Hi all
The title of this entry will totally give away the nature of the vehicle and its colour, but hey-ho.
The starting point is this.....

It's 1/48th scale spitfire that I originally started super detailing before it went into storage, now with a lot of the parts and enhancements missing, it is dieing the death of a thousand swatches.
I am still resolving the final design in my brain at the moment so I will post any progress as soon as something happens.

........ and so it begins.
I've managed to remove the wings and split the fuselage quite easily. But have found that the plastic is unusually brittle, probably due to being stored unprotected In the box of doom in the loft for a number of years. This model is really old as at the time of original construction I was using plastic wood as a filler which predates the first body putty for plastic kits.
So first things first, plated over the engine bay and filled with Milliput.

Then some experimentation with a conning tower......

All the curvy bits that go into the wing were were filed/sanded off to give it a proper hull and a couple of split bulkheads were added to bolster up the brittle plastic.......

It was at this point I realised there was a big hole to fill and I had set myself up for some serious PSR. ................aaaargh !

Wow instant conning tower! Now that's some serious sub juju there Mog!
Reminds me of something awful I did to a 1/144 Super Guppy a while back:
The idea was that Yoko Ono lost her fortune on a disastrous fashion line.
So she did a Yellow Submarine musical re-boot to make her money back.

Your version is bound to be less offensive to the modeling gods than mine was.

Best of luck! I think you've made a grand start!

Amazingly managed to get some unplanned modelling activity, so its PSR Time !
Actually, not quite, i need to install something to PSR onto ;)
To start i have bridged the gap with a strip of plastic card and let that set......

Gave this a good twenty four hours to set but it was still a bit bendy.
To rectify this i had a bottle of homemade polystyrene putty that i made some time ago, amazingly it was still pliable an with a few drops liquid cement it was back to its normal sticky self. Polystyrene filler is great for filling large areas, but not so good for fine work as it is barely controllable.
Here i have given the insides a good coating.....

I gave this another twenty four hours to dry and it has stiffened up the structure a treat. i will put some on the outside edge ready for the filler, and then the PSR will really begin!
More when it happens.........
Thanks for looking

weird (hence : interesting ! ) idea ! go on !
-
I can imagine using a popsicle stick to spread that and then throwing it away.
I can’t wait to see how this turns out.
-
That's a great looking start to some serious gap filling, Mog!
If you've got some curvy sprue to put in there, that might help keep everything stiff during PSR.
Then again, I get pretty heavy-handed so you may not need it like I do. :-\

Thanks for the comments guys
Ericr: This one will be finished primarily in a primary colour - right up your street.
Kerick: Absolutely spot on ! Except used a wooden coffee stirrer.
Brian: Thanks for the tip, but the polystyrene putty appears to be doing the business. No extra reinforcement needed.

Now, are you playing the album while you build this? ;)
Or perhaps the movie? :o
-
Actually neither....... but I'll tell you a story. :o
I usually listen to the Absolute Classic Rock radio station in the UK when I'm modelling and about six months ago I started building a 1/72 Mk 5 Spitfire, for reasons i cannot remember they played The Beatles Yellow Submarine, a bit of a change from the normal fare. Childishly I found myself chanting 'we all live in a yellow supermarine' to the music.
Then the brain cells collided, looked at the shape of the mk 5 fuselage I had just put together, espied the larger motley hanger queen described in the introduction then mind went 'hmmmmm' and i wrote the idea down in my projects book. ???
Along came the Scale-o-rama (or floaty for that matter) and here I am.
The mk 5 has gone on the back burner again but I have progressed, it has received its first coat of paint ;)
Incidentally The Beatles Revolver and David Bowies Ziggy Stardust were the first two music cassettes I bought with my first pay cheque back in 1973. Revolver and Sgt Pepper are still my favourite Beatles albums.
More updates soon...

