was the first plane to employ the Fire-Dragon Air-to-air missile in combat and for many years was also the only fighter capable of firing 4 individual missiles against four different targets at the same time.
The Quimera nine weapons stations (including a small internal bomb bay) had a capacity for up to 8500kg of various weapons, including ground attack guided and unguided missiles or bombs, rockets, air-to-air missiles and other stores. Two 30mm ENA-60 auto-cannons are also carried on the sides of the frontal landing gear.
Despite the dimensions and heavy weight of the fighter, the very powerful V-475 jet engine and the variable geometry wings allows it to achieve a maximum speed of Mach 2.7, with four Firedragon missiles under the fuselage. To help maintain the control at those very high speeds, two movable fins deploy under the fuselage once the plane retracts his wings.

As soon as the Quimera entered service, it started to replace the older but still highly effective “Freelancer” fighter. Pilots found the new aircraft as docile as the previous one, thanks to the new wings and the advanced avionics. Before the Quimera, to perform a certain special role (like Wild Weasel), it was necessary to build a completely new plane for that role or to modify extensively an existing one. The VL-400 was the first multi-role plane, being capable of perform different missions without extensive modifications. On that role, it survived until the VL-27 Flanker fighter appeared.

Hi everybody

I´m going to show you two new planes that I made sometime ago.
Simuroc

The Simuroc is a 3-engine enlarged version of the P-61 Black Widow. It´s used as a heavy fighter, high speed bomber, interceptor, anti-tank, ground attack aircraft, night fighter, etc, etc, etc. It´s a very adaptable design ^^

Espadon

The Espadon is a Mach 3 carrier fighter. It´s heavily based on the Vought Crusader III but with twin fins and superior fire-power.

As usual, more info and photos can be found here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/einon/
