Arleigh Burke Derivatives
« on: February 12, 2015, 01:54:06 PM »
So I had a couple of ideas about modifying the Burke into a helicopter destroyer like the Japanese shirane class. The only problem at the moment is that I can only build one, so I need a little help deciding because I like both ideas, but only one spare model to work on.

Here are the ideas:
Version 1:

Version 2:

I'm open to suggestions etc.

Both looking fine.
Am thinking top preferable cuz:  larger rear deck can fit a larger chopper like Chinook or whatever as needed

I'd vote for version 1 as well. Larger single flight deck allows for other airframes to land (V-22s maybe?) or allows for a little more wiggle room when coming aboard under less than ideal weather/sea state conditions.

2 looks better but 1 more realistic/probable. Can't wait to see the result as I have a couple of hacked up 1/1250 Spruances and Ticonderogas with a similar idea in mind, i.e. DDH, APD versions, your Burke DDH is going to look great.

Actually, my dilemma is now solved. I found another Burke so I can do both.

Anyway for this build I have chosen a revised version 1, instead of smooshing the superstructure (I was trying to fit it all on the original hull), I just decided to lengthen it:

It'll involve less work and will keep the phalanx pedestal, which I like the look of.

Work will commence in a few days, after I get back home. Looking forward to sleeping in my own bed.

I like it too! Just my $0.02, what if the flight deck were widened on sponsons on each side of the hull? There must be a reason against this as I have not seen this on any ship besides a full blown aircraft carrier.

I had a few more ideas around the Arleigh Burke platform, since I will probably be working on them at the same time it'll be easier if I dump them all in one thread.

I wouldn't know the exact reason, but if I had to guess it would probably be because of practicality. If you only put small sponsons on a small hull, how much more helicoptering can you get into the extra space and if you put large sponsons on, then the support structure might be too close to the waterline and cause speed or stability issues.

Anyway, I finally managed to start the build. Just extended the hull, now I just have to putty and sand it.

I realized it's kinda late to bring it up, but what do you think of this?

Forget about his bow and arrows- why wait until that sparrow has done his deed when I can just bury him right now 'cause I'm sick and tired of hearing why he wants to have his way with the cock robin!?

I had already considered that arrangement, but decided against it.

Progress: Hangar added

Ran into a problem with my hull lengthening. Where styrene meets plastic - on the water line the styrene sticks out little bit causing a conspicuous seam/gap, while its not so noticeable in pictures it will stick out like a sore thumb once I paint it. After a few rounds of putty and sanding, it's still there.

The solution: If you can't fix it, cover it up. I just added some extra hull ribs.

Ready for initial painting.

The PE parts aren't optional, they are integrated into the kit so it was a little daunting for me since my last foray into PE ended in disaster - I still don't know if I'm up to the task of adding handrails (at least they're optional).

Fine building going on.  Hull stretch works so well.
Makes me wanna get back to my two floaties.

Progress on the frigate/lcs:

Now I think about colour scheme. I was going to follow the colour guide and paint it flat grey. The instructions state the tamiya equivalent of medium gunship grey is xf58, but when I went to the hobby shop I found that xf58 is actually olive drab. So that got me thinking about how the ijn painted one or two of their carriers in green angular camo, so I thought I might do the same only in grey and blue.

Started preliminary painting today, was supposed to start on Saturday, but I got sick. Admittedly I didn't put that much effort into the frigate/lcs because I kind of got fed up with all the puttying and sanding, so I used it as a testing ground.

I thought I could just wing it and paint random triangles everywhere, but it didn't turn out like I pictured in my head. Looks like it needs a bit more planning.

Went for a more planned, less busy camo:

due to time constraints, a simple two tone:

Now all I have to do is paint the decks, do a little touch up and they'll be ready for fitting out.

Finished!

DDH:

Weapons:
127mm gun
48 vls cells
2 20mm cannons
4 .50 cal machine guns
NULKA launchers
1 phalanx 1b
1 ram launcher
2 triple torpedo launchers

Features:
AEGIS
Hangar for 4 seahawks (6 maximum)
Large flight deck - aft section used for landings, forward section used as ready area
Small well deck for small boats and towed sonar array

Enhanced Burke:

One of the torpedo launchers was flung off into oblivion when I picked it up, so let's just say its out for repairs or something.

Weapons:
2 127mm guns
144 vls cells
2 20mm cannons
4 .50 cal machine guns
NULKA launchers
1 phalanx 1b
1 ram launcher
2 triple torpedo launchers

Features:
AEGIS
Hangars for 2 seahawks

Frigate/LCS:

Forgot about the hangar doors until after I started painting, so I ended up just drawing them on.

Weapons:
127mm gun
32 vls cells
2 20mm cannons
NULKA launchers
1 phalanx 1b
1 ram launcher
2 triple torpedo launchers
2 quad harpoon launchers

Features:
Phased radar array
Hangars for 2 seahawks

I was initially on the fence about PE parts, but they ended up being quite a nice addition.

Since I needed some ram launchers and phalanxes and I don't really want to buy them, I decided to scratch build and resin cast my own since I need quite a few for future projects.
Version 1:

They're not the best, but they're good enough and I did learn a lot for my second attempt.

Still not up to adding handrails and no numbers yet because I want to induct these into these into the Royal Polygonian Navy and I want to come up with a proper numbering system.

Anyway, yvan eht nioj.