You can see from this I have run out of grey filler and I have switched to green, I decided to not use the Milliput this time, alough it gives a great finish it dries very hard and is a devil to sand if you leave it too long. I've done a bit more work on the conning tower and started construction of the piloting position.
More when it happens......
Thanks for watching

Dive planes gotta come from somewhere?
Just reaching...
Looking good Mog and I like the look of that tower. Those things aren't as easy to scratch as they might appear.

Hi all
I must admit didn't think of that, but the plastic was brittle and virtually self destructed as I cut it. I wanted a fairly chunky conning tower as this will be there entry to the sub and an observation area.
It will have dive planes fore and aft I'm still searching for suitable spares, I'm scaling it down (up?) to 1/72 but I don't want them to be too big. In truth I don't want to spoil the lines too much.
If push comes to shove I will scratch build some

Good answer, right there. ;)

Thinks: needs some ballast tanks too
...... To the drop tanks box !

Hi all
Well I've broken the back of the PSR, it still needs a bit of finishing but I will do that once the body is stuck together and the conning tower in place as I'm going to have to fair that into the main body, I'm not going to do much internal detail.
Currently I am marking up the port holes and the glass bottom section, the port holes I hope to glaze with Clearfix.
The viewing window will be a plastic frame with acetate glazing I'm hoping to assemble this separately and fit it later when the final painting is complete. I see problems with this as I have to work it to the curve of the main body.
Still sourcing the ballast tanks and dive planes.
Here are the main components taped together...........
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7897/46378029655_7dd985250e_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2dEgwqX) (https://flic.kr/p/2dEgwqX) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
One side of the rudder snapped off while sanding, I'll stick that back on when I join the body parts. I've placed the pilots canopy in position it looks like its gonna need a whole lot of levelling
And a view of the underneath........
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7843/46378020095_56dd251127_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2dEgtA8) (https://flic.kr/p/2dEgtA8) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
You can see the other reason for not quite finishing the PSR, a wide gap has appeared at the join so I will need to deal with this when the sides come together so another PSR session is in the offing.
More when it happens.........
Thanks for looking

That mock-up looks great, Mog and I'm sure you'll soar over any obstacles just like a Spit gaining altitude.
I noticed some Model Color paint on your bench. I tried the stuff and was disappointed (why is Model Masters disappearing?). Do you have any brush-painting tips that might help?
Thanks for the update, I always enjoy your posts!
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks Brian
After all the hype about Valajo Model Colour paints I was quite disappointed, perhaps it's probably more popular with people who spray paint. To me it was no different to Tamiya except the finish was more matt. So only advice here is to thin it at roughly one part water to five parts paint which gives a reasonable finish.
I was however impressed with the MIG Ammo paints, on the one i have used I found i could paint this without mixing, it was quite thin and required four coats but the finish was good.
Hope this helps

Hi all
I'm coming to the conclusion that I really really should have done more pre planning on this one, but then again most of the fun I get out of these sort of projects is by having an idea and then totally winging it for the rest of the build, so I can only blame my impulsive self.
Regardless, I have made some more progress. The holes for the port holes have now been drilled and those in the conning tower have been glazed with Clearfix. The roof of the conning tower has been glued in position and some internal bracing attached, work has started on the periscopes.
The opening for the glass bottom has been cut and the whole interior has been given a coat of white paint, prior to glazing.
In the meantime I have successfully sourced the ballast tanks from old drop tanks, also the dive planes fore and aft which ironically look like they are ex spitfire bits of a different scale again.
I've also found a pair of propellers which appear a little to big so my sub may have just a single prop instead of two as originally planned. One or two what are your views ?
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7842/46618612124_21eafa055d_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2e2wzdy) (https://flic.kr/p/2e2wzdy) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
As soon as the remaining portholes are glazed I can start thinking of assembling the main components.
I still have to decide what to do with the bow, I want to put a glazed dome there but my spares box has not provided a suitable piece. I may try and form one with acetate or sweep the existing curves to a rounded point or search light point, time will tell.
So that's the story so far, more when it happens.......
Thanks for looking.
Mog

