My 1/350 RAN, so far.
« on: January 05, 2018, 11:37:18 AM »
Been doing a clean-up & tidy of my stash & modelling equipment & noticed I'm collecting a decent little navy in 1/350.

For ca. 1960-1980
USS Intrepid (angled deck Essex-class)
RMS Prinz Eugen (1945)
HMAS Vampire (1959 Daring-class)

For ca. 2000-2018
USS The Sullivans (Arleigh Burke-class)
USS Fort Worth (Freedom-class littoral combat ship)
Tarantul III (Soviet/Russian missile corvette)

They'll all be modified to varying degrees for RAN/RAN Coast Guard service.

Good deal.    Valid build concepts.
Clean-up & tidy of my stash & modelling equipment and garage mess always yields surprises.
Have quite a few 1/350.  Will build as either 1/72 or as 1/700 mega ships depending on kit.

 ;D ;D ;D

Not those two, they'll be plain ol' RAN.

So far, the only one I'm definitely looking at for the RANCG is the Tarantul III but the Fort Worth is edging in there, too.

..... Which means I'd better find a couple more modern ships for the RAN & maybe something older for the RANCG (arm of service commissioned ca. 1950-1960).

Ex RAN River/Bay class frigates could be a good fit for the coast guard.  There is a 1/350 USS Tacoma as well as 1/700 Rivers available.

My dream modern RAN consists of several identical task forces (five with ships for eight to support the maintenance and sustainment cycle), each consisting of a DDH, DDG and DD, with sufficient available OCV/Corvettes to be attached for support.  This would consist of Hyuga / Izumo type DDH, a Hobart or Burke type DDG and a modified Zumwalt DD (perhaps even CG version).  There would also be an amphibious group sustaining a deployable squadron of one LHD/LHA. an LPD and an LSD, plus a seabase, several dual role AKE/AORs, and heavy landing ships.  One SSN and one SSG flotilla as well.

I was thinking River/Leander for a moment there (which makes as much sense as anything in the 1960-1980 era) but old WW2 Bay-class frigates &/or Bathurst-class corvettes wouldn't be a bad fit into the early 1960's, with, maybe, the Battle-class destroyers, HMAShips ANZAC & Tobruk being converted for the role in the mid-1960's (Though where I'd get 1/350 models of any of them I have no idea!).

Actually, using a Tacoma kit & replacing all the above with a modified 1/350 Tribal-class destroyer is do-able! :D
