Quick mock up to make sure I am on the right track. Its awaiting Gloss Coat and then the myriad decals. World Cup is robbing me of bench time.

Thanks Brian!! It makes me go cross eyed sometimes  :-\

This may not look  like much, but after weeks of things getting in the way and endless delays, I was happy to make even small progress when SWMBO and i decaled the fins.

And the next week we continued until:

hooray!! It really fought me even on the last steps, however I got it done!

Lego stands to get the alignment of the lower fins.

Much Appreciated, The Hornet seemed to work out pretty well, and I'm lucky It cooperated. Some decals are "make or break" and this was one of them.

The trick was cutting them up enough!  ;D

I love your model more and more... :-*

Thank you Tophe. Its so great to feedback from everyone, these models take a lot of time to build and have a lot of steps, and although they always leave me satisfied, its nice to hear that others enjoy them as much as I do. I'm going to expand this thread a wee bit, and include some other stuff.

I normally hesitate on this because I start side projects dabble with them and then never work on them again, but its looking like I am making enough progress on this one that its worth showing. I also caught Voodoo fever, and started working on an already built but busted model finished by someone else from evil bay:

Lastly I came up with a concept I'm calling "A Blank Canvas" or (ABC!) I have bought a lot of previously built and finished models from Evilbay. I bought these with the idea that they can be restored which indeed they can... but it will take more time than just starting a new kit. Since I tend to stick to my favorites, I usually have plenty of fresh unstarted ones in the stash so using extra time restoring doesn't make sense. If I want something super detailed I will simply go to the stash and start it right from the finish. So I am resisting the urge to "fix these" and instead    just  build them up, and hit them with primer so I have a "Blank Canvas" for any tips or techniques I want to try. Most of these cockpits are nothing to write home about, I'm not a fan of working on cockpits, and since practicing that is not the goal, most of these ABC models are going to have covered and painted clear parts, I can paint windows on later. So I look forward to posting some pictures in the future, and having these models on Hand to work on tips and techniques and weathering, without having to use a new kit, that would take weeks.

Thank you all again

Voodoo Update (actually did this several weeks ago and just havn't updated!):

New fin drawn up with CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) This actually took many tries for me to be satisfied

Traced onto a spot on some well used thick Styrene sheet

The original plan was to cut off the whole fin and then lots of PSR, reconstruction, eventual dissatisfaction at all that needs to be done, and finally shelving the whole project for possible years, but then I came up with a better plan!

Cut off part of the fin, and then made smaller cuts to make it fit and look more natural. So I was done in an afternoon instead of weeks or even years if my history is anything to go by!

yay!

I then laminated it on each side with another layer of sheet styrene. Sharped eyes will also noticed the little organic curvy notch I added to better blend with the original voodoo tail there toward the bottom, it was far too flat in that part

And sanded it to round the edges.  hello tail fin!

I definitely see it  ;D Thanks Brian  :)

I have been working a lot on things that apply to this thread, but have been very poor about showing those things

changing the wing shape

Gap filling

Canopy has seen better days, no loss in covering it.

Spare drop tank turned into a new spine (why? because I like adding work)

Using tape to keep the contour of the model without worry of the milliput sticking to the model. Milliput will fill all the gaps. (ok, most)  ;)

adding layers to thicken the fin.

adding detail to the wooden eggs that will be engines. Primitive but it seemed to work. Note the lego as a spacer

yay!

First primer.

Huzzah!!! That's an amazing transformation! Those mods appear seamless, especially that lovely curve you added to the wingtips! The engines look great too and I think they'll really compliment the aircraft. Working in mixed media like that never ceases to impress me!

Thanks Brian! The engines may be a bit large, but thats what I am going for. I need to make sure I find a solid way to secure them...

much obliged

After a lot of PSR it was finally time for some Krylon sun yellow:

Spacey Jolly Roger loosely based on Darth Nihilus

from Knights of the old Republic II

Tamiya Camel Yellow on the underside. (from the art work I am going off this could well just be shading, but oh well more color)

Both top and bottom done, masks removed

Touch ups done.

Landing gear made from legos. All in the middle there. I like the idea of no nose gear on sci-fi projects because it looks unconventional

The paintwork just keeps getting better and better, then the landing gear really takes this in an unexpected direction!

I really like it and think it compliments the tiger stripes exceptionally well, Mr Tomcat!