Wow it's really starting to take shape, Mog!
I like those port holes and the props look great too. Hard to say about using just one or both. I prefer going with both, but I think your choice may depend on how close to the original you want to get.
I'd be searching through my collection of clear blister pack for that piece on the nose. Maybe a 1/72 gun turret if you've got one rattling around?
I couldn't agree more about part of the fun being winging it. Sometimes I'm surprised at what I come up with and I've had builds take a new turn because I'm figuring it out on the fly.
Thanks for a great update. I'm enjoying following along with you!

Well worded statement. I should print, frame, and hang on wall. Applies to models and 1/1 car projects.
Certainly taking a different form vrs a Spitrfire. Fine job and results wading thru heavy PSR process. Last picture with laid out parts really helps visualizing.
Wish you skill and luck conquering mods.
-
Thanks for the comment guys,
I have decided to go with both props they will each be mounted in a sort of pod as close to the body and themselves as I can get.
I'm not intending to get close to the original it's already too long and thin for that, however there will be a few nods to the original so twin props it is.
Think of it as "a" yellow Submarine rather than "the" yellow Submarine.
"Full speed ahead Mr. Boatswain, full speed ahead".........

Hi all
Made a little bit more progress, I have been slowed down building up the piloting position to get the canopy level. I need to get this sorted in order to work out the position of the captains seat.
In the mean time I have started construction of the propellers and will work on the conning tower and periscopes, I have also started prepping the dive planes but these won't be attached until the hull is closed up and the second wave of PSR is completed.
Here are the propeller pods under construction using the ends of good old drop tanks and some plastic card.

I have decided to have a clear dome in the bow but still haven't found a suitable piece for it. Maybe time to brush up on my smash forming skills also I will need to put in some bulkheads and a bit more internal detail than I intended. Otherwise you will be able to see the full length of the inside of the Submarine, not a pretty sight.
Thanks for looking..............

Hi all
Managed to get some unprecedented time at the workbench this weekend, I said earlier that I was not going to detail the inside, I sorta lied, after putting the sides together for the umpteenth time I realised that the views through the front and the glass bottom were not very pretty and set about putting in a few bulkheads then one thing led to another and this happened.

Hi all
Made some progress but not before I had a bit of a setback.
I've been banging on about how brittle the plastic is on this model but I've also found out that at the extremities the plastic seems to be degrading and has taken on a waxy feel the result of which I cant get a strong bond between the new and and old plastic surfaces (or old and old for that matter !).
The first I knew of this was when I was tidying up the tail PSR, a horizontal crack appeared in the filler due to the underlying plastic joint parting, Also the rudder top extension kept breaking away when filing to shape.
After several attempts to join these bits and failing I desperately turned to applying what could only be described as a polystyrene plaster consisting of a strip of ten thou plastic card bedded on home made polystyrene putty, also stuck the rudder extension on with poly putty and crossed my fingers for twenty four hours.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/7915/47552298071_49aa0a7896_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2fs2Xw8) (https://flic.kr/p/2fs2Xw8) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
It worked, the patch stayed solid as I sanded it to shape and the rudder extension stayed attached.............phew !
With that hurdle overcome the next elements came together in quick succession.
The conning tower was attached and contoured to the hull.........

And the dive planes were attached............

Followed by the propellor pods and rudder........
(https://live.staticflickr.com/7826/32609740597_eb0a379902_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/RFBrLR) (https://flic.kr/p/RFBrLR) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
And finally the portholes have been glazed using Clearfix..........

I am still working on the bow glass and the glass bottom, but now the yellow supermarine is entering the spray booth.............

