Luftwaffe Hawker Siddeley-Dornier Harrier GR.1B
« on: February 03, 2020, 07:14:22 AM »
Hi all,
This is a build I’ve been thinking about for a long time – what if the West Germans had stuck with the Kestrel Tripartite Test Squadron and Dornier had licence-built Harriers for the Luftwaffe?

This build was made possible by the generous gift of an ESCI 1/72 AV-8A from a member of another forum, with decals scrounged from a Heller 1/72 Fouga Magister and a Revell 1/72 Eurofighter (stencils are the original ESCI). The bomb and SNEB pods came from my spares, otherwise it’s OOB.

This is the Hawker Siddeley-Dornier Harrier GR.1B, marketed internationally by HS as the Mk.20. I hope you like this little trip into alternate history!

Camo colors pattern work super well.  Sorta hides right there as picture is taken.  Swell build.

Beautiful!!  From a reality where the Hawker Siddeley-Breguet-Dornier-Aermacchi-Northrop consortium built Harriers for the NATO air forces and other NATO air arms (USMC, for example).

Thank you everyone! For a while I thought an early Harrier in an Alpha Jet-inspired scheme could be worth doing. And I'm very pleased with the result!

No, in my reality it was the US Army rather than Marines  :P

Perhaps as AV-6Bs rather than AV-8As?  *chuckle* I could see the reaction if the USMC decided to follow the US Army's lead on this.  It's tempting to apply some OV-1 decals to a Harrier just to get a reaction.

For the record, after looking at various Alpha Jet kit instuctions online I used Tamiya XF-63 German Grey and Gunze H303 FS34102 for the camo.

I do remember agonising over the designation before sticking with -8A. Speaking of OV-1 decals, a kind soul at another forum just sent me some to go with the Fiat G.91 I received recently...

This is a should-have-been!

And that really does give it an Alpha Jet vibe! (Now there's an improbable separated-at-birth pair!) Great build
