Sturm Mecha finished
« on: June 13, 2012, 06:27:10 AM »
Gaso.Line 1/48. I replaced the long 88 that came with the kit,and used a 1/35 75mm barrel to simulate a 105 howitzer. I added my own grab handles.

Did you thinked about giving it deployable,, telescopic tail for comensation of recoil during shooting form static position? It would be then look more unusual, and... asa kangaroo,  or T-Rex.

Not until you said something. Hmmmmmmm. I wonder what I could use to build that.

Thanks everyone. :icon_music: I am thinking of adding a recoil spade for lack of a better term. I am at a loss as to what to make the actual spade from. The arm holder for it I can use tubing.

Could the 'recoil spade' be something like a hydraulic jack? I'm thinking of vertical tubing mounted in the the centre of the rear (engine?) plate. The spade foot could drop by gravity (for speed during an engagement) then retract hydraulically to reposition for another shot or get the mecha underway again.

Yes. But as far as the part that comes into contact with the ground,I am at a loss. I am back on the road again as a truck driver. Hopefully I can get to a hobby shop soon. The tubing is no problem. The spade foot would need to move around a bit(not on the model) to try and match the countors of the ground it will be on.

I was thinking of maybe using a 1/35 81mm mortar base plate.

That sounds promising. As you said, accommodating terrain might be tricky. Some kind of ball-and-socket joint perhaps?

Exactly what I was thinking. 8) Tomorrow,I should be able to post a pic of a mockup. Hopefully,I can get to a hobby shop real soon.

Agree, some sort of recoil spade would be prudent to preclude Sturm Mecha falling and can't get up.
Feature to consider (if you had part available) is M-48/60 machine gun turret on top.
Congrats on another creative build.   :)

Thanks Finsrin. :) I do not have any 1/48 M48/M60 machine gun turrets. There will be a machine gun added that goes in between the legs.

This is just a quick mockup of a recoil spade. This is way over scale.
-That is a one spade version.

In this pic,I have circled the areas where I may add a two legged recoil spade. I have some 1/16 inch outer diameter rod, that is hollow on the inside,I may be able to insert some .020. inch rod on the inside of it.

This is just a quick mockup of a recoil spade.

I like it!  I guess twin spades would be more stable. But damn practicality! A single, big-honkin' spade just sounds cooler  :)

Thanks. :)

Right now,the project is on hold,as I have not been able to swing by a hobby shop. I looked in a craft section at a Wal Mart, but they don't have the stuff I need. :o

Another mockup of the spade. The red putty is over a one cent piece. The red rod is a little too thick for the bead I am using as the ball mount.

Looking good! It would give the stability you're wanting when firing but appears as if it would be fairly compact when stowed for travel.  :)

Thanks Apophenia. I was hoping to get to a hobby shop for better looking materials, but no luck.

I like that you found another use for pennies besides giving a model scale or taking down to the coin-O-matic down at the supermarket, Zod!

Love the detail you added with the two-piece strut and the ball on the end.
