Title: Late Joining the GB with a DH Vortex
Post by: ed s on March 04, 2012, 12:52:26 PM
Just recently signed on to this forum. So here we are, half way through the first group build. I think I'll participate anyway.

So I'll start with an old Frog 1/72 Sea Venom. A friend gave me this and he had already started some assembly. The tail booms were already broken off. Which is fine, I have other plans for them. I found that the wing tips and fuel tanks would be useful on another model I'm working on, so they got cut off. Now, what to do with what's left. So this morning,  I cut the wings off. I found some 1/48 Me-109 wings and have now mated them with the Venom fuselage. The result being a flying wing fighter, the DH Vortex.  The easy part is done, now to get the PSR started.

This photo shows the basic parts of the kit after the initial surgery.

This photo shows the new wings attached. Not shown are the brass rods that go through the fuselage to hold the wings in place.

to be continued.

What they said-nice to know I'm not the only one getting in late ;D . I noramlly don't like rounded wingtips
on jets, but with the nose cap in place, and the generally curvy lines of the Sea Venom, I think this is going
 to be a winner.

Making some progress.

Here it is during the initial PSR cycle. I filled in all the Me-109 panel lines (way out of scale for a 1/72 jet).

Here it is ready for a coat of Mr Surfacer. Notice that vertical tails have been attached.

And here it is with the first coat of Mr Surfacer. After this dries, then a few quick touchups with putty to correct any small defects.

Ed, That's looking like a smooth finish! What I love about your builds is that they seem to progress nicely, then BAM! you bring it all together and the end result is stunning and always more than I was expecting.

Well put! Plus Ed gives us a lot of models to see that with!

Here we go.

Here is the Vortex with some paint on it. Standard RAF 50's fighter scheme.

And here it is with some decals on it. Taken from a Modeldecal Meteor NF sheet.

Following flights with the DH Swallow, the RAF decided to go with a flying wing/tailless fighter as it's next all weather/night fighter. The result was the DH Vortex NF.3. Commonly called the "Pregnant Pig" by it's crews in reference to it's less than stellar flying qualities along with the large belly tank for fuel. Although never a major success, the Vortex flew with the RAF until replaced by the EE Lightnings.

As you can see, I opted for a wheels up configuration rather than mess with scratchbuilding wheel wells on a short notice GB.
