Title: Scratch built Waverley Paddle steamer
Post by: kpnuts on December 07, 2013, 04:13:47 AM
hi all thought i would post some pics of my finished model of the Waverley Paddle steamer unfortunatley i no longer have her i sold her to a retired sailor who used to work on her but i loved creating her and thought she was a beautiful ship.DSCF1270 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/111130827@N03/11313621813/#)

she is the only paddle steamer still in service and only then because she was sold to the paddle steamer preservation society for £1.00

so what do you think.

I've sailed on the 1/1 scale version a couple of times. Once from Weston-Super-Mare down to Ilfracombe and back to Penarth, and then another time on the same trip but sailing from Lydney Dock, about 2 miles from my house! :)

Looking down into the engine room under way was awesome, the paddles have some ENORMOUS cranks driving them.

If I did it to the same scale I would need to knock a few walls down (I did once make a fundamental mistake in size)
When I was a young lad living at home I built a mississippi stern wheeler the Robert E Lee to be exact she was so large I could not get her out of my room and down the stairs when complete (she was 8'6") when complete. Never made that mistake again.

UGH!

Been there. My PT boat backed away from the launching point, turned into the lake... and snapped both universal joints as I accelerated away. a day of sailing reduced to $75 in repairs in seconds. :(
