1/35 Special Forces figure with Minigun
« on: March 29, 2019, 12:03:26 AM »
Been away from the forums for a while. My father has been in and out of surgery so been back and forth to the doctors the last few weeks. I was also sick for the last two weeks.

Anyway, here is a 1/35 resin figure I got from China. I thought it looked cool holding the minigun. Here is how it comes.

As you can see, the resin barrels were warped so I switched them out with metal ones. The metal ones are way longer than the resin ones but look a 1,000 times better.

The MICH helmet with MTEK face armor came molded uneven so I have to get a new head to replace this one. This one is actually a copy of Live Resin and I have some original Live Resin heads with the MTEK face armor in my stash. These figures were really cheap so I got a few different ones. Turns out, most are copies of Live Resin and Legend.
Here is the one that came with the figure.

Here is the original Live Resin helmet with optional parts on the left and the copy on the right.

The left arm came molded onto the body but the hand was separate. The left hand is molded to the minigun which has a really weird position when mated to the arm.
Here is the weird looking left arm.

I drilled out the end of the left arm and the end of the hand and put in a plastic rod so I could try to reposition the hand to a more natural looking position. You can see the plastic rod between the hand and arm. I will need to fill in with putty and shape it to match the rest of the arm.

Here is the figure holding the minigun, minus the head.

Here it is with the Live Resin helmet.

This is the camo I will be attempting hahahahaha! The camo is the US Army's current version. It is called OCP (Operational Camouflage Pattern). I will be using Vallejo Model Colors and hand painting it.

Looks like you're off to a great start!

I always enjoy figures and watching this one come together is a treat!

Good luck with the camo. Ramba!

I have both those figures sitting on my workspace, too. The Live Resin one is there for a repair job & the YUFAN one for construction. I saw & posted re: the "similarities" a while back. Both are allocated to the same Sci-Fi diorama. I'll be watching your mini-gunner build with interest (although the moulding seems to be cleaner on mine than yours).

Good work! :D

Old Wombat, I just read the post you linked to. Unfortunately at the time I bought them I didn't know they were copies until after I got them but I had gotten a few at the same time. I got these sometime around December 2018 into early January 2019. I haven't gotten anymore since. I won't post anymore if it violates forum policy. Admins feel free to remove this topic.

Yes, my minigunner figure is pretty rough compared to the one they showed in the ad.

I don't see a problem continuing to post your progress on this, Ramba, even though it's not an original kit. You're not selling them or promoting them, just building the kit. Besides, I'm probably not the only one with kits of dodgy provenance and own a few questionable eastern bloc re-pops.

I'm enjoying following along. Your work is always a delight.

Thanks Basher. I haven't gotten much done on the minigunner lately but worked on a different one. This one is a sniper with a Barrett .50cal.

Spring migration is starting very soon in my area so probably won't get much modeling done this month. I will be heading out soon to pursue my other hobby, wildlife photography. I will be looking for migrating birds and other wildlife.

Here are some from 2016 and 2017 taken in my yard. These will actually stay and nest here in the summer.
This one is a Rose-breasted Grosbeak (male) taken in the backyard.

This is a Scarlet Tanager (male) also taken in the backyard. These also stay and nest here in the summer.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird (immature male) on Cardinal Flower from my garden. They also stay all summer long.

Chestnut-sided Warbler (male) from the local park. These nest at the park.

A mother Black Bear and her cubs also in the backyard taken in 2017. They are here year round.

I live in PA in the mountains in the middle of the woods. It is a neighborhood but in the middle of the woods. We live here year round but most neighbors only vacation here 1-2 weeks a year. There is a lot of construction going on the last two years though so less and less wildlife lately. The bear photo was taken in 2017 and I was seeing them almost daily. Last year I didn't see them once because there is heavy construction two roads up from me so the construction drove them away. It is a shame really as I really loved seeing the bears. There is a dry creek that runs along the edge of the property and the bears used to like cooling off in it in the spring when the snow melts and rains come and also in the summer but with the heavy construction, they moved on.

