Title: Scale-O-Rama GB Inspiration Thread
Post by: Brian da Basher on January 31, 2019, 04:23:53 AM
Here's where you can come to be inspired or inspire others!

If you've got a past Scale-O-Rama completed project, post it here.

Thank you and have fun!

Here's the model that's shown in the avatar on the main page, something I call the Cumulus. The base kit was the venerable 1/48 Testors/Hawk Curtiss RC floatplane racer which I built as a 1/72 civil transport.

For a bit of extra Scale-O-Rama fun, the decals were mostly from a classic Monogram box-scale Constellation.

Next up is one I built as a gift for a good friend of mine over in France.

The base kit was a 1/72 Revell He-219 that I converted to a 1/144 airliner.

(https://i.postimg.cc/VsSrb6Dq/Tophe-Four-X005.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I flipped the fuselage upside-down which allowed me to re-purpose the ventral gun tray as the cockpit and cabin. I cut and flipped the rear tail again so the curve went upwards. Push-pull engine pods were made from drop-tanks and the spats and props are white-metal Aeroclub aftermarket items.

(https://i.postimg.cc/wxcK25fg/Tophe-Four005.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The decals came from an Airfix Caravelle.

You might remember this more recent bit of Scale-O-Rama using a 1/72 Frog Sea Hawk and the nose of a 1/200 737 to create a 1/144 Navy patrol plane called the Petulant Penguin.

(https://i.postimg.cc/nhf0PNCW/PP-xprog-01.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The decals were mostly spares but the penguin mascot comes from a 1/144 Minicraft Navy C-47.

Here's the first of a couple of fairly recent builds turning a 1/144 Minicraft DC-6 into a 1/72 single-seater. This one is used a bunch of spare parts in different scales to create the Yak-13 Fragger.

(https://i.postimg.cc/VNvwJSmn/Fragger-xprod-001.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The new tail feathers came from a 1/144 Arifix 737 and the canopy from a 1/72 Mosquito. The wings came in a box of spares a good friend sent me (thanks a million, Frank!).

Here's the other build converting a 1/144 Minicraft DC-6 into a 1/72 wonder. This is the un-famous U.S. Navy attack plane called the Martin Mugger.

(https://i.postimg.cc/9M1yJNsv/Mugger-xprog-03.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The wings, cowling and engine came from a 1/48 Hs-129. The prop was from a 1/72 P-36 and the canopy was a 1/72 vac for a Bearcat.

(https://i.postimg.cc/6QpRbNNt/Mugger-005.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The bombs were left-over from a 1/72 B-10.

Offering SBDJ Dauntless II as scaleorama example that is more covert than overt.  Still,,, three scales are involved.
1/72 SBD and Meteor as core part of SBDJ.
1/48 Me-262 tail wings.
1/100 A-10 compressor blades for front of jet engines.
Was mix of parts that worked.  Not built from get go to be scaleorama.
Sometimes a scaleorama happens by convenience not by intent to be scaleorama.

That's one of my all-time favorites of yours and it would certainly meet the criteria of Scale-O-Rama!

Here's one I almost forgot, a 1/72 Airfix Walrus converted into a 1/144 flying boat airliner called the Bayleen.

(https://i.postimg.cc/nh9vvZ13/Stork-prog001.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The wings & horiz stabs were swiped from a 1/144 Minicraft B-24 and given replacement engines and cowlings.

(https://i.postimg.cc/qvH75TTb/Bayleen006.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The livery was from a box-scale Monogram Connie.

(https://i.postimg.cc/PJmqt3bz/Bayleen004.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Don't be surprised if I dig up a couple more. It's been too cold for modeling so I've been going through pics.

Brian, all of your builds shown here are beautiful but the French airliner is my favourite.
You have a fantastic eye in seeing planes that do not exist even through kits of different scales.

Some people are prewired to easily play musical instruments, or paint box art, do nuclear physics.
Brian is prewired to readily visualize multi-scale parts as one aircraft.

I thought this would be a toughy for me but then ------

This has parts from five different kits to make a 1/72 model from 1/72 and 1/100 parts (top pic) and compared to a 1/72 F-15E (bottom pic)

Oh my now that's one sleek, fast beauty there Robert!

That's an impressive use across two very diverse scales indeed!

Thanks Brian, it's my 'Alternative Harrier Replacement' project but not an alternative to the F-35.  It is a VSTOL. I'll try to get it finished in this years 'Clear your Workbench' GB

I'll have to keep an eye out for your VSTOL. If that way cool vectored thrust is any indication, that's gonna be one to watch!

Many thanks for that, Mr Kitnut!

I dug up a couple of other oldies, first up is the 1/144 Blackburn Blackie nuclear strike bomber.

The fuselage is a 1/700 sub hull and the wings/tail feathers come from a 1/72 MiG-21. The engines are from an antique box-scale B-36.

I'm a little embarrassed I forgot this one since I just built it a few months back. I used the classic 1/48 Hawk Laird Solution racer with a P-36 prop and P-40 wheels & canopy to create a 1/72 Curtiss Super Sparrow Hawk.

Thanks one and all for your input and inspiration!

Let me see if I can get this to show up. Win 10 is a little peculiar about sharing pictures...
AH, good. Testors 1/48 GeeBee converted to a 1/144 airliner.

Not my best paint job, but I was a little pleased with the overall result.

Dr. all I'm seeing it a no entry sign on a little white square for both. But looking at the second pic code (I went into your post using the 'Quote' feature, the second pic had nothing in between the  'bracketimgbracket' and 'bracket/imgbracket'

But I seem to remember reading on google news that farcebook isn't linking photos anymore ---

That was one of the sweetest Scale-O-Ramas to come along in quite a while!
