Title: The Irony Mk I - Finished!
Post by: Antonio Sobral on November 18, 2014, 04:57:56 PM
Hi folks

Welcome to my new recycling project!

This time I gave PC mice a little rest, and turned my attention to something more manly...   ;)

So the works have begun!

This has some influences from the Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K ZBV3000) universe, but with my personal twist.

Eat your heart out, Hasegawa, with you pricey little kits  ;D ;D ;D

But that's just me. :)

Now when I see an iron, will take a second look.

My tongue-in-cheek side suggests giving it wings and calling it "Iron Eagle" after a set of hokey films.

So many ordinary things have cool shapes that could be made into something else. Trick is to see the potential in an ordinary object. Antonio, you have the knack for it!

I'm guessing hovertank or similar, as per the Ma.K Nutcracker (previously known as the Nutrocker due to a translation error). :)

Now that you mention it, that does have a look of the forward hull of a Romulan cruiser from ST:TNG.

Hi guys

Actually this was a innocent recycling of a broken iron.
No perfectly working irons were harmed in any way in the making of this model :)

As for the inspiration, I confess it was originally the Hasegawa Nutcraker.
But this design has been growing on me, and viewed from some angles I think is actually way cooler
and aesthetically more appealing that the original.
Call me a fool, but that's my opinion ;)

This is how it currently looks:

I engraved some pannels to add more texture diversity. I this hard working with this ABS plastic, I can assure you!!

Since the whole design is not yet finished, significant alterations still may happen. Almost for sure... :)

Thanks for looking!

Cheers

Antonio

Hi

Yes, the whole project is 1/48, I forgot to mention.

The figure in particular is an old Tamiya Swordfish pilot.

Thanks for watching!

Hi guys

Thanks for the interest in the pilot's seat "auto-elevatory" proprietary technology.  ;)

Even though being classified material by the DoD, I will risk a sneak-peek to show you how it works:

When the model is finished, 95% of all this will not be able to be seen, but it will be there nonetheless! :)

Hi guys

Thanks for the comments.

With the "interiors"pretty much done, it was time to take care of the exterior, building up the different sections
with bits and pieces retrieved from the old faithful spare box:

Regarding the rotating antenna in the middle section, I am having second thoughts about it, so I suspect that very soon
it will be replaced by ... something that I still have to "invent".

Thanks for watching!

Cheers

Fire extinguisher could be nice :)

It's in the style of Ma.K, Norbert.

In Ma.K the Earth-based Mercenary forces have highly effective Virtual Reality control systems & clear canopies are a weak point.

For example:

The off-Earth government backed Strahl, on the other hand, do not:

But they have better AI systems for autonomous drones:

Hi guys

Thanks for the comments and for the explanation of the MaK "environment"!

And since I personally love not to have transparencies to fiddle about, it is a win-win situation :)

But in the meanwhile there has been some significant progress.

First, let me to present the other player in this little farce:

Second, and as already expected, the rectangular array antenna was replaced with a turret.
"Death Ray Tower" sounds corny, so please call it what you want :)

And the Irony Mk I is pretty much completed:

And strange as it may seem, it was elected "Product of the Year" by the local consumer association.  Go figure!!! ;)

Next step: the terrain....

Thanks for watching!

Cheers

Great job, Antonio - in german we call such things "großes Kino", which means "an impressive view"!

When I've seen the guy beside the "Irony", sticking this stick into the plug, I've got an irony-cal idea: using such a key for spiral-spring-driven toys instead of the stick...  ;D  ;D  ;D

... or a starter crank.  ;)

Hi guys

Thanks for the comments!

Funny you mention the the starter crank, because that was exactly the original intention of the figure:
a WW2 German soldier trying to start a vehicle, ;D

In this scene, the purpose is slightly different, as you will soon see.

The base is pretty much done.
Standard wood wine case cut to the appropriate dimension, covered with vallejo pumice stone paste,
painted with acrylics and to finish, some Noch static grass:

The Irony Mk I also received a first coat of primer:

And just for fun, the Irony next to a Mak figure I (out of scale, since this one is 1/35 scale) bough the other day for another project.

Next step: Painting.

Thanks for watching!

Hi

Thanks for the interest!

The Mak figure/suit Melusine is 1/35 scale, and the photo was just to add some MaK "atmosphere".

It is actually too big for the scene, since the other figures and the Irony are all 1/48.

But I promise that the Melusine will appear again in the future :)
I bought it as is (already assembled and painted).

Every item like vents, hatches, various fixtures look like they belong and make sense for what they are.  With great servicing equipment to keep it in operating order.
All-in-all looks correct for what it is --- Yet at same time does not make sense as to what Irony MK I is.
Commendable accomplishment in bashing :)

Hi

Thanks for the comments and for watching!