The bear photos were taken from the safety of the house. I opened the window to photograph them. I used a 120-400mm lens at the full 400mm. The photos are also cropped.

Here is the mom getting out the creek along the edge of the property. You can see the water coming off her rear. You can see one of the cubs on the log just behind her rear legs.

Mom and cubs sitting at the edge of the creek before taking a dip.

Cubs climbing a tree on the property after taking a dip in the creek. The one with its back to the camera you can see the fur matted from the water. It is a very shallow creek and is dry most of the year. It fills up in the winter and spring when the snow melts and rains come.

Habitat loss from human encroachment is the biggest threat to most species. And then people buy or build a house in the woods and the bears come back into "their" former home people freak out. Same problem where I live. People want to live in wooded homesites and then complain about the deer and racoons.

I don't freak out about the wildlife, I love it. That's why I moved here. The closest town in any direction is roughly 1/2 hour away. I love the wildlife and partial isolation. The area we live in is also a protected area. It isn't a park or actual sanctuary but the owners of the development protect the wildlife or so they claim but with all the heavy construction lately, it seems they don't care about the wildlife anymore, just how many more homes they can build. When my brother first moved here there were maybe 15 homes total, now there are probably over a two hundred.

The biggest problem with the vacationers that come up here is that they only come for 1-2 weeks a year and when they see the wildlife like the bears, deer and raccoons, they want to feed them which causes problems for the people like me that live here year round. Most of the people that live here year round know how to enjoy the wildlife without interfering with them. We let the wildlife go about their daily business. When I first moved here, the bears would hang out in the creek and nap in the yard but never bother the garbage cans. We never fed them but when the vacationers come up, they feed everything and they got used to people food so then the bears started raiding garbage cans. We lock the garbage cans to prevent them from raiding them but only recently. The people that only vacation here 1-2 weeks a year don't lock their garbage cans but the bears and raccoons go to all the garbage cans now. With the construction lately though, we don't even see the bears anymore. We used to get a lot of Skunks and Ground Hogs too but the heavy construction seems to have scared them off too. We still get a lot of deer and wild turkeys though.

The waterfall in the neighborhood. Not by the house but only 5 minutes away.

Bear about to nap behind the rocks in the backyard.

A couple young deer in the yard hanging out in the snow.

Some deer in the street in front of the house.

Some turkeys in the backyard. There were about 100 or so but some split off and went across the street.

BTW, do any soldiers anywhere actually use a hand held mini gun? Even if you could control the recoil how could you carry enough ammo to be useful? Or is this more of a movie invention?

It's fictional but it looks like they are going for something similar to the one used in the first Predator movie that Jesse Ventura had and also in the Terminator that Arnold used to shoot the cop cars from the office building window.

I read though that there was a prototype 5.56mm minigun version but it still needed to be mounted on either a tripod or vehicle. Maybe that was the one they used in both Predator and Terminator even though they were both hand held. Even at 5.56mm, not sure how they would hold it anyway but even so, both the 7.62 and 5.56mm needs the battery pack but I guess that could be carried in a backpack along with the ammo.

Indeed! And echoing what kerick said, we have neighbours who actually complain about being woken up by Bald Eagle cries! Any time a bear shows up in the lane, they freak completely. Must've been real calm and quiet back there in the Big City, eh.

We had neighbors complain about the bears but the development owners said they are part of living here but then other people started feeding them so we will see what happens next.

We also have Eagles and Hawks. I saw a Hawk catch a Chipmunk and soared way up high then the same Hawk swooped down and caught a snake then soared up way high again. I guess the snake was a more appealing meal because the Hawk dropped the Chipmunk from way up and soared off with the snake. I had a photo of it dropping the Chipmunk and you could see the snake still in its talons but the photo was lost when my computer got fried three years ago. I unfortunately didn't get to save a copy.

