Someone built a what-if of this aircraft (Revell Germany kit) and replaced the observation position in the nose with a ball turret that looked rather sensible.  Might have been on WhatIfModelers or another forum.

Yep!  That is the model I was thinking of.  Surprised I was actually able to "visit" that forum without being denied access...

It is quite common for civilian airliners to be turned into MP aircraft (e.g. Comet - Nimrod, Electra - Orion, 737 - P-8), but what if one goes the other way?  What if a commuter airliner is developed from the Bréguet Atlantic?

I have read that the French have used their Atlantics as airborne command posts over Libya and other areas of Africa.

I'd be inclined to seal the weapons bay and trick it out for electronic warfare or possibly AWACS. I think and Ericsson Erieye phased array antenna wouldn't look out of place on an Atlantic.

Oh, I do like the AEW&C/AWACS idea .  One could go the Ericsson Erieye approach or even just the Rotodome style - even just copy/transplant from the E-2 Hawkeye.  Might end up looking a bit like the HAL HS748 AEW:
