1/72 A5M2 - Peru
« on: February 09, 2015, 08:28:36 AM »
I loved Acree's Peruvian A5M profiles in this thread: http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=5110.msg83881 (and his build here: beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=5164.msg84778)

I decided to make one as well. The HobbyBoss 1/72 A5M2 is cheap and goes together quickly, although I spent a very, very long time hollowing out the so-called "engine" in the cowl. I took the Fiat A.74 radial engine from the Revell 1/72 Macchi C.200 Saetta and chopped off 9 cylinders to replicate a 9 cylinder single row engine. This is a very old kit and the plastic was brittle, so the engine is just a minor improvement over the HobbyBoss engine. I added a spinner (from a Zero, IIRC) to help hide the Frankenstein engine.

I also detailed the cockpit, adding sidewalls and an instrument panel.

Here it is, ready for paint:

The decal sheet was based on Acree's drawings. I messed up on the pendant blue color. I added the EAP ("Ejercito Aereo Peruano") and skipped the red band over the fuselage.

The antenna wire is ultra thin, stretchy, nearly invisible rigging wire from Uschi.

I added some weathering as well.

I didn't follow Acree's profile 100%, mainly because I left the printout on my desk. Hence, the cowling colors are different. The number "15-2" is the year and month I finished this.

Here are closeups of the cockpit.

Thanks for looking and to Acree for making a great profile!

That's a real stunner, Frank! Your representation of that NMF is among the best I've seen! That wash enhances the panel lines, etc. nicely and looks great in this scale!

Most excellent!

WOW!!!! Stunning Frank!  I was happy with mine until I saw yours!  Your finish is so exceedingly far above mine I'm ready to quit modelling and stick to drawing... then I see the others' (Logan, etc) drawings... oh well.    I presume you printed the decals yourself?  I have tried that in the past and failed fairly miserably so I didn't even try on this one.  That's why mine has no bow/arrow triangle on the cowl or XXI in the pennant.  Anyway, congratulations on a sweet job!

If everyone did profiles like I do, there'd be a whole lot fewer in the world! I spend way too much time on mine, then I get burnt out and don't touch them for weeks. Fortunately, we've got more reasonable folks like you around, Acree, to give us the inspiration to get our butts back in gear and start profiling/modeling again.

Cheers,

Logan

Huh, funny, because that's what I thought when I saw yours....

I used my old ALPS MD-5000 to print the decals, although I may switch to using the DecalPro fx method. To use the ALPS I have to fire up Virtualbox with an emulated copy of my old XP system and print from there. The ALPS printers were always finicky POSes and age does not improve them. The only reason they're so popular is that they can print in white.

Your profiles are quite good - good enough to copy into a physical model! I love Logan's work as well, but most of his profiles map out to either expensive or hard to build kits (like his X-51 series).

If you (or anyone) wants a copy of the decal files, email me. I can save them as separate PDF layers.

That looks so right.
The idea behind it fits the era, and geographical location.
The paintwork and build are excellent (wish I could do as well).
Overall, perfect, love it to bits.