Started working on some more of those figures. The heads looked a little small so I removed them and will replace with more appropriately sized heads. Not sure which heads/helmets I will be using but it is between either the Airframe helmet or the MICH helmet with MTEK face armor. Still trying to decide.

Here you can see the figures with the original heads.

Size comparison with Live Resin on the left.

Heads removed.

Once done, they will be sitting atop the Bandai M61A5 MBT. Here they are on the M61A5 without their heads. Positions might change later on. I just posed them there for photo ops.

I got that Bandai M61A5 on sale at Amazon USA over Christmas time. They had them for $60 each right around the last week of December. I cashed in my credit card rewards points and got an Amazon gift card and used that to get the Bandai kit.

Besides the figures, I will be adding a Live Resin Secutor weapons system to the top of the turret. It will sit where the TC hatch is located so there won't be a TC hatch anymore. There is a rear crew access similar to the ones on the Merkava so the crew can enter/exit from there.

Here is the Secutor in place. I will take some other photos later today of the Secutor in place with the figures.

Started practice painting the older BDU camo pattern. Mine is a bit splotchy. There should be smoother demarcation lines but I only have a 3/0 brush. It is too big to get smoother demarcation lines between colors. I definitely need a 4/0 or 5/0 brush. My colors are too bright too especially the sand. It should be more khaki but the khaki I have is actually too dark. I used khaki on the vest, pouches, gloves and boots. My brown is too dark too. It should be slightly lighter. My green is also too bright. Maybe after a flat coat it will dull the colors down a bit.

Here is the figure so far.

BDU camo, you can see the demarcation lines are smooth unlike mine. I will have to pick up some 4/0 and 5/0 brushes to try to clean up the edges.

Don't know what paints you're using but the green of the actual camo looks close to Tamiya Olive Green (XF-58), the tan looks close to Tamiya Buff (XF-57) & the brown looks like a mix (approx. 1:1) of Tamiya NATO Brown (XF-68) & Flat Earth (XF-52).

To tone down or "fade" the colours I'd use a very thin mix of Tamiya Deck Tan (XF-55) misted over from an airbrush, if you have one.

I fixed it. I used the appropriate MM enamels. Here is the redone BDU camo with the MM enamels. Well, the green and the tan are MM enamels. I left the brown as is. It just needs a flat coat now.

Got the head/helmet painted and the skin tone on the arms. Needs some touch ups but the smallest brush I have is a 3/0. I need a little smaller with a finer tip like a 4/0 or 5/0 for some of the finer touch ups. Hoping to pick some up soon so I can finish it. The rifle needs painting as well. When I finish the touch ups and rifle then it will get a flat coat.

Back on track with the minigunner figure. I got the Live Resin 7.62mm sized flexible ammo feed chute. Also got the figure primed and waiting for it to dry to start the camo.

Flexible ammo feed chute and how I hope it will look once painted and attached.

I haven't gotten much done lately. About all I did was switch around the heads/helmets. I used the heads with the skeleton masks molded on. They look more sci fi so will more than likely go with these heads for now.

Here is the one with the minigun.

This one has the Mk.48 Mod 0. It has the same ammo backpack as the one with the minigun.

I got a 1/35 resin diorama base but it is pretty small and can only fit one or two figures. Here it is and I posed a Live Resin figure on it for size comparison.

I also got these two 1/35 desert palm trees hand made by a seller in Thailand. Terrific details on them. I am not affiliated with the seller, I am just a satisfied customer. They come packaged in a plastic bag with the palm fronds pointing up. No instructions on how to bend the fronds but it is basically common sense hahahaha!

The taller of the two is roughly 200mm or 8 inches tall from the package but once the fronds are bent to shape it is roughly 7 to 7.5 inches tall depending on how much you bend the fronds to shape. The height is not counting the insertion peg on the bottom of the trunk.

Here are the fronds bent to shape.

Last photo shows the diorama base with one of the palm trees and a figure.

