Fairey Bybon HC(A).4
« on: February 29, 2012, 07:42:24 AM »
So here`s my next project for a competition on another forum. Picked up this 1/78 scale Rotodyne in the MZ sale for this particular comp with the view to turn it into one of the 20 or so examples that the RAF were expected to order.

I picked the name Bybon after a famous ancient, (early 6th century BC), Greek weight lifter. Felt that this name fell in line with the early 60`s era and I`m gonna see if I can convince you that this would have been the aircraft type chosen by the RAF over the Chinook.

The finish will be of an example in the mid to late 80`s which would of had a few `mods` along the way including an attack capability.

Anyway, I would have loved to have given you all a full run down and review of the kit that you get out of the box, but as you can see, once the spruces were removed most of the kit was still in the box......

I`m also going to have to do a little jiggery pockery to the inside of the cabin to bring it up to a military configeration.......,

..... but I still like the idea of keeping the `crapper` in place.....

More updates as and when.

What ever you do in the way of mods, do not remove part 19. The crew is counting on that being there.  ;D

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

Most interesting.  It makes for quite the comparison with the Airfix kit of the same subject.

So here`s my next project for a competition on another forum.

It would still be eligible for the GB currently underway here if you wanted to enter it.

Hi TC:

John aka Maverick did these profiles for me. Maybe he will do one for you?

Good point - whatever you do, retain critical part #19.
Have a Rotodyne in the stash.  Couple of options when building it.  Gunship (i.e. AC-130).  Attack/cargo-troop with Cobra like 20-25mm nose turret, maybe a 30cal turret (early Cobra style) on each side or side doors to fire thru.  Two hard points on each wing.  Rear doors are for cargo and troops.  Is anoher thing on like to do bash list.

Thanks all for the comments. Unfortunately, part 19 has been trown in, if you pardon the pun, the crapper as it would have got in the way if you wanted to load a jeep or something.

I`ve been informed that the middle vertical tail stabalizer is all wrong on this and the Airfix kit. The next 3 pics shown what I mean I hope. First one is how the model is designed to look with that strange angle. Neither in flight or shut down on the ground?? The 2nd is the middle vertical fin in the correct `in flight` angle going `straight up`, while the 3rd is the angle I`ll go for when the aircraft is shut down on the ground.

Did a little bit more last night as the rest of the pictures show. Have to say I`m having fun with this and in a strange twist, it`s because I have to hunt down the bits in the box that have broken away from the sprue. Feels more like I`m `making` this model rather than just putting partss together, if that makes sense? Perhaps I just need to get out more??

Have the house to myself today so given the choice of chores laid outby SWMBO or working on the Bybon, I have for all intents and purposes committed `suicide` by choosing to work on the Bybon.  >:(

Looking to get the inside completed today and here`s where Im at.

The seating configuartion was been sorted and left some space at the rear for any Jeep type vehicle or artillery piece that may be carried into combat.

Also sorted out the frame that holds the main rotor in place.

The ceiling was fitted and the two half`s have been glued together. Waiting for that to dry and then it`s out with some filler to correct a couple of minor gaps.

Last photo from me on this one now before I post the `reveal` shots as I don`t want to spoil the surprise. You wil have to forgive the quality of the photo as it was taken very early this morning and needed the flash.

Now I know I said that the next update would be the reveal, however as with all things, life has got in the way. So here`s where I`m at with plenty more to do.

That's great.  I think that's the best Rotodyne model I've ever seen!

Thanks,
