Title: English Electric P.8
Post by: MAT on November 24, 2023, 04:51:53 AM
English Electric P.8

In january 1951 RAF issued the requirement F.155T for for a high altitude, high speed interceptor. Several companies responded to to F.155T. The offer from English Electric was P.8, a development of the Lightning. The first flight was to take place in january 1956 with service entry in april 1959.

My build will be based on a old russian kit (ex-Frog I think) of Lightning F.6 and a lot of pieces from the scrapyard. Paint and the Commonwealth Air Force it serve in will come later, as my thoughts developes in the wasteland of the Jylland Peninsula.

Great subject choice! Area rule, tip rails, and no belly paunch tank! Nice

It would be interesting to know more about this P.8's RB.126 engines ...

Wow ... thanks Greg!

Sounds like this RB.126 would basically have been a supercruise RA.24 derivative available in the late '50s.

So, the RB.126 is basically a go-faster Avon with a mass flow greater than 150 lb/s, higher turbine entry temps, and de Laval CD nozzles. That higher TET makes me wonder if Rolls was applying Conway-style blade cooling to its Avon core?

Delta wing & T-tail ?  Just call me Mr. T.

The fuselage have now lost its belly pack. The light grey piece next to it used to be part of a MiG-23, that lost its swing wing to a Messerschmitt Me P.1102/105 build. Now it will get a new life as the wheel well for the main undercarriage.

The building of the P.8 is slowly going ahead. Being delayed by all the arrangements in connection with the Midwinter celebrations, which in Denmark involves lots of parties with abundance of food and beverages. The two-seat cockpitt and the wheel well for the nose wheel are now in place and the fuselage can finally been glued together.

Nice work, I am interested in this concept as I sort of done something similar

Well done MAT! We see that midvinterfest with its disruptive "parties with abundance of food and beverages" is not slowing you down too much  ;)

Still, such festivities provide good antedotes to what we Anglo-Saxons used to call wintercealde  ;)

Starting to put some area-rulling to the fuselage. It looks quite messy now, but hopefully a lot of PSR give this disorder some resemblace with the P.8.

The P.8 is slowly getting into shape with a new cockpitt and the area rulled aft fuselage. But there is still a lot of PSR ahead. And still no decision on the paint job.

After several rounds of PSR, the P.8 have got a layer of grey, so the uniform surface will reveal any blemishes, that have to be corrected.

The building of the P.8 goes forward. Though I've been hard pressed by the jule (In english X-mas) celebrations, which in addition to the party of dec. 24 also included two days of jule-frokost (X-mas dinners) with lots of food, brewerage and games. The church tried for centuries to stop the fun - but without succes. The danish soul is party-party.
The PSR is almost completed and the wings have now been added to the fuselage. And the moment to decide the paint scheme creeps closer.

The "office" have been furnished and the canopy glued on. I have also started on the next big PSR job - the aft fuselage.

At last - the end of all this seemingly endless PSR. Time to put some paint on the P.8

Decals have just been put on. Now it's time for the last details and of course make up the history. But that will have to wait, as I'm off to Copenhagen to visit my daughters and some grandchildren. And to celebrate a stepdaughter, who have just passed the finale exams in her education as a journalist.

All your careful PSR effort paid off to be fine English Electric P.8 rendition.
Is true to the concept literature and toss in paint job which is something different for Electric Lightnings.

The P.8 is done - at last. My brother is a photo nerd, and he came around the other day with his expensive and fancy camera, and took  pictures of a much better quality, than what I can master with my small pocket camera.