Like those palms ... & you seem to be having fun putting different weapons & heads on the figures. ;) :D

Thanks! Yeah, I have a hard time deciding which head/helmet and weapons to use. I keep trying different combinations but think I finally decided on the one I want to use.

I haven't worked on the figures in a while. I did do a couple diorama bases though.

The base colors were hand painted with Vallejo Model Color acrylics. I then gave it a clear coat to protect the paint then gave it a wash of dark dirt. After the wash dried I gave it a dusting of MiG sand pigments.

I actually started painting the minigunner figure. Only the khaki so far. Not too sure what camo I am going to do the uniform. I was originally going to do it in the OCP multicam but my painting skills are not even close enough to accomplishing that. I saw some Cross Delta multicam decals that I might try. Gotta be easier than painting it right?

While waiting on the multicam decals to arrive, I was doing some research on USMC gear and came across two photos on the USMC website.

The first photo of the US Marine in the desert MARPAT camo has his radio backpack in the US Army OCP multicam. Interesting combintaion. I have a 1/35 resin figure in a similar pose but with a bigger backpack.

I found a different backpack in my stash that is slightly closer to the one in the multicam. It has extra pouches on the sides though but will work and is close enough for me. The original one was already molded to the figure so I had to cut it off. The new one is test fitted with silly putty holding it on.

The second figure matches the pose in the other photo too so will do it in a similar manner.

Got some of the camo decals today. First two photos are of the desert MARPAT and the last two are of the OCP multicam. The sheets are smaller than expected. Looks like I might need a couple more sheets each.

I didn't get any modeling done today as it was the first sunny day in about 5 days. I photographed a Pileated Woodpecker nest near by. There were 3 chicks and the parents would take turn feeding them. This is the male shown with the 3 chicks.

In my experience with camo decals, you will need a lot of decal softener to get them to conform to the details on the underlying plastic. If you think x amount is enough, double it. Of course, test a small section first. Also, I used small strips and sections of decal; trying to get a large rectangle to conform to a leg or arm will drive you mad.

Thanks for the decaling tips. The decals I have are from Cross Delta. I read they were pretty good laying down but I have no experience with these decals or decaling figures so I will test them as you said. I have to finish priming some more figures first and then also gloss coat them for better decal adhesion. I do have MicroSol and MicroSet as well as Solvaset. Solvaset will be a last resort if necessary. I also read to use a warm QTip and roll it over the creased sections to get the decals to conform better. I got a couple extra sheets coming in case I mess up. Thanks again for the decaling tips.

Not much done lately except for the backpack. The one in the photo that the Marine is carrying is a Thor backpack-mounted counter IED jammer. I found a smaller backpack in my stash closer to size and scratch built the antenna. Not exactly the same but close enough for me.

I am going to give the decals a try pretty soon. I am going to try them on a Legend figure first as this particular figure doesn't have as many creases/folds as some of the other figures I have. The Solvaset will be a last resort and really hoping I won't need it at all.

The figure has been primed for two weeks or more so the primer is well cured by now.

Here it is after receiving a glossy coat. Will let it cure overnight. The vest actually didn't need a gloss coat as it won't get the camo decals. The vest, pouches, boots and gloves will be painted in overall coyote tan.

It took me 4.5 hours just to do the trousers. Roughly used only a 35mm x 35mm square so plenty decals left over to do other figures. I still have the arms to do but they are a lot smaller. Will let the decals cure overnight then give it a gloss coat over them and then a light wash to bring out the pockets and creases. The vest, ammo pouches, gloves, and boots will be painted coyote tan so no camo decals for the torso. The helmet and knee pads I think should be khaki.

It is a very long and tedious job applying the decals. I applied thin strips along the edges of where the seams would be on the trousers but the MARPAT is so fine that the seams just blended right in. Hoping a light wash will bring out some of the creases.

