Title: S.P.S. Ma'am Eater
Post by: Dr. YoKai on March 22, 2012, 11:05:03 AM
or, an extended prologue to the history of the Sekrit Yo Navy. The Science Pirate Syndicate was founded in in 1875 by Helene Adler,
Miguelito Brainerd, Lucrezia Yo, and Deren Land Rev. Ullrich Willmanarth. Their first vessel was built in Cuba between 1875-1877, and was terrorizing  the Carribean and Gulf of Mexico not long after.  Other ships and boats were added in short order, and the Ma'am Eater  ( built from plans stolen from a group of Confederate expatriates, based on a series of Confederate Ironclads from the late unpleasentness ) was retired in 1880

This is the older Lone Star models kit of the CSS Albermarle, which I purchased in the 'ninteies, and started six or seven years ago-
My zeal led to some oversanding and a poor match on the hull halves. While working on another steam punk project , I had a minor
brainstorm while looking at some of the Evergreen angle iron I'd bought, and here's the start. Since its hardly punked out
by doubling the stacks ( though it certainly needed the bigger engines they imply ) its going to be a hydrofoil...
I'll be basing the foils on the earliest intentional design for a hydrofoil, from 1869.

As shown here ( top of page ) (http://www.foils.org/gallery/early.htm)

The more I look at that design, the more I think that you could have gone two ways:

The more I look at that design, the more I think that you could have gone two ways:

  • The way you have, and do it as a steampunk styled creation, or
  • an ultra modern stealth ship.

Interesting that how it looks now, you can proceed in either of those two opposite directions and be valid.  Going modern; Ma'am Eater can be PT boat size with the top square having stealth finish (F-117) and be bullet proof like windows as at many banks.  A canopy of sorts with driver in chair using high tech controls.  Squares on fore-aft decks can be for retractable 20-25-30mm automatic cannons or turrets of stealthy looking shape.  Ports on sides of deck house can be multipurpose for more guns-cannons, small torpedoes, smoke laying, Seal team snipers, lasers (chemical or engine powered, etc.....
Or,,, can be built as all the way up to cruiser size with verticle launch missile batteries fore-aft.....
Amazingly flexible build possibilities from this point on.

Well, she's not going to be finished by the deadline. And as Greg was good enough to let me include it in the first place, I won't
be completely gauche and ask for an extension.  :-[ Still, a little progess, and I hope to have her in colors before the middle of April.
Here's how she looks with the finalized funnel arrangement and foils in place.

If you had asked me a couple of days earlier, then an extension would have been granted.  However in the last hours of the GB is a tad late. ;)

I will move this to the Current Builds area for now.  If still in work later this year, it will be eligible for the "Clear Your Workbench" GB - a GB for you to finish already started builds, including from earlier GBs.

BTW, it is looking great!

Regards,

Greg

The final funnel arrangement and foils look wicked! But what's the function of the Slinky under the hull?  ;D

Thanks for the kind words, fellas-much appreciated.

The final funnel arrangement and foils look wicked! But what's the function of the Slinky under the hull?  ;D

 Pick one:

 (1) Its an emergency avoidance device-the spring is actually under tension

 (2) Its a Phlogiston Accumulator-diverts power from the Aether into the engines.

 (3) Its Lucrezia & Helene's Underwater Underwear Closet

Actually, its a temporary prop-the fins will hold up the weight of the hull ( solid resin, after all ) but
I didn't want to stress them overmuch before I got the stand modified. Did that and cut the covers
for the gunports over the weekend. Pictures probably in the weekend ahead.

And finished...Aunt Sekrit was always partial to scarlet...and the SPS secured a staggerin' quantity of hull red in a raid on
 Norfolk in 1877.

In the immortal words of Gypsy Dick Wrench, "look at de prow on dat steamer..."
The typical procedure was to run the ME a full speed into the side of the target vessel-the ram punching into the hull some ways
above the waterline, and allowing the Pirate ship to hang there, stern supported by the furiously staining Aerodinghy...

...until time for departure, when the forward gunport would open and the recoil and blast from the nine-inch armstrong would
 dislodge the ship.

And what's next in this catalog of infamy? Mwahahahaha.

Zounds and tarnations! You've created quite the terrifying conveyance there, my fine Doctor! Whence shall we expect to see it heave to over our local horizons, I must wonder. Amazement and perplexations abound, yet a great huzzah! must also utter forth from my very own teletypographic attachment board to your illuminated visual portal!
