A Funny Sort of Airship
« on: July 20, 2020, 05:38:51 AM »
Hi All

In addition to his fetish for spats, Brian was also adept at converting a submarine hull or a drop tank into a pretty convincing airship. This is my attempt to emulate this.

No Alt. History on this one I dont know enough about Airships to make it convincing  ;D ;D ;D

So the starting parts:-

by Robomog, on Flickr

I've chosen the biggest droptank I have in the spares box, some smaller random droptanks, tail parts from a Halifax and a couple of old bombs for engines.

The props are a bit big, I may not use them.

New ground for me, not my usual scale, not my usual subject. Interesting to see what happens.

More when it happens..............

Those parts came in a job lot of  spares I bought on evilbay  so I don't really know, but I came to the same conclusion,  matchbox

Hi all

A bit more progress.

by Robomog, on Flickr

The fins have been cut to size and I have retained the rudder detail as it looks quite effective.

All the drop tank has have been ditched in favour of a very battered Skua canopy for the gondola, it's been in my parts stash for years, I never thought I would find a use for it due it being so badly painted, goes to show you should never throw anything away.  ;D. It is shown here with some card inserts to fill up the gaps.

The bombs that will form the engines have been tidied up.. The propellers did prove to be a bit big so I am going to show them as spinning using clear plastic disks

Thanks for looking

Hi All

Flying through this one, the fins and gondola are on.

by Robomog, on Flickr

I have also manufactured the "spinning" props and sourced a couple of bombs. Engine pods next.

More when it happens .........

The building is coming along beautifully!

Now you just need a cool name to go with it :)

Hi all

All major construction done now and will be in the  paint shop as I type.

by Robomog, on Flick
Apologies for the out of focus pic

Hats off to Brian, constructing and lining up the engines was a major and fiddly operation he seemed to get his to line up correctly every time.

Still trying to think of a name, will probably just be a number

Thanks for looking

Hi all

Well, despite all the fiddlies I've finished, the paint job has come out quite well and the line between colours came out straight first time yay !

So I present to you the Vickers Fleet Protector airship concept, designed to perform anti submarine patrols around Scapa Flow. It is armed with two depth bombs and two light cannon. Later research proved that it was totally unsuited for the task. Without a protective shed it would not have survived given the inclement weather of the area.

But it looked good on paper........ ???

The forward rake on the fins is intended, it is not camera lens distortion.

I'm not sure if the fins are a little too large and the propellers a bit close to the gondola, I'll let you decide.

I forgot to take the " money shot" as this is not my usual 1/72 scale. Scale is actually indeterminate  but to give some idea of size I used a UK penny to scribe the propellor disks

Thanks for looking

Wow, that looks really good.

it is difficult to gauge the scale of the finished model compared to the earlier parts pic, so that is a good thing.

Nice work :D

Airship came out really well, is cool  8)

Brian often described what he was starting to build.  I often thought don't think that will come out well.  I was always wrong.  Reminds me of a BdB build.

That is great!

Totally a BDB-like build!

All you need is to come up with a cool name for the airship :)

Great stuff 'Mog  Very Brianesque!

From the front, she looks a bit like a mechanized orca  :D

Large fins and props set close to a gondola ... sure signs of a high-speed patrol dirigible  ;)