You have more patience than I for this kind of thing.  When I opened up the several Trumpeter figure sets I had acquired and discovered the camouflage pattern decals I packaged them all up and sent them off to someone else to deal with (you are most welcome Frank ).  So good on you for sticking to this and actually making the damned decals work.

Good job on the decals! 4.5 hours seems about right for the first figure. It goes faster if you do two at the same time. Did you have to use the Solvaset? Because the decals Jeff sent me laughed at anything weaker and even then, it took a couple of applications before they surrendered. I used a soft rubber pusher to get the decals to conform to the surface details.

Applying the decals did take quite longer than expected but I think I made it harder than it should have been. While it was tedious, I actually enjoyed the process.

Thanks! No Solvaset was used. I only used the Micro Sol. It did take a couple applications of the Micro Sol for the decals to conform but I brushed it on lightly so I think if I used a little more I probably could have only used one application of the Micro Sol. I did a lot of little strips thinking they would be easier to control and would lay down easier but it just took longer. The Micro Sol helped a lot but next time I think I will try a little bit bigger strips to cut down on the time. I used a cotton swab (Q-Tip) and rolled it over the decals but not right away. I waited a little for the decals to conform so they didn't move around while rolling the swab over them. Will give it a gloss coat tomorrow then let that cure and hen give a light wash to bring out some of the creases and pockets.

That sounds like a good process. Sometimes it doesn't matter if you cut the strips to match the edges of the camo - folds and creases on a regular uniform will disrupt the patterns anyway, so I just cut strips wide enough to cover a leg or arm with 2-4 strips.

For the MARPAT the edges just blended right in. The pattern is so small it didn't matter if I aligned the edges or not.

I just did the trousers of the minigunner in the multicam and with that one you can see the edges if not aligned correctly. The pattern is a bit more noticeable on the multicam even in 1/35 than on the MARPAT.

Finally started decaling the minigunner. I used the Cross Delta multicam decals and the same process as I did with the MARPAT. This one still took as long as the first one. I hope with more experience Iwill be able to do the others a little quicker. I still have the helmet, arms and collar to decal.

The two side by side for camo comparison.

Decaled the helmet, collar and lower rear part of the ammo backpack vest. I still have to paint the vest and pouches and touch up some of the khaki that rubbed off. I also still have to decal the arms.

Decals are done on the minigunner. The arms alone took me another two hours. Total time to decal one figure entirely was roughly eight hours.

I added the NVG and radio antenna. All left to do is wash/weather it, flat coat it and add the ammo feed belt.

BANDAI! :icon_ninja:

Ah, the mighty E.F.G.F. M61A5 Main Battle Tank! Those figures should go well with it.

So... progress on this tank?

[/quote]

No more progress on the Bandai 1/35 M61A5. That is where I left off and haven't worked it in a very long time. I don't know when I will be getting back to it.

I have been working on a few 1/35 figures. I converted some WW2 figures into post apoc. They had the winter clothing already and made it easy for me to add the gas masks. I added some modern Russian weapons. I used German WW2 camo because I liked the camo pattern. They are just fictional post apoc so nothing accurate. They scrounged up whatever they could find from surplus stores or museums or anywhere else they could find anything useful. I am still working on them. They still need some touching up then weathering and then a flat coat.

I am also converting some 1/35 Russian soldier figures into post apoc as well. I think these figures were originally representing late Afghanistan or Georgian conflict. Either way, I added the gas masks on these as well to make them for a post apoc setting. I changed out the arms for different poses. I will also change the weapons. I haven't gotten much done on these. I am still working on the doing the camo on the pants. The camo will be more modern this time. Again, these are post apoc so just having fun converting them.

I used Live Resin LRE-35269 1/35 PMG-2 Russian gas masks. I drilled out the faces from the resin figures then trimmed the gas masks to fit. I still need to add the air hose for the gas masks.

I am using some 1mm O.D. conduit for the air hoses. The conduit crimps very easily so needs extreme care handling it.

Here it is on another post apoc figure I did last year.