The Irony MkI is roughly the equivalent of the alien tripods in the "War of the Worlds" movie. ;)

And the painting continues...

A rough and random whitewash over the overall green gives that faded and worn look I wanted.

And with some initial chipping applied...

The TD21 markings were hand-painted with a fine brush.

For the more inquisitive, the "TD" stand for "Triple D: Detect, Delete and Destroy" ... or,
if you are a Guy Fieri fan, "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives".  It´s your pick!  ;D ;D ;D

Next stop: weathering with pigments.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers

Thanks for the comments!

And since it is always better late than never, I finally put together some of the History behind this scene, based on the
SF3D Sci-Fi Series and with the support of the Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K ZBV3000) universe, with some of my personal interpretation.

In 2877, the Committee of the Galactic Federation, aware of the disruption caused by the existing criminal activity
among the new land settlements, gives the Sthral Democratic Republic (SDR) the right to restore public order.

The SDR sends some battalions of the military police and the Foreign Legion to help restore peace, which made
effectively and brutality, subduing the various groups of bandits with overwhelming force.

The settlers were happy with the restore order, but their lives are strongly affected by the presence of police forces of SDR.
The strict movement restrictions, the confiscation of all weapons and the extinction of the local militia showed them that
the price they had paid for their safety was freedom itself.

With a growing resentment against the restrictions imposed on their lives, terrorism erupts against the SDR forces around 2880.
The SDR quickly responds with even greater restrictions to the settlers, creating an unstoppable spiral of violence.

In 2882, the colonists join forces, and, with the help of hired paramilitary forces, form a provisional government, and declare
independence from the Galactic Federation. The SDR, having foreseen such a move, install a puppet government and mobilizes
additional military force to suppress the rebellion.

For its part, the Earth's interim  independent government organizes the Independent Mercenary Army (IMA) and immediately
declares war on the occupation forces, attacking facilities, communications and military zones networks, resulting in many SDR
prisoners captured and large stock of military equipment seized.

The battle between the military forces of SDR and the IMA quickly spreads the various continents ...

For the detection of the facilities and infrastructure of the rebels, the forces of SDR lay on the ground the famous Triple-D teams
(Detect, Delete and Destroy) consisting mainly of the Irony MkI, a fearsome advanced vehicle for the detection of enemy infrastructures, mobile or fixed.

Our particular scene takes place in the autumn of 2884, near Nova Sintra, somewhere at the end of a peninsula than once
had been known as Europe.

The crew of an Irony Mk I, belonging to the TD 21 (Triple-D 21), immobilized due to mechanical difficulties, try to put it into operation ...

Thanks for watching!

And now back to the bench...

Thank you Antonio for always making me smile (in the meaning of pleasure) and be amazed while following the built of your irony-force device.
Thank you also for the short background story!

Hi Antonio,

What did you use to create that barrel thing with fan blade attached at the bottom?  Is that fan formerly part of a computer cooling fan or something else?

Hi guys

Thanks for the nice words!

"Barrel Thing" is a somewhat simplistic word to describe such an advanced piece of equipment  ;D ;D ;D
but it was made with 4 components (from bottom to top):
Tripod - Evergreen rods
Dissipating Stabilizer - Small fan from a PC graphics card (you were right!)
Cycling Phase Accumulator - German WW2 barrel
Sensor & Detector - 1/2 German WW2 head-phone

Cheers

Antonio

Hi guys

The end is drawing near!  ;)

After some earth-toned pigments applied liberally all over the place, here is the produced effect:

Some more retouching on the tower details, figures and accessories, and the work is done!

That's awesome! All from a household appliance. I'll be hitting the rummage and garage sales when the weather warms up.
I may have missed it but what did that turret come from? Something German I suspect.

I would say that I give up and am back to knitting…except I am afraid of what you would do with a set of knitting needles.

I love those last couple of shots taken from a low angle - very menacing looking iron ;) Would definately do more than burn holes in your work shirt
I am always amazed at what you can do with ordinary household items.
Can't wait to see what you do next

Marvellous, Antonio, but why did the pilot have goggles and wears a wind-cap when he is covered by a totally closed cockpit?

At a guess, because is likely to operate it at times up and looking out directly (much like a number of pilots strenuously resisted enclosed cockpits - Italian "0 Series" aircraft had canopies on prototypes but open cockpits in production for that reason).

Hi guys

Thanks for the nice words!

After a few days of vacations in a far far away kingdom,  I'm back.

Regarding Norbert's pertinent question, the answer is very plain and simple:
Because is was the only pilot figure I had, and I was too lazy to modify it :) :) :)

See you on my next project and thanks for watching!

If caps and goggles were good enough for Oddball, Moriarty and Gen. Patton, they'll be good enough for Antonio's pilot!  :)
