2017 Group Build Calendar
« on: January 25, 2017, 04:06:26 AM »
Guys,

Please find below the proposed BG calendar for this year.

1 Feb - 31 Mar:  Floaty GB - Mod:  Artoor_K
1 Apr - 31 May: Red Star Soviet GB - Mod:  Comrade LemonJello
1 Jun - 31 July:  Racing Theme GB - e.g. Reno racers, F1 cars etc etc - Mod:  JCF - being done as the Annual Non-Military GB this year
1 Aug - 30 Sep:  Retro futuristic GB - Mod: taiidantomcat
1 Oct - 30 Nov: Drone/UAV/unmanned whatever GB - Mod:  GTX_Admin
1 Dec - 31 Jan:  TBA...

Note that I have had to drop our the annual Clear your workbenches GB (for now).  If you want me to reinstate it we could perhaps drop out the annual "non-military" GB on the basis that we have something similar in the Racing Theme GB instead.  If I dd this, we would slide everything from mid year forward and then slot the Clear your workbenches GB in at the end.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Volunteers for GM mods also welcomed.

I would be cool with moving the racers to the civilian category. I can moderate but only the back half of the year. Hoping retro futurism GB or unmanned?

Maybe weaver can do the Russkie GBU here too?  O0

I'll toss my two bitcoins out there:

If there's enough interest in keeping the calendar as posted, an option would be to run the "Clear Your Workbench" GB concurrently with the Racing GB or staggered by a month to straddle the holiday/new year/1st GB of 2018 period.  I don't have any problem if we dropped the "Clear Your Workbench" for 2017.  If I were to be held to one answer I'd go with moving the Racing GB to the Civilian/Non-military spot and adding back in the Clear Your Workbench year ender.

Looking at the coming year, I'd be better able to moderate one of the early GBs - it's looking as though summer/fall of 2017 are going to be pretty hectic for House LemonJello.

In a show of comradely good fellowship, I can mod the Red Star/Soviet GB if there are no other takers. Otherwise, I have to pass until the Racing Theme GB's time period.

Will be happy to mod the Non-Military GB if no one else is interested.

Here's another vote for combining the Non-Military and Racing GBs if that's still under consideration.

I'd moderate the racing GB, and why not let Clear Your Workbench run
as an open-ended GB? Don't end the current version, just let it go
in perpetuity as an informal GB that can be entered/dropped out of
at will.

I'd make an attempt at the racing GB but not if it's mixed up with another GB. And I like the idea of an 'open-end' clear your bench GB.

Mainly because of what happened to me during this years GB, both me and the missus got sick with a flu virus , I've had it for three weeks already and after the first week both of us ended up in the hospital because we couldn't look after each other (and mrs kitnut had the flu shot, I didn't and she's worse off than I am). I've just haven't had the mojo to get back to it yet. Consequently, nothing has got done since around Christmas and I wanted to finish at least the project I'm working on.

That really makes sense, an open ended clear your bench, or even a concurrent quarterly clear your bench to accommodate the projects that didn't quite get finished for the other GBs (I still have a KGV BBG conversion I started for a Floaty build about four years ago, and a Tartar/Seaking Type 42 from two years ago too).

Guys, I don't get the idea of an "open ended clear your workbench", especially if it is running in the background to other GBs etc.  Isn't that just normal modelling?   ???  The purpose behind the Clear Your Workbench GB was to provide a specific focussed period to clear our old and half completed builds.  I simply fail to see ho that occurs if we have it running all the time in the background.

Well, it hasn't exactly resulted in a plethora of entries or motivation.   ;D

My thoughts for having it open-ended is it gives folks some place to
put things that have been languishing without reopening dead threads
that may actually live on other forums.

I'm with Greg on the idea of an open-ended "Clear your workbench" GB (which is generally considered a Themed Build). However, I wonder if it wouldn't be a good starting GB, maybe a touch shorter than the others, to clear away the unfinished stuff from the previous year.

My problem is GB's that run over the Christmas/New Year period, when many of us have to pack our stuff away for a couple or three weeks before being able to get back into modelling. I'd be happier if the GB season ran from mid-January to mid-December, with a month's hiatus (say between December 15 & January 15?), because getting the mojo back can be a real struggle half-way through a GB build (See previous paragraph).

I, also, think that the Racing GB & Civvie GB could easily be rolled into one GB, with the possibility of separate votes if there are enough entries in both sub-categories.

OK, if not an open-ended CYB GB, howabout a 'Hangar Queens'* sub-board under
Current Projects for languishing builds, regardless of forum of origin, and especially
those old pre-internet builds living on the back of a shelf or in a box in the basement/
attic/loft?

*While using the name 'Hangar Queens' because that's a common term,
it would include any 'Shipyard/Factory/Workshop/Backyard etc. Queens'
folk want to include.

How about instead of a clear your bench GB we have a monthly poll of submitted, non GB, projects each month or quarter?  i.e. such at the regular contributions a number of you make regularly that don't fit in GBs.

Maybe a physical model, profile and story of the month or quarter award?

Ok folks, I have done some tweaks to the calendar.

  • The Annual Non-Military GB is now the Racing GB for this year at least.  Thanks Jon for volunteering to moderate..  I hope to see lot's of brightly coloured entries
  • The final GB of the year (typically the annual clear your workbenches GB) is left blank at this stage pending further thought/consideration of alternatives/tallying up up bribes.  Maybe, it will be left for a few months before a decision is announced.  Maybe we will even have a vote on it later in the year...