That's looking really good! I have most of the parts for such a craft laying around, makes me want to try it!
For the clear parts you need have you considered the "heat and mash" method? Carve out the shape you need from balsa or such, heat clear polystyrene in an oven until it sags and mash it over the mold. I found it works best if the mold is attached to a stick and the stick clamped in a vice or to a workbench. This leaves you two hands to manipulate the hot plastic sheet. Wear thick gloves for that part of course. A hot blow dryer works too.

Thanks Kerick, this is my backstop, I have acquired some objects with the rough shape I want to use
But no panic (yet!) as it will be the last component to be stuck on

That's one phenomenal save with the plastic situation there Mog! That's an issue I had derail more than one project over the years.
This is looking outstanding with those cool bow planes and the conning tower on!
Thanks for another fantastic update!

Hi all
The yellow submarine has had its first coat of rattle can white primer and on first inspection it looks like not to much remedial work to do before its final coat. In the meanwhile I have assembled the components to cast the front dome of the submarine. I got fed up looking for something in the right shape and decided to grasp the smash molding nettle.
I've got some thirty thou acetate sheet which I am trapping in some thin plywood frames that i bought sometime ago from a craft shop, all held in place with spring clips. My heat source is a candle and for my shapes I have a plastic egg, a polystyrene egg, and a ceramic rabbit.

It has been a long while since I have done any molding so I had a few misfires and the polystyrene egg was a complete non starter, when I plunged the egg into the heated acetate it melted and fused with it, not a good start.
In contrast the plastic egg also stuck but with a bit if gentle twiddling came free and the ceramic rabbit head performed perfectly.
So now I have a fine selection of moldings to choose from to create the dome

Full speed ahead now! ;)

I was just delighted by the bunny on your workbench, Mog.
That's some very fine smash-u-forming indeed and I hope the bunny doesn't need an aspirin.

-
Nice smash-forming work. Got a couple ceramic eggs for decorations around here that look like they'd be perfect for that role.
-
Thanks guys
Kerick :- Yup nearly done ;)
Brian :- Thanks, Bunny is fine, just having some hot flushes apparently ::)
Elmayearle :- could have done with some small ceramic eggs, would have been ideal for this --sigh-- :(

Short break for a little backstory...……
The Yellow Supermarine
The Yellow Supermarine started life in the days just before World War Two, a rich entrepreneur had seen the design of the new Supermarine Spitfire and was impressed by its shape and aerodynamics.
Working on the premise that if the body shape could slip cleanly through the air it could also slip efficiently through the water he commissioned an industrial boat building company to build a small submarine based on the spitfires body design with the intention of creating a fleet of tourist submarines that would do trips underwater around the coral reefs in Australia, The Bahamas and other Pacific islands.
The design featured large portholes, a glass bottom section and a clear nosecone at the bow for the tourists to see the reefs. It was also to have four novelty miniature periscopes for use when the submarine was cruising just below the waves.
Construction was quite advanced when war was declared and work all but stopped in favour of more important projects. The entrepreneur however convinced the powers that be that his design could have military uses and one submarine was completed without the glass bow or bottom and only one periscope.
In the military’s eyes it was a disappointment, while it was mechanically sound and handled well, the range of its electric only power plant was limiting, as was its maximum depth of dive. It was too small and under powered to carry a torpedo and too large to compete with the up and coming X-Boats.
All further development was stopped, the submarine was sent to a large naval repair depot where it served as a floating crew hut and mobile workshop for the rest of the war before being struck off the register and sold to a scrap merchant, who continued to use it as its wartime role. Eventually the submarine outlived its usefulness and was beached with several other rusting hulks.
The submarine lay there for many years, narrowly avoiding the scrappers cutting torch on several occasions until it was eventually tracked down by the entrepreneur who brought it for scrap value and had it towed to a small dockyard with a view to returning it to its former glory.
On inspection it was found that time had been kind to this vehicle, although rusty in places it was still structurally sound, and the electric motors still worked despite some of the batteries having run dry.
The submarine was given a full refit and converted back to its original design with the four periscopes and viewing areas, the only addition was a small petrol engine located at the rear of the conning tower for trickle charging the batteries to increase the submarines range.
The Submarine began its new life resplendent in a new yellow paint scheme and proved very popular, quietly motoring between the islands for many successful of years. Eventually time took its toll on the equipment and spare parts became hard to get or expensively scarce, coupled with the rising cost of operating the craft it was decided to cease operations and the Yellow Submarine was once again under the threat of the scrappers cutting torch.
Salvation came from another man with vision, once again the Yellow Submarine was purchased for scrap value. It was towed to a boat yard and the insides were completely gutted and refitted as a self-contained holiday home. It was then towed to a remote island and permanently moored in a small secluded inlet. A caretaker was employed to maintain the vessel and keep the food, water, and fuel for the generator topped up.
Despite or because of the exorbitant rates charged the Yellow Submarine became very popular in music and entertainment circles as it provided a welcome getaway from the paparazzi or a quiet space to write or compose.
At one point the advertising blurb boasted a certain sixties boy band had stayed there for a while and it had been the influence for one of their famous songs until somebody forcefully pointed out that it wasn’t ‘that’ boy band, so it couldn’t have influenced ‘that’ song. The blurb was duly pulled, but some aspects of the cartoon vehicle still looked curiously similar to parts of the floating home.
The Yellow Submarine finally met its fate during a violent hurricane, its moorings parted in the high winds allowing the storm surge to drag it out to sea then push it onto a coral reef, smashing the glass bottom and clear nose.
The submarine sank quickly and was lost, until about five years later when it was found by divers quietly becoming an artificial coral reef, continuing the sterling service of the Yellow Submarine
The next post will be the completed model...………………..

