FMA AeMBp-1 Chocante
« on: January 18, 2015, 03:03:31 PM »
Just a teaser... more and better photos tomorrow:

The FMA AeMBp-1 Chocante was a diminutive two-seat dive bomber designed and built in Argentina.  Designed by Juan Ignacio San Martin, the AeMBp-1 was heavily influenced by Italian design practices as San Martin had received his aeronautical engineering education in Italy.  During his time in Italy, San Martin had apprenticed at Caproni Bergamasca where he worked on converting the Ca 305 into the two-seat AP-1.  On return to Argentina, San Martin based his dive bomber design loosely on the AP-1.  As a result, the AeMBp-1 was the smallest aircraft that could be designed around a single engine, two crew members and a 250 kg bomb.  Smaller bombs could also be carried under the wings, and the wings also mounted two .303 inch machine guns. A third .303 inch machine gun was mounted in the dorsal gunner’s cockpit.
The AeMBp-1 was of all metal construction and was 32 feet long with a wingspan of 34 feet, 10 inches.     Named Chocante (the local name for the skua), 120 AeMBp-1s were built and served both Argentine Army and Naval air arms until 1948.

N.B., AeMBp-1 = "Ae"for "Dirección General de Aerotécnica," M for "militar," Bp for "bombardero en picado" (dive bomber)

Unusual! What basis did you take (if not all scratchbuilt)?

Good eyes, FAAMAN!  It's almost all Kingfisher.  I chopped down the rear fuselage and moved the rear pit forward.  I replaced the tiny Kingfisher engine with the engine and cowling of a Williams Bros B-10, and used a white metal three-bladed prop from the spares stash.  I squared off the wings and tail and moved the tailplanes forward about 1/3 of an inch to try to look a little less Vought-like.  The landing gear main struts are leftover P-51 wing flap sections from an Airfix P-51, and the wheels are from an unknown source (maybe the Kingfisher beaching gear?).  More later (with better pictures).

Here are some more pics of the Chocante, as promised.  Pic 2 shows the scratch-built dive brakes that I didn't mention in the previous post.  Enjoy!

I bet you could fool many with this beauty, Chuck! A totally plausible concept made even more convincing by such a sharp, clean build. Well done!
