La-17, Syria

Developed from the La-15, the La-17 (NATO code "Flossy") offered supersonic performance similar to the Mig-17. Although not as widely used as the Mig, they were used by a number of air forces. Several mideastern nations including Syria and Libya used the Flossy.









The model is the 1/72 Maquette La-176, This was developed from the La-15 to study supersonic performance. In the RW, it never went into production. I initially planned to make this as the real world prototype but the amount of work it would take to make look good in a natural metal finish was excessive.  So I came up with a WHIFF version. Needless to say, as a limited run kit, this one was rather crude.

That looks fantastic, Ed. The paint job and weathering are excellent.

 I have the Condor La-15, and it's a dog.  The model designers had good intentions but just lacked the technology to make a kit that matched their skill. And it's molded in some awful black plastic.

initially, I started scribing the panel lines, because I think that works best on natural metal.  But so many of them got obliterated during the PSR, that I decided to go with a camo scheme.  After the model was painted, I drew them in with a pencil.

I've got an ongoing story that I've written showing connections from some of Tank/Multhopp designs to later designs and I bought the kit because of the connection.  Notice it looks remakably like a FMA IAe 33 Pulqui II, a Kurt Tank design

It's good to see the La-15 progeny get some attention.

I'd like to see someone like Amodel give us a decent La-15 in 1/72, the old Cooperativa kit and its strange black plastic still give me nightmares.

The La-15 and La-17 actually are great Whiffing material being as how the La-15 was in some aspects a superior aircraft to the MiG-15 though the MiG-15 won the day through its less complex nature which made it that bit more practical for mass production.