Thanks for the comments chaps, much appreciated.
I'm declaring this project "finished" but its not quite. The Decals i have ordered have not arrived and the ETA may or may not be during the two week extension (if it is given). I am therefore going to enter the Yellow Supermarine as it stands now and if the Decals do turn up then i will republish the pics.
So Here are the pics of the completed Yellow Submarine............

That’s come out brilliantly, if you didn’t know you’d hardly guess that started as a spitfire.

It looks great! Brings back fond memories of the Disneyland submarine ride (I actually thought it was a real submarine when I was a kid:

Now that's utterly delightful in every sense of the word!
BTW the Scale-o-rama GB will be extended until May 15. I feel bad for not letting that out sooner.
Most excellent, Mog!

Thanks Antonio,
Well chaps, The decals finally arrived but I was still procrastinating as to decorate it as the picture in my mind or not at all, in the end I opted for the middle ground and settled for subtle and understated
I'll let you decide if I took the right path, but in my eyes it looks properly finished.

The palm tree logo is a fingernail transfer and the text is made up from a Ventura decal sheet of serial numbers. I cant praise Ventura decals enough, not only are they precise they are not printed on a continuous sheet of adhesive, each digit is separate and requires no trimming. It makes a very fiddly job a lot easier and as you can see the results are good.
Thanks for looking......

I'm glad the decals arrived in time and your middle-of-the-road approach paid off handsomely, Mog!
Reef Tours sound like fun. As long as they don't get too close to those reefs that is.
What a fantastic model!

Beautiful selection and application of decals to finish off the model in a gorgeous manner.

Those fingernail decals are showing up much more often. Great choice all around. I’ve got some fuselages laying around be that would work for this. Not yellow, I wouldn’t copy you that closely.

Thanks again for all the kind comments guys.
Kerick : this so nearly became a Seehund or Kaiten style Submarine, but use yellow if it fits. Brian had already produced an excellent yellow Submarine long before I started on this one ! ;D ;D

The Beatles made the idea of a yellow submarine so popular that there are a rather large number of civilian submarines & quasi-submarines painted yellow in the Real World.
So, I wouldn't be too worried about "stealing" the idea from 'mog, he & everyone else stole it from Paul, John, George & Ringo. ;)
