A couple of days ago, a friend of mine on Facebook suggested re-engining the Tu-95 Bear with turbofans. Most of his commenters were more concerned with why that wouldn't work than they were with talking about how it could be done. I dared to invite him over here to discuss the topic, but he finds the layout a little confusing. I thought I'd jumpstart the conversation by opening a thread. As always, feel free to chime in with any other Bear-related ideas.

Here are a couple line-art bashes I did.
Because 32 prop blades just aren't enough!

Peacemaker-ish!

This was based on some video game trailer.

Here's the screen-shot it is based on. A little searching revealed the game's name to be "Stormbirds".

No reason why you couldn't put turbojets/turbofans on a Tu-95. I think it would end up looking a bit like a Tu-16 though, as Andrei Tupolev wasn't really enamoured of podded engines in the early-mid-1950s. A later conversion in the 1970s or later might have had them.
-
Most excellent :) Those three are totally cool 8)
Now I have another wanna build on top of gobs of others :-\
-
I agree with Rickshaw that if this was to be an alternate original configuration, that it would almost certainly have engines buried in the fuselage, much like the competitor Myasishchev M-4/3M.
If you're looking for a podded configuration, such as a a mid-life upgrade with Il-76 or Il-86 engine pods, then it would probably look a lot like the Myasishchev M-28/2M, but with Tupolev's signature landing gear pods and a more conventional tricycle landing gear.

So why not replace the turboprops with UDF's? It might be even noisier than it is now.

One I have planned:

What a design 8)
Yet another wanna build !

Something I discovered recently: if you take the fuselage of the 1/72 Trumpeter Tupolev Tu-142MR "Bear J" (see below) which is the one with the ELF Comms fit, it provides a remarkably good starting point for some form of submarine...probably Soviet...maybe DE.

Cut off the fin and you should see what I mean. ;)
Hmmm...the idea of turning a aircraft into a submarine...does this mean I am channelling either Brian or Alvis... ???

Oh! :icon_surprised: 'tis excellent!
Forward-swept outer wings? >:D
-
Greg, don't forget Trumpy makes a 1/144 Tu-95 as well in case you want to build a smaller sub or add some sort of mini-sub ;)
-
Eccentric geared turbofans.

It would look something like a s t r e t c h e d November class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_class_submarine) nuclear sub.

Errr...that's not what I meant to post...let's try that again:

Nice,,, appreciate the ideas and inspiration. :)

Quite a few years ago, Hannants had a sale on 'Kitchen' missiles, really cheap. So I had bought a bunch without really thinking where I was going to use them. On the two different Tu-22's I've got in the stash I think if I remember correctly. Now I've got an idea how to install them --- :)

I found these yesterday while going through a box that hasn't been looked in years. They turned out to actually be 'Kipper' AS-2 missiles.

For fun.
EL/W-2090 chosen due to at least perceived ease of implementation.

Interesting. What about fitting a fixed array Electronic scanned radar such as those shown below:

It does....

Gaaahhh... that just got me to look at the Trumpy 1/72 Bear kit I have lanquishing on the shelf.
I just removed the Contrail 1/72 TU-126 MOSS AEW model that was completed eons ago from the horrors of the roof space to be banished under the house. Nowhere else to put it these days.
Stop it..You do not have the space. Bad modeller.

A lot of British & Soviet stuff is like that; swap the makings around & they fit right in to the aesthetic, for some reason. :icon_surprised:
-
I have a plan to build one of my B-29/B-50 kits with swept wings and stretched a bit as a development of the Washington, only I'll put Tyne nacelles on it. I was actually thinking of using Britannia wings after seeing photos of B-29's being converted to RAF use in the big Filton hanger.

Approved for parts gathering and on to production
