1/72 A400M
« on: October 07, 2013, 08:05:43 AM »
Hi everyone
I was invited to post my latest project here by Greg, so here I am :)
This is the Revell 1/72 A400M in a WIF scheme. It is a modified RNZAF Euro scheme for the C130. The decals are from Old Models, there is the Revell/Eduard PE set there, SAC white metal landing gear and about 18 2mm SMD LED's inside. I did have the wing tips lit but I accidentally shorted them out during testing AFTER I had sealed them up, so unfortunately, they are no more
I did intend to motorize the props, but int he end, I felt that would be a bit too gimmicky for me, so I passed.
Please feel free to critique/comment

Thanks for stopping by and having a look

There is a full WIP here if you would like to have a look: http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=265052

Kind regards

Simon

thanks Cliffy
This was my last build for a while. I am taking a "holiday" from modelling to concentrate on family life. Once things have settled down, I've got a 1/35 Trumpeter BR-52 with full Big Ed rearing to go, also a 1/32 SU-27, a 1/350 Typhoon Sub, New Jersey and Enterprise plus a 1/72 P-3 and I also need to finish my Moebius Galactica. I have others as well, but they are wayyy down the list of priorities at present.
Thanks again for your interest :)

Kind regards

Simon

Outstanding mate!  Glad you accepted my invite.

This is very believable too.  I could easily see the Kiwis getting a couple of A400Ms.

thankyou very much guys for your kind comments - I really do appreciate them.
I've been having a look around these boards and I like what I see.  When I get back into building again, I'll do a WIP thread here I think

I for one would really like to hear more about LED lighting, especially for some of the sci-fi stuff I have lined up.

hey Brian!! I had no idea you posted here too :) Great to see you as well
In regards to the lighting and power source, I used 2mm Pre-wired SMD LEDs and inserted them into a strip of plastic card. I had to remodel the roof as Revell got the shape wrong. It was good though because it did allow the fabrication of the lights

the 9V battery is housed in this:

and this is some of the interior you can't see:

this part is a complete fabrication of my imagination - it is the load master's station but the kit is completely devoid of any detail, so I made it up with the use of a 1/48 CH53 PE console board. You can't really see it anyway, but I wanted something there

happy to answer any other questions :)

Brilliant way to house the battery man  8)  Love the interior detailing.

I know what you mean about taking a break from modeling, no sweat.  When you get to the New Jersey let me know.  I'm a tour guide aboard her sister the Wisconsin so I can get you all the photos you'll want.

Had a hunch the battery was the cargo.. brilliant execution. 8)
Must try the Surface Mount LED's as you have now demonstrated most admirably how they are best used.

As usual the detail is first class.

yeah they (SMD's) are really handy - especially for lighting small spaces. I used them in the Galactica flight pods with great effect and will use them again to light the BR52. They were also in the wings on this one but I shorted them out during testing AFTER I had sealed the wings up  C:-)
should've just left alone when they were working....
Pre-wired ones are best because soldering something that small is not an easy task. I get mine from here:
