Hello...
I've been working on profiles and decals recently with Spot On Designs/Resins. Www.spotondesigns.info (http://Www.spotondesigns.info).
I've enjoyed it that much that I'm branching into decals and I'm really interested in doing those oddities and obscure ones that are really hard to find.
I'd really appreciate it if you could help me with my research.
If you had a wish list for decals, what would they be? What scale, colour references, etc
Please be as nerdy and obscure as possible, you'll find no judgement here, lol.
I appreciate your help.
Many thanks
Karen (Chickadee) McAllister

Oh, where to start...
Thanks for doing this Karen. BTW I'm the "Carl". ;)
This post will 100% guaranteed get me kicked of the forum and maybe the planet too but 1/72 is a good scale ... :-X
Anything 1940-50-60s RCN/RCAF. For example something similar this OOP helo sheet. Do not need exact A/C serials but the pieces to build one up.
Or two+three or three+three Air Force serial numbers. For example 101xxx was used by Voodoos, 104xxx by Starfighters, 107xxx by the Argus etc.
So how about unused ranges like 90-99xxx, 100xxx, 102xxx, 103xxx, 105xxx, 106xxx, 108xxx and so on. Xtradecal already did this using 109xxx for the TSR2.

You cannot have enough RCAF/CAF Lightning bolts. If you need some data/images, I have quite a few books on this subject.
And finally maybe something space related. IE USAF "Space Command" or RAF "Space Force" decals for the RAE. OR.9001 “SPACE FIGHTER”.

Maybe not nerdy, but not something many would know about or remember, markings for Chicago Helicopter Airways in 1/72 for various Sikorsky products (real life) and various whif projects (V-107, civil V-22, etc.).
-
Not really that nerdy, but definitely hard to find, and perfect for a certain subset of Whif world: small air forces generic markings on 1/72; especially Latin America
-
Picture reminds me of flat earth research.

Hi Chickadee
I've always been looking for generic Thunderbirds/International Rescue decals in 1/72 scale so that I can reproduce some of Claves profiles.
Too nerdy ?

Hmmm. I shall consult with my guru of all things nerdy and get back to you.

Thinking on it, I'd like to see decals that would allow me to model aircraft in Canadian service that were not - F-105 and F-106 immediately come to mind,
-
I would like to see 2 different series on classic/historic subjects: ancient flgs and coat of arms. In my opinion, wargamers will be interested in this kind of decals.
If you do not mind I would like to send you a PM in order to clarify.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Carl, I've actually been drafting the OR.9001 and pyramid decals, so they should be available shortly.
You may also see some of the Canadian ones you mentioned. I'll keep you posted

Allegheny Airlines in 1/144 would be a godsend. I found one source a long time ago but I think they went out of business.
I'd also like to see 1/72 scale markings for smaller countries which would be great for whiffs. Africa and Pacific island countries are especially hard for me to find.
Roundels of the World is a great research resource:

Thanks for asking and may you have every success!

Now that there are good 1/144 scale kits of the Hunter (Mark I Models does both singe- and two-seaters and there's already a conversion for the early wing iwt the straight leading edge), I'd love to see decals in that scale for all the various users.

Some "what if" decals for BAC Concorde in 1/144 scale
Pan Am
Virgin
Quantas
Air New Zealand
Braniff
Air Canada
You get the picture.
I know there are some sets available at around $20 US which is acceptable but they are charging extortionate prices to ship to EU at around $20 - 30 US for something that can be slipped into a reinforced envelope and posted.
Anyway just a thought

Ah! and another thing, lettering for pre-war civilian aircraft circia 1920 - 1930 such as that applied to tiger months and the like.
Both the large letters that are applied on the top and bottom wings plus the smaller fuselage serial numbers. The civilian market generally and light aircraft specifically are very under represented in the model world so would be appropriate for a number of scales although my interest is 1/72.
Does any body else share this view ?

This is something that I am interested, Mog, thank you for your suggestion.
There are a lot of excellent suggestions here, please, keep them coming in. At present I'm mainly looking at aircraft, just to get started, but there is potential to move into other areas too.
I really appreciate your support and encouragement.

Seconded...but in 1/72

With the Revell 1/72 C-54/DC-4, you might consider doing the Santa Fe Air Frieght markings they flew in for the short time before the ICC shutdown that effort by the Santa Fe railroad. Shame, too, because the scgeme was derived from the "war bonnet" scheme used on their diesel-electric locomotives and was quite colorful. That opens a very interesting whif subject of other railroads similarly going into the air frieght business and adapting their first-generatin diesel-electric color schemes to their aircraft; there are some gorgeous schemes that could be adapted.
-
Do you have any images or references for this?
You have my interest

Google "Santa Fe Skyway" for what images are there (a lot of separating the wheat from the chaff). I'll send what I've managed to find (including a couple of a model done of it). I'm ordering a copy of the ATSF Historical Society's magazine with articles on the short-lived operation (only a few years 'til the ICC shut them down) and on modeling their aircraft. Apparently the Southern Pacific in California tried a passenger airline and that has potential for some whif possibilities
-
I think I could develop whif schemes for at least some railroads (Southern Pacific and Pennsylvania Railroad come to mind first) if you were interested.
-
Excellent, will check that out. I have noticed that there were a few references when researching Scottish aviation as well.
Thanks again

Yip, this is interesting. I've à couple of projects underway but this sounds like it has some possibilities..
Thanks Mog

I've since done a bit more digging, Santa Fe Skyways operated three DC-3/C-47 aircraft and four DC-4/C-54 aircraft. More information as I get/find it.

Also on the Concorde theme, how about some for the proposed RAF bomber variant

I Like the low vis stars and bars and any other WWII items ie tail markings.

Well, it seems that decals for Santa Fe Skyways already exist from Vintage Flyer Decals. Interesting whif would be to extend the concept beyond the DC-3/C-47 and DC-4/C-54 to other aircraft they might have operated if they had continued. Beyond that, there are several whif possibilities for airline affiliates of other railroads if you're interested.
On a second look-thru, Vintage Flyer does one of three C-47s and one of four C-54s; it should be possible to do decal sets for the remaining aircraft. One set for the C-47s and another for the C-54s with the decals set up so one complete aircraft can be made but with the necessary differentiators (name, NC number) for all the ones VF does not cover.
-
This may be a bit too niche but some alternative decals for the p-63 Kingcobra would be nice, particularly the Pinball target aircraft
EDIT: this is for 1/72 scale they are already available in 1/48 scale.
-
1/72 Scale Requests:
- Regia Aeronautica Italia (RAI) & Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana Standard Insignia Markings (SKY & Tauro Model Decal Sets are getting harder to come by)
- Minor Axis Air Forces Standard Insignia Markings (They're also getting harder to come by)
- Pre & WWII Armée de l'Air Française Standard Insignia With Aircraft Type & Data Rudder Markings (They're seeming always hard to come by!)
- Heinkel 219 Standard Insignia WITH Swastikas, Aircraft Data Details, Unit Markings (Would be nice to have them as "All On One Or Two" decal sheets)
They're others but these I'd like to have over the next few years will be modeling. WWII Armée de l'Air Française Unit Markings are harder-times-five to come by for all aircraft types particularly the Amiot 143, would be nice if they were available over the next few years so could build a limited collection of Battle Of France subjects. It also be nice if where decal sheets for the Belgian, Dutch & Norwegian air forces well as those of the Baltic States before & when they were invaded during WWII, Profile Publications monographs in particular were good about depicting them. I'd also be game for decals of former Vichy Air Force aircraft in service with other Axis powers RAI Dewoitine 520s in particular, would like to build at least one model in RAI livery.
